Protest morphs into pitlane unrest

Saturday 30/05/2009 17:45

Despite CAMS Stewards refusing to hear a protest by five Holden teams yesterday (Friday) over the legality of the TeamVodafone splitter mount, the controversy is far from over.

The general feeling along pitlane is that the emphasis has moved from being an eligibility issue to a question of management competence.

Though most were not willing to talk on the record, many in pitlane believe an alleged lack of leadership shown over the issue by the powers-that-be has become a bigger issue than the eligibility of the splitter mount itself.

CAMS refused to hear the protest from the two Walkinshaw Performance teams – Toll Holden Racing Team and Walkinshaw Racing – Garry Rogers Motorsport (GRM), Brad Jones Racing (BJR) and Rod Nash Racing (RNR) on the grounds that the protest was made outside of the specified timeframe.

The teams protested against the flexible mounts fitted to the two TeamVodafone Triple Eight Falcons during the Saturday race at Winton earlier this month.

Some V8 Supercar team engineers have concerns that the flexible splitter mount provides an unfair aerodynamic advantage by allowing the Triple Eight cars to run their splitters closer to the ground, thereby creating less lift.

Walkinshaw Performance lodged an appeal against the Stewards’ decision not to hear the protest, and while the other teams have chosen not to officially lodge appeals due to the large fees involved, BigPond Sport understands that all of them have thrown their support behind the Walkinshaw Performance appeal.

The appeal is scheduled to be heard on June 10 at CAMS’ head office in Melbourne.

No one from Walkinshaw Performance or RNR was prepared to comment when approached by BigPond Sport, but team owners Kim Jones (BJR) and Garry Rogers (GRM) were more forthcoming.

“Really it is more about the process and the way that things were conducted as a group than probably the significance of the part in question,” Jones said.

“The whole matter has been handled very badly. It should be something that is kept behind closed doors because it is internal business not external business.

“The whole thing has been a mess since Winton. Reading between the lines the Stewards are very cautious in dealing with something that could potentially bite somebody… but at the end of the day somebody has to have the balls to sit in judgement of it.”

Jones indicated that BJR used a similar flexible mounting system on the splitters of their Audis when it raced in the Australian Super Touring Championship, and a few years ago Jones even asked if that system could be used in V8 Supercars.

“When we had the (Falcon) AUs and we were tearing the front bumpers off them every time we went out on the circuit, we asked the then (V8 Supercars) Technical Officer if we could use that system and we were told that it wasn’t within the spirit of the rules,” he said.

Jones is now convinced that such a system should not be allowed under the current V8 Supercar regulations.

“My personal opinion – as in Kim Jones the non-qualified mechanic from Albury – is that if you are mounting something using a half-inch bolt, then you drill a half-inch hole,” he said.

“If you do anything other than that then you are talking piss. Whether it is an advantage or a disadvantage, who cares? But it is not in the spirit of the rules.”

Jones stressed that the flexible splitter mounting system BJR used in Super Touring was a cost-cutting exercise, but refused to rule out if such a system could provide an aerodynamic advantage, simply stating “I am not an aerodynamicist”.

Rogers also believes that flexible splitter mounts are outside of the current V8 Supercar regulations.

“There is absolutely no doubt in any reasonable person’s mind that the part in question doesn’t comply (with the rules). There has been too much ‘to-ing and fro-ing’ and avoiding the real issue,” Rogers said.

“I have requested to have that part inspected by a qualified engineering group that has no connection with motorsport other than their mechanical expertise. So far no one has been prepared to do that. I have been constantly at V8 Supercars to do that and it is very disappointing (that it hasn’t).

“It’s all right for justice to be seen to be done, but justice actually has to be done as well as being seen to be done.”

BigPond Sport understands that there was a meeting scheduled post race today (Saturday) between V8 Supercars Australia executives and franchise owners – who collectively own 75 per cent of V8 Supercars Australia – to try to sort out everyone’s concerns.

congrats to Ingall the fastest guy at the end missed out by inches, bring on the next race.

Don't worry we got used to all this when Ford were whining and protesting for year after year about their crappy AU's.

The championship standings are interesting for Holden even with a disastrous start to the season.

Don't forget a couple of years ago when HRT, and Toll HSV dominated the first few rounds, and Ford were whinning. It goes around in cycles.

Anyway I wouldn't really say Holden have got off to a disastrous start. I mean as it stands there are 3 Holden drivers in the top 5.:)

Things could be alot worse.

Great to see Holden and the factory team get a win, hopefully they can string todays race together as well although qualifing hasn't quite gone to plan for Tander.

