My last 2 Toshis (on vista) have probably had about an hour at best from new on Power Saver mode. My 1st one with XP lasted a bit more interesting enough. Couple of mates with HPs about the same.

Not starting a MAC vs PC debate but the Macbook series last for a good 2hrs, probably one of the good points about them.

Another thing is you leave it on charge all the time with battery in it battery life goes down.

thanks mate i though they would last a lot longer then that :bawl: i want to do some logging with my efilive V2 so 40 min doesn't give me a lot of time between charges as i dont have a car charger and it says in efilive V2 book not to use car 12v power ?

my 1yo HP notebook originally went about 1½ hr when new after setting power scheme
...no problems

I went to a mate who manages a battery place...he got me an aftermarket battery
(keep the OE as spare)...about 3 hrs just sitting there..hardwork about 2 hours :goodjob:

You can get around this by using an inverter rather than just a car adaptor. A bit of an outlay just to do data logging but you may want to look at an aftermarket battery from Battery Master or somewhere similar.

Just remember that EFILive "strongly" advise against the use of inverters powering laptops while logging.

Personally I just use the BBL feature and check the logs afterwards.

Now, re: Battery life. The battery will last as long as it lasts. There are way too many variables involved that effect battery life. If you want to try and extend the run time, try the following...

Set the power scheme in Windows to "max battery" ( be careful that if you are doing logging, that this doesn't power down the HDD mid log.... )
Set the screen brightness as low as practical.
Turn off the wireless adapter, including blue-tooth etc.
Shutdown all applications not being used, including tool bars and "helper" applications.
Cycle the battery a few times. Sure Lithium Ion batteries are meant to be "memory free" but they still can get confused as to the amount of charge they have.

Finally, if you are using the laptop for logging, don't forget to check for HDD protection applications running while logging. Most modern laptops run an application that senses if the laptop has been dropped and it parks the HDD heads to prevent damage if the laptop hits the floor. Sitting the laptop on a car seat can trigger this application and you end up with no data in the log.

As said before, BBL is your friend. My record so far is a single 3hr log file from an E38. Thats over 20MB of log data in a single sitting, all saved to the SD card in the V2.

Wow you all have terrible battery life.

I have a Dell Lattitude for work, and when at home it lasts 4 hours on the battery.

Black Box Logging: Where you set up all your PID's and load them into a configuration file in the V2. You then insert an SD memory card ( up to 2GB capacity ) and when you want to log, you select your PID list and then start logging. The log file will then be saved on to the SD card and once finished, can be read via a card reader or the EFILive Explorer program while it's in the V2. With a 2GB card, you can save about 160 Hours of data from an E38

Have a look on the EFILive forum, there's a bunch of threads on it. Send me a PM if you want to go into it in detail.

thanks mate
so really i dont need a laptop if got the V2 set up ??
log with the V2
save to 2GB SD card in the V2
and then i could view it all on my main PC :) and send the logs off to ostrack
he wants to see some logs of the new A6 tune he put in last night as he cant access power torques engine tune as it is locked to see what they have done regards torque management on the up /down shift ect
i would like to log some round town driving and some long hiway trips where i can get WOT shifts :)

Correct. You can set up the V2 on a desktop PC, then log to the SD card. Then copy the file off the SD card and view it on the desktop. Hopefully later this year, you will also be able to save tune files on the SD card and then flash them to the car using just the V2.

you can get much betetr milliamphour rated batteries cheap off the net (buyer beware) that apparently have better life.... same thing with my Nikon DSLR , no probs

have got a new one coming in this arvo for my HP lappy as the original has had the dick ... will be interesting to see if it 1) works, 2) is better / longer.

Original HP battery was around 90 minutes .. depending on usage. Watching a dvd from a video file onboard didnt chew much, but lots of processing, wireless access or cdrom access etc tends to chew up more power.

No sense in repeating everything, but +1 Agreed this works well.
