Canberra, the CAPITAL OF AUSTRALIA is stuck with REGIONAL BULLSHIT TV!!! Why? Who the **** knows?

Rumour is that when the new Foxtel Satellite goes live it will carry all free to air channels, including One but for an entire city of people to have to PAY for TV services to get a free to air channel is rediculous....

Anyway, I recently wrote some emails so thought I'd share. I will order them from the first sent, to the most recent reply I FINALLY received.

Subject: Freeview: Concerns from the ACT

Good Morning Senator,

I am writing to you because I am quite confused. With the 2009 release of Freeview across Australia ( www.freeview.com.au ) being promoted to provide Australians with 15 digital television stations and significant new content, I had been quite excited. I have been thinking to myself “finally, Australia is starting to move to adopting technology of the 21st century”. Imagine my disappointment when one of the newest, and widely thought to be one of the most popular, digital channels will NOT be broadcast in Canberra. ONE, which is the dedicated sports channel, will not be broadcast in Canberra but will be broadcast in EVERY other state or territory capital and even including remote regional areas such as Mildura! Should it not be possible with such new technology that all Australians can be offered the same options? The digital broadcasting technology used in all areas is the same – I know it is technically possible. However it seems someone has neglected to inform whoever is responsible for the Freeview rollout that Canberra is NOT a regional centre. It is a metropolitan city and the Capital City of Australia.

It puzzles me that the Government can allow the Nation’s Capital to be stunted regarding new technology. Canberra, while not on Australia’s coastline, is in fact a thriving metropolis and not a “regional centre”. It is the Capital City of Australia. Yet much like the lack broadband internet options available to other Capital Cities, Digital Television will not be available to Canberra at the levels of the rest of the country.

I implore you to investigate why Canberra is continually perceived to be an insignificant regional centre not worthy of services received by the likes of Melbourne or Sydney or Adelaide etc. Can the Federal Government please take immediate action regarding Canberra’s apparently stunted technological advancement? Canberra is the seat of Federal Parliament and the Capital City of Australia. Surely it is worthy or more.

I have copied the Shadow Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, as well as appropriate Members of the ACT Legislative Assembly and I look forward to your reply.

Sincerely,

XXXXXXXXXX
Canberra Resident

Good Afternoon Senator,

I am writing a very brief follow up email to ask you if you have had time to review my concerns, as I have not had any form of reply from you or your office.

I understand you are busy however the concerns I have raised affect hundred of thousands of people in Australia.

Further to my initial email, I thought it would be prudent to advise you of a recent example of the frustration that I and many others have experienced. I recently had to withdraw an offer on a property in the new Canberra suburb of Harrison when I was informed that there was no guarantee that I could connect to any broadband internet service in that area. Furthermore, I was also informed that should a broadband internet service be available in Harrison, it would only be at a speed of 1.5Mbps. I find that astounding – especially when speeds of up to 24Mbps are readily available to suburbs that are 30 years old! Like most people, I require a broadband internet service at home hence I had to withdraw the offer on the property in Harrison. Others I know of have been less fortunate and not found out until after moving into their new homes that no decent broadband services are available.

As I stated on the 15th January 2009, I look forward to your reply.

Sincerely,

Hi again,

I note that at 4:30pm today (11th March 2009) my email (below) was deleted without being read. May I enquire as to why it wasn’t read?

My understanding is that politicians are elected by the people to represent the people. How can the people be represented when they are ignored?

Sincerely,

No response via email from then on, but received a letter dated the next day: 12th March. Too bad it’s just a wank wank response. I’ll follow it up in another month.

Ditto during the live F1 broadcast from Bahrain. It's great to be able to watch the race live, but cutting to an ad break at a crucial time - with the ad break including a "One HD Sports Update" was a bit frustrating. Such self promotion / sports headlines ads are crazy during a live race broadcast.

Enjoyed the ANDRA drag show a little more on ONE than previously - just feels a little more polished.

CSP,

1. Good on you for having a punt and

2. The good news is that during last night's F1 broadcast on SC10 they put a banner across the bottom of the screen stating they were proud to announce that OneHD was "coming soon" to SC10! No specific detail but I haven't bothered to check the SC10 web-site nor give them a bell.

Cheers, TB

By only having the SD feed on SC10 in Canberra we missed out on the post race interviws of the MotoGP. It used to be included as part of the normal coverage. Seems like one10 is being pushed as the sport channel, at least if you can get it. I have a HD tuner plasma and twin HD hard disk recorder sitting here waitng for some decent HD feeds.

one hd is not that great if they keep delaying ipl games and hoping we will watch them till 4am. :vpo: not to mention their countless ads that starts even before the over is bowled.

Not to mention MotoGP, Nascar, Soccer, Golf, Tennis, Cricket and all the other sports. Woohoo..

Yeah Fox is good but can look a bit crap on the 50" HD, and paying for all the other channels I would never watch I decided against it. Having said that, next year if the Soccer World Cup and Winter Olympics arent broadcast on FTA I will be signing up.

Only 7 days till German F1.
