Will sslows and slows king springs be fine to go in my ve ss ute?

ive seen some ppl do it but then other says you need the shorter shocks or they will fall out? or get coilovers which i would love but at $2500 fitted id rather not.

I had King SSLs in my SSV sedan for 12 months before anybody released short body shocks for VE. Never had a problem, though due to my disabilities I never push the car on bumps or corners. When I did fit the Monroes I found the handling on bad roads improved markedly.

It's also much more cost effective to put the short body shocks in up front assuming you pay someone to put them in for you. The Monroes for VE ute are around $350 - $400 and labour plus wheel alignment when I had the Monroes fitted was over $200, so you're paying over half the cost of the Monroes just to get them fitted later. :(

They wont fall out on the VE.. and yes they will work, however 'S'lows will hardly drop the car by much if thats the effect your after..

Yeah, sorry, didn't see the reference to SLs in the original post. My understanding is that SLs are a waste of time and money on a VE SS as they are only designed to bring a non FE2 car down to FE2 level i.e. where you're already at.

Due to different shocks in the rear of the VE ute it would seem you almost need SSSLs in the ute to achieve the same look SSLs give in sedan. My ute with SSSLs all round is about the same height as my SSV sedan was with SSLs.

This is my VE with Front KHFL 150 SSSL (Ultrlow for V8), Rear KHFL 152 SSL (Superlow), give you an idea what they look like. This car has 18" rims

The coils will not fall out with the height you're chasing.

If you do not choose the extra expense of fitting shortened shocks, you can ride on just the springs however the King Springs will give you the best ride. The tapered-wire variable rate technology is light-years ahead of any other coil spring design to suit the VE range, this alone without even mentioning the other features is a reason to choose them.

Fitting shortened shocks is highly recommended with lowering, unfortunately the VE's have a limited suspension travel and do bottom out on the standard FE2 shocks if pushed into a corner or driven over poor roads. The VE Monroe short shocks are a great way to improve the ride, the valving has been designed and drawn by King Springs, designed to work specifically with King Springs variable-rate coils.

Luke

Wonky,

Don't mean to hijack this thread, but am in the same predicament as VESSM. Only difference is, is that I have 152SL (rear) & 150SSL in the front. My first journey away to Toowoomba had my ute bottoming out on a road hump in front of a motel as were driving away. I was upset that the car scraped underneath (where the exhausts join the manifold/headers near the front). I contacted King Springs (Kris Tarrant) and he was very helpful, but surprised that my car bottomed out in the first instance with the SL's in the front. Anyway, he recommended that I fit Monroe GT Sports 35-0579 (rear) & 15-0592's on the front. Whaddya think? I note that you don't 'hustle' around corners etc, due to a disability. I too, am in the same predicament as you, having lost my right hand in an accident with my job. My ute is only used for long distance trips (incl interstate).

Cheers,

Hubcap,

I'm surprised you scraped in a ute with only SLs in the front and SSLs in the rear. What sort of extractors? I've got 1 7/8" Pacey long 4-1s (3" collector), Sureflo Ballistic cats and 3" KPM system (that tucks up very nicely! :yup:) and have not scraped yet, even with SSSL springs all round. Mind you I always angle speed humps.

In fact today we visited my brother-in-law who lives in an area with lots of speed humps and didn't even scrape where my SSV sedan with only SSLs all round would occasionally scrape.

Sorry, I don't know the Monroe part numbers for VE ute to know if those are what I have though do know that the rears on ute are different to rears on sedan (fronts the same).

Cheers,
Gary

Hi Gary,

Thanks for your reply. We've just had a long weekend in Qld (Labour Day) so the missus and I tripped around the south east in the ute and actually stayed at the motel where I had the scraping problem in the first place. Took your advice and 'angle drove' the hump with no problem. Even asked the wife to jump out to maximise ride height. That part didn't go too well as she thought I was suggesting she was fat!!

My ute has had an initial Walkinshaw upgrade and it is tidy underneath, so it comes down to technique when attacking speed bumps as you suggested. Have identified the Monroes I require and trying to work out whether I should go for the Walky supercharger or go CAPA. Walkinshaw is considerably more expensive. Any suggestions?

Ute goes into the local dealer tomorrow as the 'battery saver standby mode' illuminates, at the start of each day. I've seen the thread about flat batteries and bought a calcium battery charger today. Up to now I've been using the Projecta 1600ma trickle charger. The ute is my gettaway machine with my beloved VT taking me to work each day.

Regards

Phil
