A mate of mine is looking for a car at the moment (LS1 of course :)), a few of us have been helping him look for cars, and i stumbled across this one (http://www.carsales.com.au/all-cars/private/details.aspx?R=7070496&YearFromShort=1647&__Qpb=true&Cr=1&__Ns=pCar_Price_Decimal|1||pCar_RankSort_Int32|1|| pCar_Make_String|0||pCar_Model_String|0&__N=1216%201247%201282%201252%201246%204294965857% 204294967204%20903%20246%20%201647&silo=1011&seot=0&__Nne=15&trecs=11&__sid=11E2044D13DC) yesterday.

His budget is between 20k-22k

This car has all the mods that he will eventually want to do to a car, but he has decided to pass it up due to a couple of reasons, those being:

Initial cost
Not suited as a daily
Not a Calais
Been thrashed
Just wanna get in and drive which I cant do with this car

He has passed this car up with out looking at it or test driving. Which leads me to question, how do you know its been thrashed, or not suited to being a daily?

My thought process is spend the extra say $3-4k now, rather than spending $15k over a period of time thus saving you $11-12k.

What I would like to know is what everyone's thoughts are on buying something like this as well as pros and cons?

I'm not too sure I understand his reasoning. I'm not a fan of the TK - way too big for my liking - but, it would be a very decent package judging by where the work was done.

I think as far as daily driving would go, I'm sure that a stalled auto such as this one could be easily driven daily, however, other considerations come into play.

It would be very loud and perhaps, simply amount to cop bait.

It would also be very, very thirsty.

Lastly, if he has his heart set on a Calais, then a Berlina may not be for him. I don't believe there is a huge difference between the two, apart from aesthetics and leather trim anyway.

cheers

24k for an ls1 berlina, tell him his dreaming

for that price you could get a vy hsv, or a vz ls2

I'm guessing you missed the list of mods to it?

The money thats been spent on it that seems a reasonable price may get it cheaper if he in with a cash offer. The exhaust system alone is 4 g is your mate wana do cam, exhaust ect if so id say that car is at least worth a test drive.

looks like a very tidy car with much attention and money spent on it. it deserves an inspection and drive before dismissing it totally in my opinion. If your mate bought a stock standard car and spent 15k on all the fruit would he be a little upset if he tried to sell it and someone dismissed it as being thrashed and not practical if they hadn't even seen it up close.

I wouldnt think that car has been thrashed, he obviously looks after it. His modifications and supporting bits are all there. IE no half ass mods..

To me its a, I got everything car to impress the ladies lol

His main concern was the cam and stall being too much as a daily and needing to change it to something a little less "wild"

If I were to be interested in purchasing this, I would be calling Phonsy to ask him about the car if he remembers it etc...

Only way to find out if its the TK is too big is to take it for a test drive however if his hearts not set on it doubt he will change his mind,

That's way too expensive IMO... I paid $22k for my 05 VZ Calais (not ls1 but still..) in 2007

i wonder if this car is from here? (the forum)

maybe dissapointed it didn't make 300rwks
spent a fair bit lately to just sell up:confused:

and me personaly, i like it:goodjob:
it would be worth a trip just to give your mate a starting point at what he can get for his hard earned! and maybe 20K cash could be on a winner

If it had a set of heads it would be a pretty impressive car.

i'd buy it, drive it, if i didn't like the TK (which i would) i'd take the cam out, sell it for $500 and get GMM to install something a little smaller and re-tune it...

it's got some serious bits in there, and some mega dollars has been spent...
with a smaller cam it'd be quiet economical for what it is too... and bang out easy mid 11's...

saves him buying a 15k car and spending 15k on it to try and get the same result... someone else has already done the hard work :) sweet!!!

I'd buy it, but not as a daily.

Why spend all that dough just to sell it??

Strobe, you make good points about your mate being short sighted (about cost) but maybe he wants the fun/experience of doing each mod himself and feeling the difference as things get changed.

Each to there own, Ive got a calais myself and would probably prefer a berlina now. I'd buy it (after looking at it first, of course).

What has made you think that you would prefer a Berlina over a Calais? Not all that much difference between the two?

Sounds like your mate has the money for a Calais, and that's what he wants, he should wait until he finds what he wants. The Berlina looks like it's had a lot of money spent on it, and it looks good with the 20" Supersports. At the end of the day it an 03 Berlina (series 1) and $24 K is a lot also considering it has 125,000 Km on it. I would wait for a good Calais that suits him. Should be able to get a good LS1 VY perhaps even a series II for the $20 K budget, depends if he's looking private sale/ dealer or auctions etc. Might even score a VZ at the upper end of his budget.

Dunno, just not as "flashy" i guess.

Originally I bought the calais for my wife (but then I fell in love with the engine, and here we are) and things like leather and chrome trim are not high on my wanted list. Really an executive is what i'd like but I'm not selling my car now after the $$ spent.

Last time i looked on carsales my old black vx2 ss was for sale from the bloke that bought it off me. It has now 85kays on it and by the photo's and description nothing has been changed since i did all the work to it. It has 222/224 cam, psi springs, pacies, twin 2.5", super low kings, 19" HSV VZ R8 rims, 3.9's, pt clutch, hsv brakes (off HSV105's GTO), 277rwkw, all work done by powertorque, stereo etc etc. Had 24grand ono on it which is dear for a vx and is up in qld but it may be worth a look and to talk the bloke down.

I have a VX II Calais as well as the Clubby, one thing that is annoying with the Calais is if I get in after the Mrs has been driving it, I have to put the drivers seat back, it seems to take for ever for those power seats to go back. Anything lower than a Calais you just lift the bar and push back. It's good for minor adjustments while you are driving though.

seems to have all the gear on it, if you wanted to jump in and just drive with out having to to run around find, pay and sort out all your mods then it would be a good buy.

on the other hand, its still only a vy belina, i bought my wl statesman for 20g 6 months ago, so to pay 24 for a vy belina even tho its got a few mods still seems a bit much.

the tk cams do sound good and put out good top end dyno figures, but iv never been in a car with one to judge what they are like on the street. at the end of the day it will still flog a stock camed ls1!

looks good..maybe offer him 19-20k regardless of how much he spent at the end of the day its not worth that much more over a stock one! a vy with 10k spent on it is still a vy.. same goes for every other model.

oh no i saw them, but i would still rather a stock hsv then a modified berlina :)
