In my experience dealers don't all use the same oil, so the only way to be sure is to ask them if it isn't listed on the service docket.

They use better engine oil now??? Does that mean they were using crap engine oil before.
Its probably best to supply your own 10 litres of oil and that way you have in it what you want and at least you can be maybe 90% certain that the oil you want in it goes in it, as long as they dont do a swifty swap and put cheap stuff in it and keep yours.

Every oil has gone up in the last 6 months.
Dealers almost always use a semi-synthetic oil now as their "standard" oil, as this is required to do the long service intervals for most models.

What 'Wonky' said is right, I have a few friends with LS1's etc, and go to different dealers, in the Eastern suburbs of Melb, to give you an idea
what the following dealers use:
Patterson Cheney use Valvoline.
Penfold use Valvoline.
Doncaster Holden use Shell Helix.
FTG Holden use Mobil.
Barloworld Holden use Mobil.
Heritage Holden use Mobil.
The Ultratune chain use Valvoline.

Maybe they have put yours onto a synthetic oil, Mobil 1 for instance, that would explain the price increase and being thinner maybe the noise as well.

I have been using Patterson Cheney for years and they use Valvoline 10w40
Semi Synthetic SM rated. From what I can see looking in the rocker covers the motor appears to be nice and clean.

vessm,

Depending on which holden dealer you take your car to in Canberra will depend on the oil used.

Commonwealth Motors use Castrol oils, while Gerald Slaven use Mobil oils.

Gerald Slaven are now using / recomending Mobil 1 5w30 engine oil for all VE holden V8 engines as per the manufacturing specs. They do however have a semi-synthetic Mobil oil in the 5w30 range which is a little cheaper than Mobil 1 but dearer than the previous 10w30 used.

Commonwealth Motors use / recomend Castrol Edge 5w30 for the same application above. However, they are still using Castrol Magnatec Porfessional

I would also say that there might have been a price increase in the product by the manufacture. (only speculating though).

Cheers
Phil

Who said you HAVE to go to holden to get the services done or you will void your warranty.
Thats garbage, you can take your car to any authorised mechanic for the services and still retain your warranty.
Who told you this??

To quote vessm...
"When i last took my ve ss to get a service at holden which im only doing because of the warranty but it has mods now so they wont fix shit i know."
I think you might be jumping the gun with your ichy trigger finger on this one. Many make assumptions that warranty is only valid if dealer serviced, and as has been often said, some situations will be more favourably for a "loyal" customer, but his quote doesn't remotely say it has to go there, only that he's doing it "because of the warranty".
It could be either of the situations explained above. :)
