I thought I'd post a little project a mate and I are working on. It's also to thank some people who, without their help, this could not have been possible. Kyle from www.kylesconversions.com.au has done most of the work so far as I am off work with a shoulder injury and can't do shit.

This is what we started with.

http://img34.imageshack.us/my.php?image=10for101.jpg

We're trying to run 10 second 1/4's for a $10,000 outlay. So far:

$400 for the motorless truck
$1200 for the low milage 2005 Ls1
$50 for Th350 to suit rebuild
$50 for diff and tailshaft
$725 for Camaro rear sump setup
$50 for radiator and 3000cfm thermo fans
$40 for water pump
$56 for engine mounts
$24 for rear trans mount
$145 for Bosch 044 fuel pump with alloy bracket
$40 for rails and throttle body
Free injectors
$23 for tray material

$2803 total

The big expenses to come are the auto rebuild, an Ls1/Th350 stall convertor and the converted harness.

Hopefully the finished truck will be under 3000lbs.

Left mount/header done:

Right mount/header done:

Had to drive to Canberra to pick up the motor. He was advertising it for 1800 bucks but got desperate.

After dummying the motor in the bay, we decided to cut a band out of the trans tunnel to get the motor further back. We also had to swap over to a Camaro sump setup for it's rear pan.

Motor and gearbox are now in and mounted. Modified some HSV extractors to fit. These extractors were supplied by Dale from www.castlehillexhaust.com.au at a yet to be decided price.

http://img38.imageshack.us/my.php?im...re24052009.jpg

We spoke to the gingerbeer and he signed off on cutting 10 inches off the chassis to cut the wheelbase from the too long 119 inches (same as a one tonner) to a more managable 109 inches.

http://img151.imageshack.us/i/shortened32.jpg/

Decided to go with a VL diff as:

Better ratios for a non overdrive V8 ie 3.54 Vs 4.xx
Disc brakes bolt on
Commodore tailshaft flange
Easier to get 5 stud rims
Cheaper locker options
Just over half the weight

Diff was only 15mm wider so we did not shorten it. Just cut the VL mounts off and welded on the Rodeo pads.

Will clean it all up with wire wheel/paint when I get it home.

This is the motor as it stands now. Still waiting on a water pump that seems to have gone missing in the mail :/

Started on the tray today. Is it shonky that I am using an old gate as a tray?It weighs about 20kg compared to the 221kg alloy one. It was at the tip and the guy said I could have it.

It will be coming home this week for me to get started on all the things left to do. I'm hoping to have the battery, fuel tank, trans oil cooler and tray made and mounted in the coming 2 weeks.

Thanks so far to:
Kyle (from Kyle's conversions) for the conversion
Dale for all the help, exhaust bits, fuel tank, windage tray etc
Blackbart (from PF) for the IM, TB, fuel pump mount and fuel rails
Jim (from PF) for the cheap auto and facet pump
Uncle (from PF) (hopefully for the chaser rims)

good looking project mate.. will be a ripper when done.

Im interestd to see how this ends up as a mate did a Lexus V8 into a hilux with give or take 250rwkw. Went through numerous tyre/shock/spring combos to try and get the arse end to behave and actually be able to get off a set of lights with more than idle revs on board.

Ended up putting the 2.7 back in and selling the thing as he had enough of getting nowhere.

Will be keeping an eye on this build, good job

Yeah it'll be a challenge for sure. The reason for chopping 10 inches out of the chassis was to try and get some more weight over the rear wheels. I've got a few other ideas on improving rear end traction as well.

Got the battery mounted in the rear, also mounted the auto cooler out back with an Excel thermo fan mounted on top. Got the rear exhaust tacked together just need some flanges to complete it. Tailshaft should be ready to be picked up tomoro.

Thanx heaps, mate, I'll let you know. Sonny has come to the party with a set of coils. I've just got to get down to syd to get them. Fuel rails came from a mate, AC I don't need, running a Th350 so don't need powertrain computer.

