I've been uploading photos to an on-line photo storage site and I came across these ones from a trip we did to Mt Isa in 2007. The number of tyres on these things is staggering:

They only run that many tyres cause the truck drivers don't change tyres anymore. LOL

Shit most truck drivers wont even hit them with a hammer to check if their up.

86 tyres by my count..

You would hate to have to replace all of them at once!

86 tyres by $500 a tyre = $43000 :)

Yeah and by the time you are past it's almost embarrasing how fast you are going if you hold it open the whole time!! ha ha. Fun though.

Nice pics!!

It is funny how the prime mover will swerve 6 inches, and by the time it gets to the back trailer, it will swerve 6 feet (or more).

The road trains aren't too much bother until you get between cloncurry and Mt Isa where the road gets a bit windy. Before that it's so bloody flat and straight we often wouldn't even de-activate the cruise control to overtake.

Those cattle road trains are pretty scary stuff. They look so top heavy!!!

Although the odd mine truck tends to keep you alert:

They definitely are some scary shit when trying to overtake on a narrowish road! I got stuck behind one at rumjungle, Darwin at xmas time and didnt have the balls or maybe enough sense not to try, but the rear trailers were all over the shop both sides of the road!

43,000 for 86 tyres. is not a bad effort. lol

6 tyres on a 785c and each tyres around $26,000 :D $150,000 lot of money espicially if you have to scrap them when they have heaps of hours left on them due to operators running over rocks :P

That's pretty impressive, but a transport company has out done them. I was there when they broke Marleys' record by pulling a roadtrain that was over 1000m long, weighed in at more than 1000T, 8.5km.

Apparently that record has also been beaten now. The same company pulled a MILE (1600m) of trailers, almost 2km in 38 degree heat.

If i can find the link i had i'll post it up.

Cool pics of the Mining trucks.

I was told by a friend who has driven road trains, that they do not look in their mirrors as it puts them off seeing the back trailer swaying all over the place. He said your initial reaction is to hit the brakes which would only make the swaying worse.

How those guys can reverse those things is beyond belief

you want to see the amount of main signs and traffic lights these big trucks just drive over in town. you got no chance if you stepped out in front of them with a full load, can be over 100 tonnes when there pulling a big load of ore and cattle, how much does a car weigh? 2 tonne?
