Heard from a friend of mine who wanted to install a DVD player into his VE SS wagon that the Blaupunkt versions used by Holden are among the worst on the market, according to experts who fit them. The VDO systems (as used by Ford as OEM) are by far the superior product.

Please don't shoot the messenger, it's just info for those considering a LCD DVD player in their Holden.

my old man had a factory roof mount DVD player in his calais-V. one day a dvd of mine would not eject. at all. ever.

the dealer denied a DVD was stuck in there. fuksticks.

anyway i spoke to another dealer about it, they claimed it was a common problem. apparantly some pin would drop down and prevent the disc from ejecting. and theyd had a few there, they knew about the problem.

Chris.

Blaupunkt is made by Bosch so it's not exactly a dodgy brand....

Blaupunkt is a perfectly acceptable brand as aftermarket gear.
Half the problem with OEM gear having bad reputations is that they get fitted in much higher numbers than any aftermarket gear, so there are more units out there to go wrong.

Plus, they have the word "Holden" attached to them...

When I was shopping around for mine the salesman suggested I go for non Holden (Clarion) as it has a 10" screen rather than 7", cost $100 more but briliiant. Mine is a roof top version, not sure if that makes a difference.

That doesnt really matter.. My 350Z had a BOSE system, which is supposedly a good brand. Biggest POS ever, sub woofer was made out of a cardboard like material, amp runing the 10' was no bigger than a cigarette packet!

I pulled the unit out, the back had "Made by Clarion" :spew:

Slightly OT, but why does my VE SS stereo go up to like 45 in volume, yet stalls at about 26? wont go any higher? Im not technically minded, so i apologise if its a stupid question.

The distortion curves will stop the volume going higher than any ditortion the system picks up.

Disconnecting the front center speaker will give you more volume before distortion. And disable the distortion curve then crank it as loud as you like. Adjust the bass and treble to limit distortion.

That's what I'm doing until I get an after market sub, front split & amp package.

When I bought mine I asked for rear DVD.

Imagine my delight after asking for it and then hearing these rumours that they had decided to install the Alpine 10.2" screen. It is awesome. Kids love it and it has typical Alpine build quality

The original equipment audio is usually crap because the suppliers are screwed on price. The aftermarket gear is usually a lot better quality.

Yeah like the Bose gear in WM series Caprice/Grange...

We upgraded the speakers at No Limit Car Audio due to sh1t sound and found the "Bose" speakers had stickers on the back of them...

From memory they read something along the lines of "Bose WM Holden" "Made in Mexico".

Almost fell over from shock. :bawl:no wonder they sounded the way they did.

In all honesty one of the best OEM systems I've ever had in any of my cars is the Blaupunkt Maestro system in the WK. Heaps of parameters, heaps of grunt and reliable, clean sound. Funnily enough, they used a pioneer DVD player in that application.

Now in WM they matched Bose HU :spew:and Blaupunkt DVD.. which isnt a bad DVD player in actual fact.

:)

Biggest POS stock stereo system ive had: 350z
Best stock stereo system (wifes car): 06 Accord Euro Luxury.

The Accords stock stereo system had some serious punch and audio quality was exceptional in stock form...

Sorry to drag up an old thread. But does anyone know how to get these HBD roof mounted DVD players off the roof. I do not want to destroy it getting it off so thought best if I ask here first/

Any ideas??

I'd be interested in this too - all the service manuals I've found so far only seem to relate to G8-ish spec cars, so no info on the roof mounted DVD player ...

hi all this might help.
o.k. are you ready. first of all pull out the centre light section by pulling from one side. disconnect the wiring harness. remove the front and rear covers again by just pulling them down. they are just clipped in. this will reveal the actual unit itself. you will have to drop the hood ling at the rear to actually get the unit out. remove both rear grab handles. pull down the rear of the hoodlining to release it. they come down pretty easily. you will have to reach up inside the roof lining and unbolt the ground wire which will require a 13mm spanner from memory. it is a bit of a contortionist trick but it can be done. disconnect the electrical harness from the dvd unit at the rear. you can,t miss it. the hoodlining should have fallen down now to give you better access to the unit. now for the fun part. the unit is only held in by 4 clips. 2 at the front and 2 at the rear. you have to grab the unit and just pull as hard as you can without destroying anything. i have used a large flat blade screwdriver to lever them out on occassion but REMEMBER you don,t want to damage the roof panel outside. they are not meant to come out easy but they will come out. once out you can either take it out through the side or turn it and take it out through the original opening being careful not to catch on the roof trim. hope this helps you out.

cheers tezza

If you have an older ipod that can play video, you can use one of these cables to hook it into the Aux port: http://www.ramelectronics.net/product.aspx?zpid=846
