Hi Guys,

I lowered my car with Peddars springs on Saturday and I am now getting a strange knocking sound on the back left hand side. It seems to be coming from either the spring or the shock. I didn’t notice the noise at first, it wasn’t till later on that night I took the car out and noticed the noise. It doesn’t seem to happen all the time when going over speed humps but seems to happen when the road is uneven. Like when I back into my garage or go over a slight divot in the road I can here it, sounds like metal on metal.

I had a look underneath the car and springs and shocks all seem tight no loose bolts. Do you think my shock has gone, if so isn’t this a bit too much of a coincidence?

There is no rubbing of the tyre as I have checked that and the car has only dropped 20mm or so, that shouldn’t be an issue.

I will be contacting the guys who put the springs in today but may not get a chance to drop the car back there until the weekend due to work commitments.

So wanted to get feedback from you guys to see if anyone had experienced this issue after lowering or any idea what it is or how to fix it as the noise is extremely annoying.

Besides from noise I am very happy with the ride quality and how the car sits now.

Thanks,

Darkrayne

IS the noise like metal rattling?.. If so I had similar with mine to start.. worked out to be a metal washer inside the left rear suspension assembly thats supposed to hold the top part over the shock.. every bump or what have you i could hear what sounded like metallic dingalinging lol.. took the rear assembly back out again and seated it properly and its never come back.. don't know if its the same thing.. have they put in the rubber/plastic sleeves around the spring coils? can stop the coils banging together when being compressed...

had the same issue when i fitted kings to my car mate. basically the guy just went over everything again and it came good, prbably just the shock or spring not located properly.

ive got something similar, I think mine is the exhaust taping the shock, my mechanic tried to fix it but it still happens over bumpy road, i need to take it to the exhaust shop to get them to bend it a bit

Thanks for all the reply's so far guys.

Darkrayne the sound does sound similiar to what your saying.

I spoke to the guys this morning at peddars who fitted the springs and they said it sometimes happens with the VE's and said it will need some protective covering over the coils as they are probably touching each other sometimes.
They said to bring it and they will do it. The only thing is i thought it would leave marks on the springs if this was happening and when i checked the springs i couldnt see any marks.

Either way it doesnt sound like it is my shocks which is a relief.

Spring wrap is on the cars from factory to stop that.
Heck wonky had similar issue if i remember correctly when he had the King springs put in his sedan back 2years ago

suspension shops should either put the stock spring wrap from ur original springs onto the new springs or put new wrap on ur new springs

no need to stress mate as its the quality pedders service that alot of us have experienced once and never gone back coz of it

good to hear they are onto it now..just a shame wasnt done the first time

Hey EXCESSV,

They did put some wrap around the springs not sure weather it is new or from stock suspension. When i looked under the car to see if i could see any problem i could see a grey coloured wrapping over the first 2-3 coils of the spring at the top and a few of the coils at the botom. So they did this part right. I just hope whatever it is it gets fixed properly without costing me more money for shocks or something else.

Cheers,

We as a group try to do our job to the best we can but sometimes you can't control the human content of our staff as we all have bad days & make mistakes. But we usually learn from this & move on to do a better job. I am sure it will be something quite simple to fix & the guys @ the Pedders store will help to sort it out. If not let us know so as to see what we can do for you.

Just an update on this, i wasnt able to take it down to Peddars to get looked at this weekend due to work commitments. But the strange thing is the noise has now pretty much gone away. I lent the car to my old man over the weekend, he took it away with him probably about 400km round trip, so not sure if this helped the springs settle a bit.
I will still be taking it into Peddars on Saturday but thought it was strange that the noise had pretty much gone.

So took the car to peddars over the weekend unfortunatly they had run out of coil wrap. Got one of the guys from there to go for a drive with me to confirm that it was coil wrap it needed. As always in these situations you cant replicate the issue when you take it to the place to get it sorted. It made a slight noise over one of speed humps but nothing after that, they confirmed it needed coil wrap.
Though the interesting thing is like i mentioned before the noise had just about dissapered, until i washed the car the following day and it was back again making as much noise as it did when i first lowered it a few weeks back. I remembered one of the guys at peddars did mention something about the springs might make more noise when wet but at the time i didnt take much notice of the comment, though thought that was strange.
So back there this saturday to get the coil wrap fitted and hopefully fingers crossed that will fix the issue once and for good.

Hi Guys,

Thought I would let you know this issue has now been resolved. The reason for the delay was me being away and a few other things came up so it took me a while to drop the car back to them.
So I took it back to Peddars on the weekend as they decided to replace the rear spring to see if that fixed the issue. They jacked the car up and found there where a few rocks between the bottom suspension mount and the spring (apparently this can cause some noise and it seems it was an oversight by Holden not to add a rubber seal there). They cleaned the rocks off and added some more coil wrap to the bottom spring.
Went for a test drive with the manager and the noise was still there, he advised me that the noise wasn’t coming from the springs (previously when going for test drives with the manager the noise hadn’t been audible which was how it always seems to be when replicating an issue so I was glad that it was noticeable this time).
So they did a shock test on the car and put it back on the hoist to give the rear a check over. They found that the rear brake caliper was a bit loose and tightened it (but this may have just been because my pads are low). What they also found which seemed to be the culprit was that the Lynch Pin was loose (Think that’s the name of it). The area where the rear sway bar connects to the body of the car was loose on the left hand side and made a noise when moving it, this was tightened.
We went for another test drive and noise has now gone which is great news. Hopefully the lynch pin isn’t screwed and just needed a tighten, guess time will tell.

Thanks has to go to the guys at peddars for there time and patience.