When they set the car up correctly, qualifiy and concentrate on their racing the Holden teams are still right up their in the fight for the championship, rather than worring about why the other teams are doing so well.

Go WD!!

Go Rusty!!

Yep as I said we were well and truly used to it from the 3/4 year drought of the AU. I don't believe I ever said a Holden team/driver had never done it.

Your second point, simple really. TWR have the funds so the minor teams are only supporting in principle. Would have worked the same when Ford were bankrolling protests of parity etc and minor ford teams supporting in principle

I missed today's race. Good effort by Davison, but what happened to Tander?

then you had M.A in the BA falcon and the rolls reversed again, isn't it funny how everyone wants to follow TWR but noone wants to take it further, hey look who's in 2nd i wonder why they wanna contest it huh.

Murph hahaha he doesnt say anything when he hits bargs, ambrose, or caruso
Dumb Brell - THE FLAGS ARE BLUE, MOVEOVER - someone needs to go back to v8 school. However it could of been TW strategy securing will 2nd place. That guy will go to any lengths to get his way :vpo:

but what happened to Tander?

I didnt see all of the race but he came in early...after the 1st or 2nd lap for fuel but not long after going back out his rear left tyre started to shred causing him to come back into the pits and enter the field two laps down.

Im not sure what happened to him in qualifying though?

either way it's always the way,No1 team gets the most attention due to the under performing teams, nothings changed really.

Im not sure what happened to him in qualifying though?he still finished pretty good for a guy who was at one stage 2 laps down, that deflating tyre killed his race really.

Race 2 was pretty good, I thought. lots of strategy/ unknowns etc with those new tyres, so I reckon there is a bit of "luck" involved, and it is possible to be caught at the wrong place at the wrong time....but, having said that, I reckon Jamie Whincup drove a pretty much faultless race...obviously on top of his game at the moment.
Cheers, Pickles.

Great result for Davo again yesterday. He's been great so far this year. When are the FPR boys going to get a penalty. The stewards were very quiet yesterday despite them using their cars as battering rams with poor old Murph the main victim. It seems the F*** boys can do what they want and as soon as a Holden driver puts a wheel out of place they get a drive thru.

So the Tripple 8 splitter isn't that much of an advantage then?

I doubt anyone knows the answer except 888, hence the protest to clarify it. It isn't the first protest in V8 Supercar and I doubt it will be the last. Whincup and Lowdnes certainly had good pace without it, but it could be a marginal advantage. It reminds me of the rear wing in F1 a couple of seasons back where it was flexible so down the straights it flattened out giving the best aero for top speed, and then under brakes it stood up, giving the best downforce for cornering, the best of both worlds. Is this what the flexible mount is that everyone is talking about? Just a guess.

Personally I think those kind of engineering 'smarts' should be allowed, but then so should have the superior wheelbase and track of the VE been allowed instead of the chopped version to make it identical to the BF/VZ.

So the Tripple 8 splitter isn't that much of an advantage then?

Basically the easiest way to explain it is that there are kind of rubber bushes in between the bumper and the mounting point on the front of the car, making the whole front splitter/bumper assembly more flexible and able to take a larger force without defecting/breaking around the mounting point.

Interestingly Brad Jones used to run these on his Audi's back in the Super Tourers. When the AU's were spitting front splitters almost every round he asked if this system could be used in v8 supercars, to which the reply from the governing body was that it was against the spirit of the sport.

Its only against the spirit of the sport because someone actually uses some engineering smarts and comes up with an idea that advances the car instead of dragging it back to the pack.In my opinion the racing would be much better and more unpredictable if teams were allowed to use different tyres, brakes, suspension and as Hazza said the VE should be the VE not a modified VZ.

Ah it would better. But all this has been covered before.

It's all standard across the v8 supercar paddock as it complied with Project Blueprint.

Interesting to see Coulthard cruise through the field late - guess the daily settings and strategy info from 888 engineers was worth the cash :)

Plenty of people out there with decent tyres - think ou will find that there is more to it than that. Good luck to them, showing up some big name big $$ teams

I am by no means saying that it was only the tyres, only that they helped. Wilson Security Racing have looked pretty good at several stages through out this year. it is good to see different teams up the front that just the usall suspects

watching dumbrell hold up Coultard like that reminded of Morris dirty tactics,my blood almost boiled,i was hoping Coultard would of just punted him off regardless, but he kept a cool head and came home with the points,so props to them.

Im glad to see a variety of cars performing well at different races etc
i think the sprint tyre has helped and is def a positive for V8SC
get so sick of watching the same people taking the podium round after round.

bring on the 19 - 21 Jun when the V8's go to the SKYCITY Triple Crown Hidden Valley Raceway
