Hey ppl,

I have a question for you. I have a ve ss ute. Cammed ect ect. Anyway i am off to NZ for work later in the year. I will be home every 6 weeks. But was wondering what i should do with my ute. Any ideas would be great. I don't want to sell it, just want to know how to keep it in storage without killing it

You dont have a shed??

If so Id buy a decent ute cover and leave it in the shed, getting someone you trust and is honest to give it a run once a fortnight...

Im doing the same while no license for 3 months, keeping it clean and keeping the oil through it, Dad just drives it to work once a fortnight..

3 years is a long time to be driven once every 6 weeks probly better to sell and buy another after the 3 years or buy the new model lol

If you will be back every 6 weeks and nobody else to trust with it, I would be inclined to disconnect battery while your away - can you get anyone to at least start it up for you, say every 2nd week? If not I would just disconnect battery, or maybe a very low current trickle charger. I find my battery is OK if left for 2 weeks, but need to charge it before I can drive it after 3 weeks (VX Clubby). If you've got a garage/ shed for it - i would be inclined to use old bedsheets as covers - a lot of car covers seem to sweat underneath and if left on for a long time I think will probably cause some paint damage.

yeah i do have somebody who can start it whenever. I would sell it, but i bought it when they first came out and would loose too much money. And also good reason to get that supercharger put on

After one stuff up with a car I stored I learnt a few things....

Disconnect the battery, get your mate to come around the day before starting it and put it on a trickle charge.

Jack it up off the ground. If it isnt driven, the dead weight of the car will turn your tyres into squares. Also make sure if you do this, support it at six points evenly. Rear, middle and front.

Seals and gaskets...this is the fun thing. If you dont start it, you will be replacing seals when you finally do start it. A/C is the worst for this problem.

Make sure if your mate is starting it, get it up to temp.

When you finally come back, dump all your fluids and replace. Remove your plugs and crank the motor a few times to get your oil pressure up.

The bed sheets is exactly right as well. The cotton allows the car to breathe. And leave a window open slightly, but make sure the sheet covers the window to help prevent creepy crawlies from getting into the car.

Wow, thats some awesome advice.. :goodjob:.. Gotta agree with the tyres turning to squares, was O/S for 2 months, came back and the car felt weird to drive, steering had a fair bit of play, road noise was high...

Leave it with a tank full of fuel to avoid condensation building up and water entering the fuel system.

Fuel goes off around the 2 month mark yes? so you will need to syphon the tank. (correct me if i am wrong :))
