View Full Version : Anyone not like the VE shape?

I realize I'm probably among the minority of people here who don't like the shape because a lot of peoples rides on here are VE's. However, you can still own one and wish you had a different model shape. For me I just really hate it, it's too big and bulky and bland looking. I really can't go past the VY/VZ shape.

Also I'm new, so hi! :smilesandbanana:

I think most people now don't really like the VT-VZ shape, but hey that's just me, there are a lot of those cars on here too.

The VE is soooooo much better in so many ways than the previous models, the looks are part of a wholy better package.

Welcome to the forum.

Only 2 things I don't like about the VE

Number 1 ... the headlights and grille are cartoon-ish big.

Number 2 ... I don't own one.

VE HSV's look awesome when done right (lowered, wheels - white clubby with black GTS wheels ) but the rest of them are just hmmmm yer no thanks, just dont do much for me.

VX HSV shape looks the best from outside. Everything just works. Interior a bit dated but meh you can live with that. VE HSV interior looks the goods, so yer VE HSV for the win, what was holden thinking with the stock interior, even giving it to the SS, hmmmm.

Couldnt go past the VY ute just couldnt get my head around the VE ute after time and seeing a few modded they grew on me til the point I actually liked the VE more than the VY. The last thing I had to get my head around was the rear lights on the VE ute but I got red so they blend a little better.

The VE looks pretty good, I do like them. But the 3rd gens (VT - VZ) are still my favorite

In Utes, The VU - VZ wins hands down. They make the best looking SS model. The VE utility looks to big and high sided to me.

Only VE Ute Ive really liked the look of, is Wonkys SSV ute.

Good thread this one.

I dont mind it as it has grown on me. I thought the flared guards looked way too big and they are heavier. Overall a way better car but the shape I am not a huge fan off. Even the HSV done really do that much for me. I like the SS look better and the SS utes would be my favorite.

Still I can not seem to go past the good old VX GTS for some reason. Wonder why.

I think the VE with body kit look good the Omega Calais etc look ugly, I drive a VZ and i think the best looking shape was VX (perfect if had Vy/VZ interior). VE HSV do look the shiz.

The other thing people need to remember is that this shape needs to still look modern after approx 6 years, as this is the expected lifespan of the VE shape.
Anything that looks perfect now is likely to age quickly toward 6 years. Many didn't like the VT shape initially, but over time it seriously dated the previous model. It will happen with VE (if it hasn't already :hide:), as the long wheel base/short front overhang look already seriously dates the VT-VZ, even if the reat of the look hasn't grown on some...

I love them!! I had a VY SV8 and two VZ SSs (all bought carefully by choice with my own money) and far preferred the look of my SSV! Utes have never done it for me before but when I saw the VE ute I just had to have one!! Sold the SSV sedan and now have SSV ute. Loving it!!

Only VE Ute Ive really liked the look of, is Wonkys SSV ute.

I loved my VY SS still love the shape.. more so over the VZ's.. but after going the VE SSV.. man it just feels too old back in the VY lol.. im not set on the other ve models eg calais,omega... as i think the SS kit makes the cars pumped guards.. the VE also drives alot smoother and hugs the road better.. I would some up the VY SS as a more rigid car for throwing around.. for an all round cruising package I can't go past the VE especially the SSV.

P.S. I Don't mind the VE Caprice ;)

The VE shape I hated at first, but over time has grown on me, but still, Bog stoch are crap, Unless its a HSV or done up with BIG wheels as the VE has such a big wheel arch, they just look funny... standard VE the wheels just look toooo small for the body.

The VX HSV's do it for me :D

As for the VE ute, cant go past the MALOO tail gate :D the ass end of them look hot :)

Ha, I agree with all those who love the VX HSV, for regular Holden models I would go with VY II or VZ Calais. VE utes look good. VE Calais V looks good, like the look of Boyleys Black one (even though black isn't normally for me), with the small G8? type spoiler. Also like the VY, VZ Senators in black too.

the VE shape has grown on me over time but mainly the HSV models and Statesman base. Something about the base commodore shape is a bit off putting to me, not a huge fan on the flares or bulky bumpers, would take a VZ any day.
The VE is a fantastic car to drive though, as you would hope being the latest and greatest model.

