Hey guys, im looking into trading or selling my car and have been to the dealer to get a trade in price on my VX Berlina against a Subaru Forester.

Basically they offered $7800 for my Berlina.
The Berlina is a 2000 VX 1
105000km , Auto, 19 inch wheels,
Oztrack Mafless Tune
Sureflow twin 2 1/2 catback
Two hole modded wih GTS intake pipe.
Fairly new tyres and Wholesale suspension 4 point camber kit, and slightly lowered
Rego expires next month.

What you's reckon ? Good deal? Bad deal? Anyone want it lol?

Cheers,
Daniel

Depends on what your paying for the Subaru!

25k for a 2006 my07 with 20000km. Ive checked carsales etc. and that seems a good price for year model and km's.

Exactly!! The ONLY thing that matters at the end of the day is how much you are out of pocket getting into the new car! Making someone feel good about their much beloved car by giving them inflated top dollar for it is one of the oldest tricks in the book!!

never ever going to be a good deal relative to a private sale and cash negotiation on new car, fact is the dealer or wholesaler has to make money and it comes from your pocket. to find out what you are really being offered for your car shop around for the best cash deal on the forester first, then you can compare changeover prices

Manual or auto? Which luxury level? Be aware also that in the current economic climate what dealers are asking for on places like Carsales is often way above what buyers end up actually paying, so don't be misled by asking prices.

There look to be plenty advertised on there so go and have a look at others and get the salesman to give you a trade-in price and therefore work out a changeover price. Doesn't matter if it isn't really the colour you want or there is some other reason you wouldn't actually buy it as all you are doing is getting a decent feel for the market out there to determine if the market says you are getting a good deal or not.

You'll sometimes be surprised at the deals you'll be offered when you walk away!

I spent months looking at vx wagons and think you could get a better
deal from private sale, you just need to be patient.
Advertise the wheels on it and a general description about other improvements
especially if you have a good record of work you have had or did on it.
(just means it is not written off by some one as "hotted up" while looking at the add)

The dealer will sell it for four grand more and also make money on the scubydoo to.
just an opinion.

have a look at redbook.com.au its a pretty good bench mark to start with on both vehicles

Also try the following sites for valuations, remember your car will
still be going at 300,000km and is only a third of the way there.

http://www.carsales.com.au/car-valuations/
http://carsguide.news.com.au/site/tools-and-advice/car-values/
http://www.drive.com.au/buy/market%5Fvalue/

I found that the redbook was far lower than the market.

What model is it?
Is $25k the changeover or the selling price?

You would be better of selling the VX private and negotiate a lower price.

Ring around dealers and ask for the price of the Subaru without a trade in, you will be surprised how much you might save.

Thanks guy. I've done the deal. I got $9000 for the VX and paid $25000 for the Forester. Maybe i paid a couple grand over for the Forester but for a MY07 X auto model with only 17000km im pretty happy.
So it looks like no more holdens for me.
Cheers

Not sure if the Forester price is good or bad, but I think you did OK on the Berlina, as Wonky said the price you got for the Berlina may have been a bit of smoke and miirrors on the Forester, but at the end of the day you paid $16K changeover from a 2000 Berlina into an 06 Forrester - about $2.5K per year which is probably reasonable. As for no more Holdens you never know you might miss that V8 power and another Holden might be back in the garage.
