WEST Australians will no longer have to bother with scraping off registration stickers from their cars, the WA government says.
In a bid to save $2 million over four years in printing and postage costs, registration stickers and discs for cars, trailers and motorbikes will be phased out from January 1 next year.

Premier Colin Barnett and Transport Minister Simon O'Brian announced the change to overhaul the state's outdated licensing system today.

Mr O'Brian told reporters in Perth, the change would “kiss goodbye the frustrating task of scraping off old rego stickers to put a new one on”.

Police would use new communication radio technology to check registration details electronically.

Mr Barnett said motorists would still have to pay registration fees, but getting rid of the stickers would cut unnecessary red tape.

”People will still be sent an account to pay their registration but they will no longer be required to display registration stickers,” Mr Barnett said.

”That simple measure will save a lot of time and bother for some 2.2 million vehicles and their owners in this state and it will also save around $500,000 a year.”

Well i don't usually have a problem getting mine off !

Seeing that the goverment will be saving money would be nice if they could reduce the price of registration fees a little !

Slimey, just use some clear contact over it. Less hassle than getting a new sticker.

At least with the sticker you have a reminder when it's due - can be a problem not to have it - say if for what ever reason you don't receive the renewal notice, or if you have a company car as a driver, if there is no sticker, I am not likely to notice if it has expired if the company didn't renew it

LoL No sh!t..

Transport Minister Simon O'Brian announced today that drivers in WA will no longer need to Pay Registration cost's on there vehicles.. Mr O'Brian said "The community are sick and tired of paying registration each year and that no longer having to pay it would be a step in the right Direction"

Good news as long as you stay in states where they use number plate recognition software in the police vehicles.
Go somewhere were they don't have it and expect to be pulled over quite a bit by police for registration checks. last thing you want if your car is illegally modified, unwanted attention.

QLD are looking into this aswell. I hate rego stickers that don't suit my cars colour, LOL.

Not as surprising as it seems in many ways.
(In Victoria) years ago they did away with the need for stamped rego stickers, and now with the traffic/divisional cars all fitted with computers, checks can be done while driving behind you, so a sticker on the screen means nothing. You can just stick an unpaid sticker on the screen to make it look like you've paid anyway.

01-01-2010, 10:27 PM
Yes we can legally take them off.. i actually took mine off New Years Eve!! i hate the look of them..

And the other thing i saw at the licensing place in Morley last week that you are able to pay your rego upto 3 months past its due date at the post office, as long as you take your original rego papers they sent out to you... I thought i was only like 2 weeks past you could pay, 3 months is awesome, so will def not pay mine on time next time..

Umm, not so fast. I think you'll find that if you don't pay it on time, you're still unregistered. What they are doing is that your registration won't be CANCELLED until 3 months afterwards, in line with other states, i.e must surrender plates, etc.

You may be able to pay it three months after the expiry without having to go over the pits but it WILL be unlicenced on the 15th day after the expiry...no third party insurance either. That hasn't changed..

I paid my rego a couple of days past the due date, they still sent me out a sticker, but does this mean it is still unregistered?

legally i think you are registered from the moment its paid. if your in a state that uses stickers then you must display that also. im with this idea to scrap the stickers.

rego goes up each year usually due to rising TAC costs. you can usually notice this on the invoice.

You can legally drive it for 15 days after the expiry. After that you need to park it up until its paid.

Yeah, the cops are using it here in tas.

They have online access to the database now, so patrol cars that are online, and they even have an iPhone app that does it. No need for radio checks!

The cops here are having fantastic results with it!

Just remember to take your rego papers with you if heading interstate as the other states don't have access to the WA system and there's been some pollies saying that other police forces haven't even been advised of the changes. Mines half falling off anyway so I'm glad to be rid of them.

In the ACT you don't get the sticker until you have paid for it. We also get to choose our third-party insurer now... They print a list of quotes from approved insurers on your renewal notice, which is really handy... pity there is only one in the list. Hmmm.

I paid my bike rego online (31-12-09) and have received a receipt so they are still mailing something out .
The odd thing is the transaction showed up when i checked my account details online but when i checked the same account a few days later that transaction had disappeared
So i have a receipt to say my bike is licenced and have had cash back in my account for three days now .

I phoned the bank and they said no transaction there call DPI , called DPI and they it's paid .