Although
I am a bit sick of the VT-VX interior cluster in my WH, VY-VZ dashs are my fave followed by VE than the old VT-VX dash.

Here is the old VY SS v VE R8

http://www.oz8.org/gallery/albums/Carl/DSC01306.sized.jpg

I need to get some pic's of the SSV, its not quite as nice as the R8 (in looks or drive quality), but still dates the VT chassis easily IMO.

had VT V6, VX HSV R8II with premium brakes, etc and now a VE SSV
still have a soft spot for the VTII GTS 300kw and the HSV VX but the VE wins hands down for the best one of the lot.

the pumped gaurds, the equal weight balance on all four wheels, the interior, no more boot arms into boot area, etc, etc
just works and is the way forwards.
the handling, comfort, ride and driving experience of the VE kicks ass over the VT-VZ shape but still  over some of the awesome examples of pre VE

i drive missus VX Calais S/C v6, mates cammed VYSV8, etc but just dont feel as good

When the VT came out, I hated it badly.. I thought I'll never get used to that shape over my old VR... I did.. Now I have a VX.. I see the VE and think I think i'll skip on that shape.. That shape I feel will stick around for a while (If not forever If they decide to can the Commodore).... So I think it's jsut something you get used to..

it took a while for me to warm to the ve as well. but this i will say , to anybody here that hasnt driven a ve, take 1 for a drive and im pretty sure as do others here as well that your mind will be made up. they are just a much better car to drive. they handle, steer, brake much better. have a rear end set up that absolutely shits all over any set up before it.dont get me wrong i like my vt/z's as well and allways will. im on my 4th ute and the ve is everything i hoped it would be, its not perfect but what is these days?. to finally have room behind the seats is a real godsend i can tell you. im a big fella (tall and big)and i have no trouble getting in and out of my ute compared to earlier models where i sort of just fell into the seat and contorted my self to get out again. mods i have found to be no dearer than earlier models. and you dont have to spend a small fortune on suspension mods especially on the back end to get them to handle even better.
PS. no disrespect meant to those who dont like them, im just adding my 20c worth.

Always thought the VE was a bit big looking, don't mind the HSVs as much though. For mine the Coupe 4s, Y HSVs and VZ coupes were the pick in looks. However after being in, around and under a few VEs I'd probably go one over the earlier ones mainly because I like the interior better, and that's where you spend most of your time.

I think the VE sedans have the potential to look pretty decent. As stockers they don't do a lot for me but with a bit a bit of work they can come together nicely, for example I think EXCESSV and Darkrayne's both look unreal.

As for the utes they aren't within a country mile of looking anywhere near as good as the the third gen utes IMO. To me they look so big and bulky, especially in the rear and don't get close to matching the aesthetics of the far better proportioned VY/Z's.

Each to there own but at the end of the day if I won lotto I'd still opt for a third gen as I think they're better looking and more equally proportioned cars.

I don't understand how you don't like the VE??

I personelly reckon the only Holden that beats the current ford competition in looks is the VE. And I hate fords!! :spew: There are a few exceptions, mostly clubby's.

If Holden didn't come out with the VE I wouldn't be driving a Holden.

I owned a VX Berlina (which I still have), VY SS ute, VZ Clubsport and now a VE R8. I love them all especially the VE. I think that the VT-VZ has aged really well (so has the VR-VS for that matter but not a fan of VN-VP though) but I think that my VE just looks brilliant now and so much newer IMO.

Funny thread this, everybody seems to be praising the overall look of the VY-VZ now but I still remember even on this forum when the VY first came out, a lot of people hated it because of the rear light treatment. I loved it at first and really love it now, especially when you follow even a lower spec one at night. Looks clean and sharp and the flatter boot line has even taken some of the jelly bean shape out of it.

The VY tail lights have aged well and kind of makes the BA's safe tail light design look boring now.

I do like the VE shape, however I thing the front guards need to be toned down a bit.(I know it would not be economical to do but the huge front guards should be exclusive to HSV).

After 3 years the VE definetly is overdue for a face lift.(similar to VT-VX or VY-VZ)

More modern looking front lights and front bar would be good also.

