Hi Guys
Just thought I would share with you a job I did on My VE HSV Tourer Wagon today.
Last week I had a 2.5" X-Force Cat back added to the car (along with a Dus OTRCAI & a Chev's tune) anyhow all very happy with how that went but the exhaust note inside the car was a little louder that I really wanted (sounds perfect from the outside!) so I thought I would try to reduce the internal noise a little by putting Dynomat Extreme in the spare wheel tub.
For those that dont know the VE spare wheel tub is made of a very heavy plastic and I wondered if it would quieten down the exhaust note inside if I dynomated the whole thing, so today I did.
I took 3 1/2 sheets of dynomate to do the whole job - the wheel tub has lots of channels in it so it not a simple job to do to get all these channels properley covered.
I started by doing these channels and the whole job took about 2 hrs to complete.
So was it worth the efort and cost (Dynomat Extreme isnt cheap)
Well yes it was - it has made the internal exhaust note less and reduced the drone that was previously there... Glad I did it now and can recommend this to anyone wanting to quieten things down a little inside the cars cabin.
I few snaps I took along the way below..

You said you used 3 1/2 sheets , is that 3 and 1/2 sheets of the dynamat size 18"x32" (457mm x 812mm)?
have been wanting to do this for a while and you have now rejuvenated my interest in this.
seen 5 sheets of the above size for $180 delivered
Looks good though. I considered doing this to my wagon as I get a fair bit of drone noise in the cabin. Is there any diff between Dynamat and the Aussie version?

Hi there
I bought a box (9 sheets of 80cm x 46cm) of Dynamat Extreme for $220 from a company that advertises on Ebay, ended up just driving over to their shop in Knox (just of Lewis road) to pick it up and pay for it on the spot..
I will use the left over sheets once new speakers go into the doors.

It's worth the effort to do - see my post above where I got it from - didn't know there was an "Aussie" version?

I thought there was an Australian manufacturer I saw somewhere that makes it for cheaper.. I know there's one calle FatMat that's also US that's an alternative. I was also informed that there's a self-adhesive sound deadening product you can purchase for cheaper from Bunnings. I'd like to find out more details and if it would stack up to products like Dynamat..
I saw the Knox place on ebay.. Knox Auto Carpets or something it's called.. Sounds good though.. My new catback i find is a bit more droany than my old one and at certain rev ranges it's a little annoying.. Nothing turning the stereo up can't fix though haha..

There has been comparison of these products before, somewhere around the car audio forums... search maybe for dynamat and see if you can find some arguments :smilesandbanana:
TBH having experienced most of these products, you well and truly get what you pay for. Flashtac (from Bunnings) is very thin and prone to falling off things when it gets hot whereas polymer-based deadeners like dynamat have much more favourable acoustic qualities and are better to apply, and longer lasting.
Lesson - steer away from bitumen-based sound deadening sheets.

having done this, i feel it is a complete waste of time on a modyfyed car,
as soon as you change exhaust the benefit that it was meant for is gone, and just doing the boot without the total floorpan is a waste,
i doubt now that what i did was any benefit, and infact i all i did was add 100 pounds to the car,
i can say that before i did mods, i had a very quiet Cabin,i used 36 sheets for all car, and if you intend to keep car stock then a worthwhile excersise, but if not spend money on further mods
im sure some will disagree but this is how i have found it,
cheers Paul

Interesting point. I, myself as a wagon owner want the performance sound from the outside with minimal inside drone. It's more noticeable obviously with a wagon than a sedan but I didn't know it weighed that much. So you say the sound dampening effects were not present after you layed the Dynamat down? It's good to see the opinions of those who think it's crap as well.. Helps those who are considering doing it.

I personally didnt do it to get rid of drone etc as my loud exhaust with cam etc is exactly that LOUD...and thats the way i like it.
i didnt get any less drone in the car from it so for me it would be a waste purely for that benifit.
My reason behind it was for the full stereo install and i did the whole car basically and works a dream. stereo up no rattles and clanging like the fully sick dudes out there  and barely hear the music if your outside the car with it turned up and windows up and doors closed
and yes it adds a significant amount of Kg onto the car
i used something like 3bulk packs all together.
my car with me in it @ approx 95kg...the car was not much under 2T :eyes:

Just to add my comments 24hrs after installing the Dynomat in the wheel well of my wagon...
There is no doubt that it has helped reduce (internally) exhaust noise, I had a rather anoyying drone at a certain revs range and this has just about all gone now.
Very glad I went to the effort to do it...

I'm getting my exhaust on tomorrow......so to pre-empt it.....did the whole wheel well and boot today......my fingers are killing me. I used 6 sheets of a extreme bulk pack. will prob get another bulk pack and do all doors and bootlid later (depending on how loud exhaust is)

I bought one of the $220 36 sq ft packs from Knox Auto Carpets intending to line the sides of my tub (not solid under the liner - see below). Reason being with the 3.45 diff in now instead of 2.92 the exhaust noise from outside (not drone) is possibly a little bit much for sensitive ears on a long trip (I love it though!!).
Besides, from what I understand it doesn't hurt the utes to have a bit of extra weight in the rear. Also, I'm upgrading the sound system soon so figure it won't hurt from that point of view to deaden any external noise transmitted through the tub as well as putting it on the doors.
Looking for volunteers to help this Saturday arvo at Chev's. (Gary wonders if now nobody will come to Chev's this Saturday.)
