Hey guys, can anybody recommend a way of cleaning an air filter without causing any damage? It's actually for my dirt bike filter which picks up a bit of oil and dirt and what not. I've heard of soaking it in petrol and leaving it to dry thoroughly?
Any ideas?
Cheers

if its a K&N or the like make sure you re-oil it afterwards!

$2 degreaser works perfect. Just spray it all over and give it a light rub with your hand then hose off. Do that twice and your filter will be nice and clean.

wash it in petrol or kero and then with warm soapy water. Then give it a rinse with clean water. Let it dry, Do Not Ring it out. Then oil it with an air filter oil. I do mine after every decent ride but i depends on the conditions on how often you really need to do it.

After racing motocross spare air filters are a priority for starters as you don't want to stuff around during a race meet or even a ride in dusty conditions cleaning and oiling a filter so firstly get a spare. As for cleaning you can by your high end you beaut cleaners but we've always washed in petrol, then used warm soapy water with a good detergent such as "Morning Fresh" since that has good grease breaking "surfactants" to break down the petrol residue and wash away during the rinsing. Hang in sun to thoroughly dry and make sure it's dry, no short cuts. Then using a good air filter oil such as Shell or Motul coat the filter with a "thin" film then roll and squeeze it through so the color is consistent throughout and so it's got a tacky feel, definately not dripping. Do that for both and put the spare in a plastic bag and close securely to keep it clean. Run a thin strip of oil around the rubber inner so you get a good seal when you fit it to the bike air intake, and make sure it's correctly fitted and not just the top you can see, this oil helps stop dust and shit falling inside the air chamber when you remove a dirty air filter as it is trapped in the oil.
