View Full Version : Electronic Noise When Driving My Ute??

Hi Guys/Gals,

I have a question as to whether this is normal or not.

Ive had my ute since the very beginning of this year and the noise SEEMS to be getting a little louder and more noticeable

What happens is its fine for the first gear as i'm revving it out then every gear after that it gets worse.

The noise is like an electronic humming noise that gets louder as i put the pedal down in the higher gears.

If i'm on low revs in say fifth gear and push the accelerator down its becomes REALLY prominent.

My friend noticed it the other day on a drive and said it sounds really electronic and can be easily heard from the car he was driving next to me. Even over my exhaust.

I haven't had any loss in power or any problems but if there is something wrong i wanna get it fixed before it does do damage lol.

Not sure what is it but if anyone could shed some light on perhaps what it could be then that will be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,
Elliott

The noise you are hearing feedback from your alternator through your car speakers , you either have bad earth or your alternater is on its way out , but its more likly to be earth related

It is possible that one of your phases in the alternator is damaged.
The alternator will whine and have a lower output than normal.
(one of the diodes could be faulty)
It could be an alternator bearing that is warn out or even the stator
is polling with the rotor. ie the rotor is hitting the stator.

It is free and easy to get an auto electrician to check it out for you.

I had the same problem in my Sportswagon.
You wouldnt believe it, but when i had the Underdrive pulleys fitted, the noise went away!
I also noted that prior to the U/D pulleys the alternator was charging at like 14.5V, which seems mighty high. Now its down to around 12.5V.
After listening to the video though, mine was never quite that loud! Thats ridiculous.

yeah mate its quite annoying.. wasn't like that when i bought it.. just gotten louder and louder... ill check my battery soon to see if i still got enough charge in it to see if the alternator is being affected or not.

mmm so you had the same noise? kinda electronic aye? weird noise

if it was supercharged i wouldn't mind hahahaha

you could ask a dealer ? :)

"that is the standard characteristic of the holden commodore"

they'd still be saying that if the thing was wrapped around a tree.

hahahaha very true!

is it quite possible it could be the diff??

as it seems to be coming from the rear end of the vehicle... unless its playing on my mind haha

DIFF !!!
Had the same thing in my old VS Manta. Sounded like it was supercharged but drove completely fine.
Ended up getting the new gears and bearings put in.

12.5 V isn't enough - normal battery volts when fully charged is 12.6, you should have around 14 volts when it's being charged, 14.5 if the reading is accurate is probably top end of normal, any more could be a problem. I would be concerned if it's not going over 12.5 Volts. There have been various problems with VE's charging problem in certain conditions, at that level I suspect you will wind up having a flat battery.

Poolkeeper... Yeah man it would be sweet if its supercharged haha. I think some ppl actually think it is haha... Let me know about how it goes at the dealer... I recon its the diff :( lol

Got a quick question

You guys think my diff could just need an oil change?

Or the bearings would AT LEAST be gone??

mate I had a similar noise and it turned out to be my tailshaft donuts. The front one had material (fabric of some sort) hanging out which was hitting the transmission tunnel and once on the move over 40kph was making the noise. It started on a cruise and drove me nuts.

Have a goosey.

serious? did it actually sound like the diff was screwed?

thanks mate

My diff makes this noise, even after bearings and oil. Only does it from 70kms up tho, at low revs
If you take your hard lid off it will be quieter Haha
