Hi all, been ages since I've posted here.

Used to own a VYss ute with the usual PT tune, and exhaust. Anyway I sold this about two years ago and bought a Navara to get up the beach surfing etc.

So its come time soon to upgrade the wife's car...and she's been convinced by me that an Ls1 sedan would be a perfect car for her.

Budget is going to be $15k- $20 max, closer to $15k the better of course.

Now for this sort of $$ im thinking a VY would be the go but have found a few over 100,000kms. How are Ls1s at this km figure? My last ute was bought at 27k and sold at 57k.

One of my previous cars was a 94 ss with 130km that never missed a beat but would like to hear some experiences from those with ls1s.

Cheers!

mine has around 107 thou.. Runs perfect. Hasnt skipped a beat and drives strong..

All depends on how the engine has been treated for the km's travelled

Good Luck mate :)

mine is on about 104,000 now, its fine..

you looking at getting the missus a sedan or wagon?

you could pick her up a berlina sedan/wagon, or even a calais with an LS1.. ive seen a few VZ calais for under or around 20k...

its totally a buyers market.. people will take peanuts for their car if they are desperate to sell..

mines got 180,000. only issues so far, water pump and a rear main seal (good excuse to slot in a high stall). Other then that the thing is still going strong and is great fun to drive.

Ok sounds promising. Would only buy a car with full service history too.

Would take either a wagon or sedan, only pre-req is that it has the ls1

Thanks for the replies

My old mans VX SS series 2 has 200k on the clock. Auto, diff and motor in A1 condition.

Like Palmer said, all depends on what kind of life the car has had.

There are some guys on here with hire cars (VHA/VHB) which have done over 500,000km with no major engine dramas. Mind you, they are regularly serviced and do mostly long trips - very few short trips which are the killers.

My sv8 had 120000 when i got rid of it, and it got driven pretty hard most of the time, it was serviced at the normal intervals, had a tune intake n exhaust aswell. It was at its best when it got to 100,000kms to be dead honest.

Just watch out for the water pumps, theyl usually go around 90 - 130000 :(

I had an SV8 for my first ls1 and I got it with 40thou k's on it. When I sold it it had 120thou k's and was going just as strong as the day I bought it..In fact by the time I got rid of it it was going way harder than when I bought it...the wonders of a tune..:)

Standard WL (with tune) with 93,000kms on it, bought with 13,000kms on it. Probably runs better than it did when I got it. Usual things that age like brakes, suspension are more likley to need attention, depending on service history. My 5 litre VQ went over 350,000kms with no real dramas so expect a bit better this time around.

vy sv8 bought at 120k 18 months ago and is just approching 200k, bit noisy(piston slap or timing chain??) still going strong.

on a side note the plastic bits on the side of the seat broke a week after i bought it, glue them back together dozens of times(get about 10k out of em so goes well with the services):goodjob:

VX SS with 318,000Kms on it, runs perfectly not even a hint of any smoke under full throttle!! Though its done alot of Hwy, and the rpms are barely off idle in 6th ;)

Wow, I've only done 82,000 on my VY Berlina. Engine has never had a problem, and has gotten better with age.

I service it every six months, which equals about every 4000 km, though. I put 31k on it in the first year.

I'm hoping to get another 4-5 years out of it at the current rate of use. (Then it will be worth about 20 cents!)

i have a vz ss my engine had 118ks on it before i put a LS3 in there , and it had no problems at all.. ex hwy patrol car also so it wsnt babied at all , i found it drove better (more loose) than my brothers ls1 that has 50ks on it!

150 odd k's on my VX now. I have thrashed the ass off it for 100k's and it still pull same rwkw figures on the dyno. It is a little rattly but, I have turned the engine past 7k on the odd occasion. Aslong as it is looked after will good oil etc I wouldnt think it would be an issue.

97K and does not miss a beat... and zero oil burning.
Radiator done at 90K... will keep an eye on the water pump.

Maybe a silly question... but does an LS1 require a timing chain done at 100K?

crewman cross 8, goes in for the 180k service next week, never missed a beat, mafless and otr since 150K. goes strong, tows the tonner around the country, gets drivin everyday, its never missed a beat.

my wl is @ 107K now. it like a brandnew car, no problem with it at all!

mums vy calais is 150K had a dodgy streering rack and pump. but engine wise its been great.

i think if they are looked after, and regually serviced they will last forever. i know its not a ls1 but our 80 series we bought new in 1997, ran on lpg for 99.8 % of its life, its about 3 weeks away from 400,000 and nothing has ever gone worng with it! it cops a floggin and it still goes like the day we got it!