The interior needs an update as well.

the only thing that makes the ve look bad i reckon is the rear taillights postition, the sportwagon is the best looking wagon ever!

I would suggest to those who haven't yet.. go and test drive an SSV.. The leather.. the handling.. the better go over your LS1.. definitely more torque down low and up top than your LS1..

After driving one.. or your friends... ;).. re post and let us know if you're thoughts have changed at all.. Obviously not all are gonna be good but I know for me I couldn't stop smiling after taking my first on a test drive :D. The SSV has the same headlights as the hsv's so look great imho.

But as Curtis above has said.. all comes down to personal preference...

HQ is the biggest selling Holden of all time, followed by the VT. I think the VE will end up a fair way down the list unless they keep it going for another year or two, as the monthly sales rate on the VE (usually 3-4000 cars) is well behind the 6-7000 cars a month the VT did a lot of the time.

Anyway, on the original question, my personal opinion is that Holden got it right with the VE for its time and got it right with the VT-X for its time. I think the VE is going to start to date fairly soon though as newer designs out of Europe etc are moving back towards soft edges with more curves, and the VE is very much hard edges and straight lines.

The "angled front and rear ends on a curved middle" approach of the VY-VZ was the worst of both worlds IMHO.

I've driven plenty of VE's and the old fellas got an l98 equipped WM (which he's extremely happy with), and the L98 is certainly worlds in front of the LS1, no debate there.
I think most people who are championing the VY/Z's are doing so based on aesthetics rather than the drive line.

VE in stock form (Omega) is one butt ugly looking car. The big arches make the wheels look like space saver spares. Any car modded can become better looking no doubt.

In HSV form however a tough looking car, especially the tail lights.

I still prefer the WK-WL shape to the WM, it looks like a bigger car with a big boot, whereas the WM is a much more flowing design. Think of how the HQ Statesman looks compared to a HQ Kingy, the extended boot makes the car look so much bigger (which is the market's preference for the LWB cars, I guess; plus the WK has more legroom out back than the WM).

Gotta work out a way of getting a WM motor into the ol' WK tho.

The standard Omega with skinny tyres sitting up high looks unbalanced to me, particularly from the front where the wide shoulders seem to look over the top. Probably because there is nothing underneeth to support it. On the other hand, I love the look of the VE Calais with the optional 20's. Overall though, I think it looks great and makes the old model look slightly dated now. If they put an interior in it more like the latest Euro Insignia and built it better I would buy one.

Since Holden didn't bring out a VE Monaro I guess I'll just have to be content with my VZ Monaro. :) IMO any Holden coupe (V2, GTO or VZ) looks better proportioned than the sedans and the VE looks too big and bulky. There's a reason that most supercars are small and light! Having said all that however I wouldn't mind an LS2 (or LS3 or LS7) in the Monaro but the 5.7 VZ weighs 100kgs lighter than the 6.0 VE so I guess performance wise they're almost equal (VE Monaro 260kw vs VESS 270kws). A RHD Camaro would have beaten everything:bawl:

Party Pete
25-05-2009, 08:40 PM
Whenever you see a VE side by side with a VT-VZ you can see the physical bulk of the new car. They really are a much bigger car, too big IMO, but clearly Holden felt that was the right thing to do. How much sharper would the VE be to drive if it had been a similar size and weight to the VT? Still looks good though.

The SV6 and SS looks great both in sedan and wagon form

Yes I bought my Calais in August/September 2 9/12 years ago.

I'd like to see some styling changes, a 6.2 litre, better command centre, good sat nav, digital radio, bluetooth that hooks consistently, plastic bits that don't fall off, split rear fold ... I really would like a rear fold.

Having personally owned just about one of every platform over the years, VL, VS, VZ and having driven VE's I'll quite happily say that the VY-VZ were the best looking. The VE's are fkn boat anchors (where's macca to say "just like the alloytech motor..." when you need him :) ). They are huge bulky american-SUV looking things. The only model, and this seems to be a common opinion, is that the VE HSV's are the only model that actually looks any good, and I'd agree. Can't say I like the look of my VZ Sv6 anymore, what with the front end missing thanks to a transperth bus running a red light on 14th and cleaning me up. Cheers.