Out with the old seats

In with the "new" seats

http://img38.imageshack.us/i/picture30062009002.jpg/

Decided to so with some Suzuki Swift seats. Light, cheap (15 bucks) and later on I can update by bolting in GTi seats. Found 11 bucks under the old seats so 4 dollar seat upgrade :)

BIG thanx to Sonny at Marranos for helping out with some coil packs and some L98 springs!

Tailshaft is done and in. Started making up a pivot for the drivebelt this morning. Bolted on the Ls6 intake, tb, injectors and rails.

Thanx, mate.

Was fitting the coil packs today and noticed that two inner head bolts were missing. Pulled the manifold off and the F...... C.... who sold me the engine has kept/lost/stolen the F...... head bolts! ARRGGGHHHH!!!! More stuff I have to beg/borrow/buy :(

Anywho, soldiered on and dummied up the radiator. I still don't know whether to run it where it is or to recess it into the radiator support panel. Where it is is easier but aftermarket thermo would have to be bought and radiator hose and intake hose room is TIGHT. Recessing it is harder but I can use the AU thermos I have and there would be more room. I would have to cut out a largish support beam which I would rather not do..

http://img107.imageshack.us/i/chuck05072009001.jpg/

Ran the auto cooler lines (taken from an AU at the wreckers) and played around a bit with the tray. Things are progressing well.

YOU MIGHT NEED TO STOP AND THINK FOR A MINUTE. WHY WOULD SOMEONE REMOVE 2 X HEAD BOLTS.? DONT SOUND RIGHT. MAYBE THEY HAVE BEEN OFF. MAYBE THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG. DOES THE MOTOR TURN OVER.? SAVE SOME TIME, MONEY AND GRIEF AND CHECK IT OUT.
OTHER THAN THAT WELL DONE ON YOUR PROGRESS. HOPE YOU GET IT HAPPENING.:goodjob:

sorry about the caps. not shouting.

When we swapped the sump over it was missing the windage tray and pickup so I pulled the rocker covers off and everything was there. There are pistons, rods and a crank. We turned it over and it has some compression so.... :shrugsshoulders:

It doesn't look like it has been apart but maybe he needed the bolts for something or sold them on ebay.....I dunno....

nice build.

good to see some thinking outside the box.

just a thought how bout putting the radiator out the back under the tray with deflector plate for air flow and au thermos. this should save the cutting but present other possible probs. will get tiny bit more weight over the rear

Stock head bolts can NOT be reused so why would he want to sell them on ebay?

Managed to source some 275/60 x 15 tyres on some chaser rims to dummy up the tray. They're old, hard and worn but perfect for dummying up. Managed to get the radiator where I wanted and have started on the mounts for it.

Well, after a bit of a break to let my shoulder heal I;m back into this.

Bit of interest lately in the whole 10's for 10k deal with Zoom dedicating a whole issue to the subject. They seemed to make it look easy so I am going to have a shot at 9's for $9k. The car so far owes me about 3500 bucks. Big expenses to come are the rebuilt/strengthn of the Th350, convertor, nitrous and engine harness.

I think the whole thing is going to come down to how much the auto/convertor set me back...

Tomoro I'll get the rad mounted and get a auto shifter for it.

Managed to score an alloy tray for 50 bucks from the wrecker and spent the day cutting it up to fit. Took 3 feet out of it's length and 1 foot out of it's width.

http://img9.imageshack.us/i/chuck30909001.jpg/

Looking to try and run a factory chev converter as they are half the price of a custom and second hand ones come up from time to time. Researching it now but I think I only have to machine up a crank spigot.

I'm going to spend 1 day a week on it and hope to have it ready by Xmas.

Looking at bringing an FTI convertor in from the states for about 650US. Also looks like I'll be getting a loom from Sideshow at the end of next month.

Local wrecker (the one on the truck) closed down last week so spent my "work day" at the yard getting stuff before they closed. Got a manual steering box, VL handbrake ass'y and some spare axles :/