I've got 160000k's on my LS1. It cops a raping regularly spinning up to 6800rpm and has never missed a beat. 100000k's is nothing for these engines. Infact if I was buying used I wouldn't buy one under 80000k's. You can be pretty sure after about that many k's that its not going to turn into an oil drinking slapper.

just got back today and found some prick has ran into my ute... bloody towbar right into rear number plate. No number or nothing!! fuming.

Oh well - gives me an excuse to buy an infill panel now I guess. Just lucky all the damage can be hidden with a new rear number plate or infill panel.

PRICKS - HOPE YOU DIE IN FLAMING CAR WRECK!!!!

WH 1 Stato 12.52............214,000Ks unopened .

I've got a VXSS sedan with 225,000km's on it, a mate at work also has one but with 70,000km's on it. Can't tell the difference between the two. Mine doesn't drink oil or have any oil leaks either, the level on the dip stick doesn't move between services.

I agree with what everyone else has said, 100,000km is nothing on these engines/vehicles.

Cheers

Nudging 110k's still going strong as ever.

Still on original clutch too !! And thats with having a tune and getting driven hard for most of its life hahaha

Has always been serviced regularly and i change gearbox diff brake and clutch fluid a lot more often than the recommended intervals...

My Monaro has just ticked over 274K kms, owned since new. The only issues with the car have been the usual ones for the LS1 Holdens:

Rear Main Seal/Sump Gasket
Lifters (Excuse to get a Cam)
Power Steering Pump
Diff Pinion Bearing (Excuse to get a 3.91 ratio)

Puts out 254 RWKW

Original clutch lasted to 260K kms

Have no reason not to think it will do 500,000+ kms without any major dramas.

Cheers, Matthew

i have owned my vyss since 79k, 3 years later now on 130thou and still runs like a new car. i have found since i have owned it it actually uses less oil now than it did on its first 2 or 3 services... used to use a litre of oil in the last 1500 km coming up to service time, now i dont need to top it up and its got 1000 to go... might have been the brand of oil... dont let a 100thou+ car scare you off, just find out if its been treated well throughout its life.

edit: i service mine every 8000km too. holden say every 10thou but i think its too much

I bought mine with 80,000 on it, it's now at around 115,000. Just drove it from Townsville to Sydney and back and it didn't miss a beat. Ran perfectly actually and averaged around 9l per 100 kays on the highway. When i filled up the trip computer would say 840 kays till empty.

137000 k's on the R8 and it goes very well and motor is super quiet. I have a decision to make in a few months and that is do I rebuild this and do a H&C or buy a new crate and sell this one for 1k.

I want to cam it but also would like to refresh the things that may fail as a result of a bigger cam and do the pump for insurance. or do I just bang a cam and springs in and see how she goes.

cheers

'03 VY1 SV8 with 157,000km .. original engine replaced at 80,000 for gudgeon pin noise .. so I suppose I'm cheating with the 100K+ ;)

Only original engine had no issue other than noise. This engine's only issue is it's developed an annoying oil smell I can't track down - but isn't using oil. Had the A/C "fixed" after the PS lines rubbed a hole in the A/C lines, but other than that it's basically as-is. One battery, two tie-rods and a few sets of tyres.

It is starting to drive like a "old" car; probably needs a freshen up in steering/suspension, but the body, trim, etc is all pretty tight ..

Good to hear these reports. I have not hesitated to purchase another LS1.

I picked up a VX Clubby with 150k just today and am not worried at all about the odometer figure. I am once again a happy man to have another LS1 in the garage even though it has 80k more than my first one had on the clock when I sold it.

Keep it serviced well and not just the engine, but drive train, suspension etc and don't forget the fluids. Cosmetics are not that hard to keep in good order also. Do it all well and it will keep well.

You should have a good car that lasts for many years with plenty of enjoyment to be had and will look after you if you look after it.
So if you buy a car off someone who fussed over their car in the right ways, you should have no major worries.

Check the history of a car and don't hesitate to ask questions. You can often tell a fussy owner to one who has the 'care factor'. You can go buy one with 25k on the clock and it can be a dog if not looked after correctly or one with 100+ that has been well looked after.

I know what I rather buy.

As most people have said here, there have been little to no issues with 100k+ LS1's, and those that had piston slap / oil issues, generally have been rectified well before traveling this far down the road.

Yes there are lemons out there in all car manufacturers, but usually there are good warning signs of that with just a little looking and checking.

It's not all bad and most of these LS1's come in to their own light at 100K+ :)

i just finished a 10300k trip over 3 weeks it now has 94000 on it. it never used 1 drop of water or 1 drop of oil never even skipped a beat & that was with some high cruising speeds on the nullabor, like clockwork