However I'm enjoying the hell out of the GTR for the moment, although I will be back for some Holden love again in a few years.

Getting back to the original question/statement I have to agree I can't like the VE as much as the older VY/VZ shape. Mainly as I prefer a lower bodyline design. Other things that put me off buying a VE when test driving were the sheer size of the car, felt much much bigger. The finish of the plastics. Very Astra looking. Limited upgrades for the stereo system, couldn't put in a nice aftermarket unit as it's wired in to the Climate control. (I believe Wal from Top End Audio is working on a touch screen upgrade for this though) Not easily upgraded to manual if I bought a Calais. Seemed like way too much money given the set backs.

There are things I do like about VE's, but I still prefer the VYII/VZ. The last of the breed (VZ) is always the best, so looking forward to how the VE platform matures though.

I love the look of the VEs. Especially in wagon, and ute guise. Seriously I think the VE ute is the best looking ute Holden have ever created.

In saying that I still like the look of the VL the most out of any Commodore.:)

i agree ^^^^^^

the ute is the best looking one they have made yet! and the SS is a very aggressive looking car each time i see one. still on the fence about the HSV's - think they went a little too black plasticky on the front bar.
but i'll agree that the standard omega doesn't look a patch on the VZ executive.

Same here ... to a point. The VE is certainly the most cohesive overall design since the VX. To an extent, I reckon the VY-VZ shapes were "transitional" - moving from the curves of the VT/VX to the sharper angles of the VE. To do that, Holden basically slapped angles on top of the curves which didn't work for me.

(I still slightly prefer the looks of the VX but I'm biased.)

Awesome thread, bound to get some discussion - since I can't post pics or links yet, how's about some pics to go with the comments?

My very good mate has a VZ Maloo and always had a soft spot for ANY commodore ute....I'd have loved to buy a VZ now the VE has come along and the VZ looks very dated.....

Although I am a little biased, having JUST bought my new VE SSV Ute and being THE nicest thing I've ever owned it is my dream collectors ute in my current budget/lifestyle.

If budget was unlimited I'd still have the ute so it's up there for me as far as being collectable > some will laugh at that and I scoffed at anything new ever really being considered a 'classic' however I am so so so very much in love with my new ride that I can't see being with out it and cleaning the black body is a labour of love ....and I DO love her SO! :D

VE gets my vote in case you can't tell

biased obviously
BUT
the VE is really the most cohesive design. proportions are bang on. i'd been waiting and waiting for it, high expectations but completely satisfied when i saw it. and it's only gotten better in my eyes.
the VT looked good when it arrived but by the VY-Z it looked hashed and incongruent. mix of angles and curves only works from some angles. sometimes i think the Y series looks better but after a close look at a mates Z clubbie i'd lean more towards them as the better of the pair

second to the VE I absolutely love the VT senator signature. such a smooth, cohesive shape. VX's look a bit mangled from the back but front on look sharp.

driving it, vision is poorer but my SS-V feels at least as good as the VZ clubbie to drive with much better steering.
saying otherwise sort of flys in the face of every journo that's tested it and i'm not going to make that claim...

Overall I like the shape, side on looks really nice, not overly keen looking full front on as I think the flared guards look too big from that angle, just my opinion, overall the car is maybe just a tad too big for my likening, I have a VX and a VC and I love the size of the original VB/VC Commodore, such a breeze to drive and park, but I would still buy a VE if I was in the market for a new car. Still a good overall package. Whether I would buy another V8 is another question what with the way the emphasis is going on fuel efficiency, buying a V8 today there is a possibility that you might get burnt financially in another 3 to 5 years come resale.

for what its worth, im not really a fan of the VE shape in general with the exception of the E2 Senators.

To be honest, im a VT fan, closely followed by VZ.

It's interesting that someone has noted the wide front flares. I love the look of the VE without bits added on (aka HSV, especially E2) and with decent wheels and tyres. I reckon that the standard sedan with standard wheels and tyres does make the front wheel arches look slightly over the top. No complaints there though, why wouldn't you design the car to look its best in the more expensive models. I still think it is a great shape.

I prefer the VE shape in the sportwagon, however, no room in the back is the downfall. I prefer the overall package and room in my VY wagon.:)
