Just make sure the dodgy brothers use a tyre that is specified for your vehicle in regards to load rating.
You really want to use a 245/30r20.
Dont let them talk you into a 225/35r20. You will have more rim than tyre

rather than make a new thread i thought i'd join in here.... RSK those wheels will look great on your car, good choice... now help me!
i am looking for some wheels (20's) that will make you go wow when you look at my car. im not into bling chrome and i prefer black with a lip or satin silver.
my car is a hothouse green VYSS.

i really like these rims in satin silver:
http://www.mswt.com.au/content/products/TI+%20003.jpg

but they are 6 weeks away from being available in holden stud pattern. so if anyone can convince me that another set are just as good by then i might consider it.

vxSSsilver: What springs are you running? I'm thinking i want mine a little lower than yours. Your guards rolled?

Fergo: What car do you have? I like the ones you're looking at. 6 weeks is nothing! Aha. I've been looking since early February to find rims i like.

The front cant go any lower, theyre lovels VS V6 springs

Rear are lovells HRL 66 SL. Can always go BMW springs to get that lower, will tuck rim then, im only tucking tyre.

But you will break drive shafts and your diff. After i broke my 2nd set of drive shafts i decided to raise it, yet my diff still need attention

Guards are rolled and the rear bumper cut and there is no scrubbing. Last set of 20s i had rubbed bad but there is alot of clearance this time.

Make sure you get 245/30 tyres!

They look ok, but would be a bitch to clean. I reckon you would spend as much time cleaning them as you would your whole car.

Tyres will either be 2253520 Kumho ku31 or Nankang or 2453020.

Anyone have any photos of what these will look like on a VY/VZ?

No photos but the 225s on 20" rims on a VY/VZ will look f*cking ridiculous based on those that I've seen.

If having the edge of the rim sitting 10-15mm further out than the tyre sidewall floats your boat ... then go for it.

From memory (depending on the offset) you'll need to run 225s on the front to try and avoid rubbing on the strut.

Sorry mate (only my opinion) but 20" rims are just too big on VT-VZ Commodores. :spew:

a mate has 20" on his BA XR6T. Now from 17" 235 to 20" 225s the thing handles like rubbish (wasnt too bad to begin with) and is really bad on rough roads. A smaller wheel and dropped lower will look just as good

as for wheel choice its your call

a bit hard to see but the 225/35 i had on my old 20s rubbed every where, could of also been the off set and yes the rim sticks out further than the tyre and looks silly

Do you recommend 245s then? S

225s on 8 inch rims looks silly if not stupid and less over all grip too. The lower the profile rubber the worse it looks. You see ricers with these 10 icnh rims and tyres that are so streached on to fit they look outright rediculous.

Stick with 19s then you can run 245 rubber as they are stock on holdens this size. If you have it too low then that is a different story. Stick with 19 as they work, they retain the same grip levels and really not a huge different in looks in the sceme of things.
I know 20s sounds better. The other option is stick with the 245 tyres and 20s and modify things like guards, better offsets wheels so it works for you. All very possible but would need a bit of work and thinking

If 225s rub EVERYWHERE as already said ... what do you think is going to happen with wider 245 tyres?

vxSSilver
29-04-2009, 09:43 PM
i have 245s now and it doesnt rub at all, yet the 225s did.

does have to do with the offset

also the 245s being a smaller profile (30 not 35) means there is more clearance from your strut too.

245s are also load rated.

and trying to get any decent power down thru 225s will also be a mission.

so, yes, 245/30/20s

thanks.

i just bought some verde madonnas from tech9tyres today for my vy calais, they look sick runnin 245 rubber and i think they just gave the gaurds a bit of a roll. i haven't had anyone else in the car but it handles pretty much the same

Wider tyres don't rub?

Well there you go ... I'd have thought that even with the lower profile, 245/30/20 or 30% of 245mm width V's 225/35/20 or 35% of 225mm width would've made the 245s almost the same if not slightly taller?

Did you just change the tyres on the same rims or rims as well?

Not taking the piss it just doesn't make sense in my mind.

Cars currently got 20"s with 225/35/20,

New rims will be 20"s with 245/30/20, free guard rolling when you purchase 20's from Tech9Tyres (aka-tempe tyres), its apart of there deal with the 20's

Gettin them fitted next tue/wed will be sick....

RSK-- New rims are a much better choice not to mention easier to clean hahah, def go the 245's, i had the same discussion with the dude at the tyre shop, namely about clearence issues, he showed me the tyres on a VY SS with 20's, 245's, and has SSL all round, standard struts (no coil overs) so you'll be sweet :goodjob:

I ended up with 20"s from Tempe that aren't even mentioned in here. Ha. I got them for $2,200 with Nankang 245/30/20. Currently legal in NSW as they are load rated and within 15mm of the rolling diameter of the factory tyres. AAMI has no problem insuring them. Will post photos when i can.
