View Full Version : Mercedes 6.2L engine a marvel

The new iteration of the MB 6.2L engine for the SLS looks brilliant. From the latest Wheels, the thing has 420Kw, 650Nm and does this naturally aspirated all the while meeting emissions and noise limitations. Now that is a bit of engineering we can all appreciate!
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3452/3396270091_9f093b9419.jpg
It also makes 545Nm at 2500rpm! Without turbos!

I bet if they piss the twin Maff's off it will make 450 kw !!! JK :yup:
It's a nice bit of gear MB makes pretty good motors

Yeah that is a pretty amazing reult for a N/A 6.2l given the HSV 6.2L puts out approx 320kw/550nm.
Anyone know what the weight of the Merc engine is compared to the HSV engine ?
What about the cost (crate engine) of the Merc vs HSV ?

How dare you sir! I thought the sound of a blue-printed old 253 with headers and zorst was pretty good. Mind you, the old "traumatic" gearbox makes my current 4sp seem a modern miracle...

Not everyone who buys expensive cars can afford them, just look at all the prestige cars being returned to dealers with their owners having lost a packet in the financial crisis - all leased vehicles (nothing wrong with leasing in theory).
Many people spend too much on cars compared to their means but can still 'afford' them. I could lease a 911 turbo but not the best use of my money! But otherwise I suspect a combination of hard work and being in the right job/industry at the right time. I think good old fashioned luck is often overlooked in some successful people. I wanted to write this to avoid the usual "the harder I work, the luckier I get" comments etc. which are true...to a point. Lots of hard workers out there who get nowhere. Got to be smart, see opportunities and have a little luck. I'm 'lucky' as I managed to get into a decent profession with probably the best job security you can get but I won't earn the really massive dollars but I'm happy with that. Did take a bit of work to get there though...

Makes sense to me John, I'd love to have a W427 but only if I could have it sitting in the garage doing bugger all kms for the next 20 years. As I'm already doing that with the Coupe 4 it just doesn't make sense.
For a daily driver it's down to the M3 or the C63 for me, my hearts with the M3, always has been ... but my god that C63 is tempting. I'll wait and see what BMW does with the TTV8, but my next car won't be a V8 Holden, that's for sure. We'll always have an HSV for the family truckster, but these things are just on another level.

Still all a bit of hear say at this point. The new gen M3 with the V8 is a great car and has stepped ahead in a lot of ways but has also been bashed by purists as ruining the car with the V8. A few of the guys in the Beemer club up here dont have much positive to say BUT really their only gripe is engine choice.
IMO I'd prefer to see another 6 in it, the noise of them is awesome. But the M5 went from a 6cyl to a V8 and now a V10 so I suppose progression of the M3 was from the S14 (best sounding 4cyl ever) to a 6cyl and now to a V8.
Time will tell

Latest Wheels mag has a report on the upcoming X5M and X6M soft-roaders and in that article the gist of what they said was that BMW had "hinted that this TT 4.4V8 will make it's way into the next M5 but the M3 is likely to revert to a 6 " (suggestion being a Turbo 6)

For those that own them, consider changing out the 0w-40 Mobil 1 that comes as 6.2L AMG factory fill, it simply doesnt have enough film strength for these engines. Evidence the clatterly valve train operation, odd big puff of smoke on start up (they all do it intermittently) and oil useage over the first 5000km. We advise 10w-60 as a great Aussie weather alternative

I actually think that's it's biggest downfall ... it looks too much like a pov-pack C-Class, IMO the M3 shits all over it in terms of looks.
Everything else is damn near perfect, I just wish it looked a little more aggressive ... it doesn't look bad by a long shot, but IMO it could have looked better.
Interesting Nick.
I reckon the M3 looks more like a standard 3-Series than the C63 looks like a standard C-class.
I actually think the C63 does a good job of being an agressive looking tough sounding performance car without being "obnoxious" to look at.
But how boring would it be if we all thought the same thing?
I think both the Bimmer and the Merc nicer than the Audi though! :)

Tone,
There are plenty of parts available for the C63, specifically Stateside, where 'tune only' there are plenty of cars in the 11 second zone, which is quite an achievement :)
While the factory exhaust doesnt look much (particularly the headers) it is a quality 'Sebring' aftermarket system from the factory that flows pretty well, and like most modern exhaust systems, there is very little gain other than exhaust note to be had from fitting a larger bore fancy looking piece.
Understanding the management system, and tuning it properly is the key to getting the best from a C63, since AMG deliberately 'held back' the C to keep its power figures off the larger E and S series 6.2 outputs. Its possible to quickly and easily take the stock power to 380kw crank, tune only :)
As an example we tuned a Victorian C63 a fortnight ago. Stock power (dynoned in Melb on a DD) was 271rwkw, tuned it pulled 312rwkw. Thats a big gain in anyones language, and the best part is its really noticeable, seat of the pants

They probably live in a caravan park. :jester:
Not to mention those who are lucky enough to have mum and dad buy then whatever car they like, and then there are those who inherit money..
ROFL i doubt anyones oldies here buy them a C AMG unless their name is Packer or Murdoch hahaha... actually it probably happens more than i think, considering i can think of at least 3 or 4 mates whose oldies have given them $200k+ towards houses etc with no repayment agreement!
Congrats on your purchases guys. Im looking at a company car and I see leases for C63s starting around the $2200 mark. Not too bad I guess...
EDIT - Thats for a 60months lease, so perhaps not such a good deal?
$2200 a month is pretty steep IMO, thats about $400 more than my minimum mortgage payment and $300 less than what i do actually pay on the house... but then again im on average wages so it would be all right for a lot of people here
Yeah, Thanks Nick
In my circumstances, it came down to three cars, The AMG, M3 and the W427. On this occasion, the Benz got the vote as it ticked all boxes....awsome power, prestige, build quality, standard features, resale value and last and but not least, that glorious exhaust note coming out the back of those quad pipes ........Cheers John
what let down the M3 as a candidate? ive always loved the M3's but the C AMG is also friggen horn !!

