Hi there
I have an VZ HSV Clubsport R8 Z Series with 36,000 k's on the clock. Runs like a dream. I've noticed the past few mornings and late afternoons (after I finish work) there is a tick tick or tap tap noise for 2-3 seconds after I start the car up (hydraulic lifter noise?) until it gets oil pressure.
Does not do it through the day if I'm driving and stopping and starting the engine. And it has only started since the weather has turned brutally cold.
Anything to worry about? Or take it to the dealer?
Cheers

How loud is it?
If its more of a 'tick tick' noise and only occurs until the motor is at its running temp, then i would not worry about it for now as it has got very cold down here. Having said that a good test would be when you come home from work just let her sit as you normally would for 5-10 min then start her up just to see if its still there.
If it is still there then maybe use a thicker oil than the Mobil 1. That might solve the 'tick tick' noise.

Hi there
Thanks for the reply. It's definitely not there after 10 minutes or even 30 minutes only after it's been standing for at least 6 - 8 hours.

Its normal, LS1/2's are generally noisy (you should hear mine) but a decent brand oil can help to reduce the noise. I'd try Castrol Magnatec, seemed to work for my car somewhat.

Just give it an oil change mate and it will be fine as a tick for 2 secs is nothing at all to worry about. 36000 k's is just about run in for your motor and unless your hearing loud strange noises just drive it and don't be afraid to give it some stick.

Just out of interest, how often do you change your oil & what type are you currently using ?????

Hi there
Just bought the car in the last 5 months from the local HSV dealer and I guess it would have the oil they use. It does have a Castrol lube sticker, but that may not mean they use that brand.

Funny how the HSV dealership can use the right sticker and not the right oil.
My last oil change i used Mobil 1 as do the HSV's and did cost me extra, well bugger me dead!
After around 6000K's of no ticks i now get just a faint tick or two.

I got that Tick Yick noise, turned out to be the power stearing pump when cold.
I removed the filter and replaced the fluid, no more noise.

I'd be draining the Mobil1 out of it real soon as it is too thin. Most lifters will make some noise when cold at times. Try some good quality oil like Penrite and most of your start up noises should quieten down considerably :)
Hi Guys,
My VY LS1 made a ticky noise for a few seconds after a cold start. I think it has to do with the big alloy block needing to expand to operating temp.
I phoned COME and discussed the noise with them. From memory, they descibed it as sorta normal for the engine. Even carefully blueprinted LSx engines are reputed to make these noises. Maybe not quote as much though.
I always ran Shell Helix Ultra in mine and I guess it's a thinesh synthetic oil compared to some mineral oils. Not sure if a thicker oil would reduce start-up ticks. It might reduce oil consumption between 10k oil changes.
