Smoke from back of engine?

Hey all
Didn't know where to put this so if it's in the wrong spot mods please move it.

I did a search and got no results but recently my vx ls1 has started to smoke from the back of the engine. It only comes from one side and seems to be around where the trans dipstick is (that general area not from the dipstick itself). It's not a massive amount of smoke but it's constant. It's a white smoke also. It looks as if it's coming up from underneath or from the back of the engine as far as I can see.

It does leak some oil and whether it's leaking onto the extractors and burning causing the smoke is an option. It's not overheating, it's not using any oil from trans and engine is only leaking about a 5-10cent piece puddle over a couple of nights. I'm unsure what it is. I will be taking it to a workshop after easter weekend as I'm guessing most will be closed.

Just wanted to know if anybody has had this problem or has any ideas what is it? Haven't seen or heard of this before. Car is basically stock with 158,000kms.

start with tappet cover gaskets, may be weeping over that area on to exhaust.

I have seen one high mileage engine do the same thing. Turned out the breather hose had perished and cracked and the smoke was engine breathing. It was also at the LH rear of engine.

if its white smoke it indicates coolant or water.

Make sure it's not coming out the small breather off the transmission. The trans must breath. If its blocked, it could be building up internal pressure causing it to leak out over your headers.

Thanks for the replies guys. Chev where abouts is the small breather off the transmission? It's only started it recently. I'll try and post up a video tomorrow to show. I'm a bit worried whether I should drive it or not. Are there any more suggestions?

I need my power steering pump changed (it's whining off its head) and extractors changed over when I buy them so while they are off I'll get everything checked hopefully next week.
