View Full Version : Idle Knock
SSDVL!

Hi Fellas,
My partner has a VY SS....The car drives like new, but when idling on a set of lights it has a knocking sound that can be felt through the accelerator and heard coming from the front right hand side of the engine. it can only be heard when inside the car, but cannot hear it outside the car or under the bonnet. Have had the exhaust checked and its all ok. The best way to describe the sound is like something isnt bolted in properly and is knocking under the normal idle of the car. If the knock wasnt present the car idles fine and takes off really good.
Anyone have a similar problem or know what could be the problem?
the car has only done 53k.
Cheers ed

Im currently experiencing a similar problem (I think) in my VY SS.
When in traffic or taking off in first gear, 99% off the time it will send a vibration/rattle type noise through the car, for some reason I think it has something to do with the exhaust, I would love to know what it is..its really annoying and sounds shithouse.
I bought it in Jan and its only being doing it for the last 3-4 weeks..

Pepps - a rattle through the exhaust usually the biscuit in the cats is lose/stuffed
SSDVL - knock type noise.....try the following. Exhaust/headers hitting the body or engine mount is dicky or a front suspension bush is farked (very very common).
As for piston slap - you can hear the motor slapping by putting a long screw driver from the block to your ear.

Good suggestions IMO.

hey clubbie,
its definantly not the exhaust/headers or piston slap....have considered the engine mount and checked them, they are fine. Will check the front suspension bush.
Pepps mine doesnt do it on take off just when idling, but it would be interesting to see what yours comes out be, keep us posted through my thread.

Mate
The front bushes (Link pin and castor from memory) were both replaced by 33k. I now have Nolathane ones....no problems.
The funny part is when you take off slow or fast you will hear it most times. Not nice when the car has low k's.
Cheap fix if it is bushes.
Engine mounts also pretty easy to diagnose......look for free play in the motor in D or 1st gear against the brake.
Edit: Also check for loose bolts like the skid plate, K Frame and engine covers, front guards?, and bumper? etc

Hey.
I have the exact same problem. Done 70K. Under load there is no missing. Engine runs fine. On idle though will run fine for a bit, then the roughness/knocking will start and go away. Checked exhaust, suspension, plugs, leads etc. All good! Very annoying.. Have no clue as to what to look at next.
