Just wondering if anyone has been for a lap round a track as a passenger in a V8 supercar? What was your experience like?

As the company I work for sponsor the Dodo racing team, a few of us are lucky enough to be heading up to Winton on May 5th to be a passenger in one of these beasts.

Jono (TUF304) and I head up to Winton straight after work on Monday, then come back to work after the ride, should have plenty of photos. I can't wait, it will be insane :)

Mate of mine has a day early next month down at Calder Park in a V8 Supercar. Was a bonus from his boss (lucky bastard). Would be good fun I imagine. These are not your normal Supercars but one you drive under instruction of a driver.

I did 8 laps in what they call a "V8 Super car" last month at Easter Creek. I Can't remember the name of the company but we booked through GODO.com.au

My Cousin and I paid around $450 each to drive 6 laps under instruction and then get driven round for 2 laps.

It was a great experience and i enjoyed it but their were some negatives.

1. The cars are not V8 Super Cars. The suspension, tyres, Chasis and brakes are very close to a super car but your lacking about 200HP. They have around 450HP. I thought it would be faster than it is.

2. 6 Laps is nowhere near enough for the money. you only get 4 goes down the main straight and the speedo isn't even right so you don't know how fast you're going.

3. They only let you use 3rd & 4th gear so your not spending time looking for gears and breaking gear boxes. This means you're not getting everything you can out of the car.

4. They charge you another $120 to purchase a DVD of your drive which does not mention anything about lap times or speed. It is just video footage.

I know i probably sound like i'm having a whinge but these are the things i wish someone told me before i folked out the money and had my expectations really high.

I know they can't fix things like the speed of the car but how bout for $500 giving us between 10-15 laps and some lap times??? That would of made the experience that much more enjoyable!!

There's my 2 cents worth.:driving:

I'm a friend of the PR manager for a racing team that owns a couple of cars in the fujitsu class and 2 utes. I've been offered a hot lap in the ute and I can't wait!

Does anyone know th power difference between the supercars and the ute's?

Just remeber anything you get a ride in is not actually a V8 Supercar cos Supercars don't have passenger seats!

Whole different ball game.

The V8 ute series aren't far from a standard ute. Had a good chat to some guys at the Clipsal 500. The holdens are using a stock L98, including stock intake etc. The only things they can change are suspension, brakes, exhaust and obviously the interior. The intake is just a ss inductions growler pod hooked up to the original baffled intake. They make ~275rwkw.

The V8s however are nothing like the model they take their body from. As you probably know they are a purpose built race car and as such are a hell of a lot quicker than the utes. V8 supercars make around 465rwkw and are a lot lighter so theres a fair difference.

Mind you the utes are a lot of fun!!

I thought they had provisions for fitting a passenger seat in?

I know when you sign up to become a HRT member if you choose the top option you get two hot laps with them. What car would HRT be using if its not one of their V8s?

There's a company getting around here advertising hotlaps in a "V8 super car"

More like a "V8 car"

Its a VE SS with better suspension, roll cage, supercar interior and stock motor with cam and tune.

I want a real one to drive

i would think since it is organised by a company that sponsors a REAL v8 supercar that it might be in a real one.

This is an event that is being put on by Kelly Racing, so I assume these will be the actual cars.

From the Kelly Racing website..

Dont know where you get your info from? I have been in a Stone Brothers Car (prior to them building a ride car) with Dave Besnard and an ex 888 car both around qld raceway with Dean Canto. Awesome, smoother than you think power wise, but the braking and turn in is amazing.

I have been a passenger for about about 10 laps now of QR in a fujitsu car. The thing that blows me away is the noises the cars make eg: the clunks and bangs of the drive train, and the way they brake and handle. Very impressive.

The acceleration is also impressive but not as much as taking a 10 sec car off the line at the drags.

Yep, been in the K2 ride in Perth, went with Rick, shit hot fun -took me straight back to my kart racing days, plenty of grip, power, and brakes and minimal body roll, was only 3 laps but it was free so i wasnt complaining!
Got the signed certifcate and a K2 hat.
Take a video camera and get a mate to tape it!
You'll love it
cheers

I went in the HRT PR2 car at Oran Park with Todd Kelly. My wife bought it for me for my 30th birthday. I loved it, the amount of speed they can hold through a corner was more impressive than the power to me.

465rwkw??? Would they be that high?

465rwkw??? Would they be that high?

Nope. 465kw is around 620hp which is what they make at the flywheel, not the rear wheels.

Not a V8 supercar but I won hot laps with Greg Crick in his GTP?? Viper around Symons Plains. I'm not a tall guy - 5'10" - but had to bend double to get in the thing. Freakin scary too.

Doing 265kmh down the straight and on the limit around the corners soon cured me of any racing ambitions.

We only did 5 or 6 laps but I felt crook as after it from the fumes in the car. Cricky's daughter said that after each race he gets pretty crook with the flu or something like it.

I did a SBR day when Ingall was driving #9 and had a 5 lap stint in their 3 seater. It's actually more powerful than the actual V8 supercars due to the extra weight.

I must say it was very impressive under brakes. They arrive so deep under brakes I was sure we would end up in the sand trap on turn 3 at QR.

I did another day with some Japs from Pioneer when they where sponsoring Greg Murphy's car. No offence to Murph but he doesn't have the same charisma as a lot of other drivers.

The real highlight of my track experience was as a passenger of a GT3 around Nurburg Ring and later at Strasburg (spell?) Ring in Austria. You can youtube some footage from the Ring to give you an idea. The driver was actually a test driver from their local GP in Germany. The concentration from those guys is amazing. How those guys do consistant laps around such a large track amazes me. Just when you think you are agood driver these guys show you what driving is really all about.

I have some pics and a Video of a ride my Brother won for 2 people with HRT in there PR 2 Ride ,brocky and Todd Kelly where the drivers for the day .

It was powered by a 350 chev approx 680 hp ,that came from the engine builder himself if i can remember my photo bucket login i will post the link can't post the video clip as it is a VCR Cassette ,maybe i should work on that one aswell.

Was good fun ,awsome brakes and how they turn at such a speed is amazing and the noise from the driveline shit it sounded like it was going to give up at anytime ,i would love to do it again 2 laps not enough but i was free.

270k along the front straight of Calder is a blast.

I agree with you mate, I did the same thing at Calder and reckon it was a waste of cash. Im paying $160 for a track day up at winton at the end of may. Much more value for money. (unless you stack your car).

The HRT / K2 or what ever its called now is actually a proper Supercar Chassis with a older spec Supercar Engine in it. Done Hotlap around Phillip Island in it a couple of years ago (pity it was pissing rain) which I won from a competition from the HRT web site. Even in the wet it was amazing how quick it was and how good it turned in.

Correct from what we were told by Brocky when we were there it was the car Lowndes rolled at calder ,it just sat around for a while until they figured out what to do with it.

okay, so I just got home from my day at Winton and my lap in a V8 supercar, and I must say it was INSANE..

Usually Kelly Racing have specific cars they use for this, but as they had a race meet at Winton on the weekend, they bolted in passenger seats for the rides.

The speed of these things through the corners was amazing! As was the braking. You really know when they step on the anchors, your face feels like its 2 feet forward of your skull! The accelleration was okay, but yeah... the braking and corner speed was the best..

Would I actually pay $600 to sit as a passenger for 2 laps? Probably not, but if offered to go for free again I definately would!

Couple of pics from my iPhone..