I will probably get shot down here but when I drove the M3 I was very disappointed. The biggest let down was how the engine delivered the power.
This might seem strange to those who have not driven one. Yes the figures are all there; powerful high reving V8 with fantastic track times etc etc.
But what you dont see is that they are designed more for the track than the street. The engine doesnt deliver the power until you are doing over 4000rpm, and then it takes off. Perfect for the track when your engine is always spinning but on the road its a different story.
I could see myself at a set of lights wanting to change lanes and being blown off for the first 100 m by a tuned ls1 with diff gears. (Not recommending anyone drag on the street ;))
To put it into commodore language its like a stock LS1 even down to the tame exhaust note.
The C63 is a different animal. Given the huge amounts of torque the thing pulls like a train from stand still. I drives like a cammed LS1 with diff gears and a full exhaust :).
Yes the M3 light handle better but given that its lighter with wider rubber, how much of the better handling is in the wider rubber !!!!!

I think Col pretty much summed it up in the above post .
I actually like the looks of the M3 Coupe but I decided I wanted a 4 door car and I think the AMG 4 door looks better than the 4 door M3.
If I was buying a 2 door, I would consider the M3 Coupe or the Nissan GTR. The GTR will obviously out perform the M3 Coupe ,but the BM wins in other areas.
Out of the 4 doors, the AMG did everything with so little effort. It has over 200 NM of more torque than the M3. You really have to rev the M3 to make decent power , where in the AMG, the power is always there. Dont forget the AMG is also detuned ,so with a tune (about380/390fwkw)it will be chalk and cheese .
The M3 might be a better package for the track because it is lighter and more nimble, but on the street it falls behind. It is slower down the QTR, slower to 100ks and has a lot less power and torque.
So in summary, if you are after a high performance 4 door car with all the fruit, the AMG C63 ticked all the boxes.......Cheers John

saying this as ive never driven one, but on the basis, id never ever pay 150-160grand for a commodore with some fruit, we could all go out and do it aftermarket with a better result for cheaper, not that itd have warranty or anything but thats not the point... they didnt try hard enough.

my cousin was one of the first to have one in oz, and it cost him 150 grand on the road, mind you thats cheaper than an audi rs4 a bmw m3 and walky 427! and believe me when i tell you guys that its the best thing on the road...
to give you an idea my clubby has the average perfomance gear like comp cam and springs, 3.9 diff ratio, sureflo 3.5 full ehaust system and on, on, on........and the amg still has about 5 car lenghths on me!
ive driven it heaps and believe me guys its not just that crazy motor, the gearbox is simply amazing! its a 7 speed box with a twin clutch.
Basically when your coming to a full stop or just slowing down it actually gears down automatically gear by gear, and you hear it just like a manual!!
you might get a chance to see it on the road its plates are 6T3AMG.

You will find its a '7G-Tronic' auto in the C63, not the new MB MCT dual clutch (in SL Class etc). Still a bloody fine transmission and much smoother than any jerky old DCT
As an aside for those that want to know more about their Benz we (Willall) have the latest generation 2010 Factory level Diagnostic system for AMG/Mercedes, and also on-site PCM mapping, including live logging and calibration. In other words we can stamp the books and tune the engine properly

Lovely, now make sure you keep the exhaust tips clean, as if you dont the additives in our local fuel will start eating into the bottom sections of them....and being an AMG/Sebring part they are expensive! Next step tune..........

On other topic, they should shove the engine from this into the M3. Maybe they will? 550hp.

Yes, it still has a torque converter doesn't it?
Martin_D
05-04-2009, 04:21 PM
Yes, has a converter.....and in QLD you would be able to organise a 6K stally for it to make it a nice daily
Having said that and in all seriousness, there are upgraded hi-stalls for the C63 around
With a tune they normally run 11.8 - 11.9, with tyres and a stall you would expect that a 10 might be on the cards....maybe

And they sound TOUGH.

You fellows that have a C63 must in heaven when you kick them into life.
A month ago I seriously started toying with the idea of buying an M3. To put the car into perspective I also arranged a test drive of a C63. After a 3 week wait for one to be available, I had the test drive 2 days ago. Yesterday I walked back into the MB dealer and signed on the dotted line for one in Palladium Silver with an August delivery date. The M3 is definitely a great car but I couldn’t go past the valve for money the Mercedes offers, loaded with all the luxury you’ll ever need and the sound of that 6.2 litre is the full horn. It’s a shame no manual is available, still August can’t come quick enough.

ok, I looked at the thread title, and went yeah yeah a merc - they can go, but they just look so soccer mum to me ( with a few exceptions )
after a 100 posts - I had look in to see what all the fuss about - went to end of thread, and saw the pics ......
yeah, I want one - thats prolly the toughest merc I ever seen - asides from the one they were going to rally with the cosworth engine in it ( but cancelled when audi came out with quattro ) - can't remember its designation - but this merc - I seriously thinking in about 4 -5 years, when warranty out, and depreciation has kicked in - I might be able to get one for a reasonable price .....

Oh so very true my swine infected mate ,we ended up using the 10w 40w in these benzs, they sound super quiet and oil usage ? what oil usage :)
