Hello everyone, I'm looking at a 2004 VZ SV6 Commodore which I've noticed has come up for sale for $16,500, it has a 6sp manual but I'm not sure if it has the 190Kw Alloytech motor, instead of the normal one.
Is there any way to tell? Thanks in advance.

mate i am pretty sure all sv6 came with the 190kw motor. it was the lower models that had a 170kw. As my old vz s ute only had the 170, and i wasn't happy about that.

VZ not sure, The wife has A VE SV6 and it's not bad. Performace wise they shouldn't be to different, VE has more power but VZ is lighter.

take 1 for a drive. the vz was a touch thirsty from what ive been told, the VE is much better.they are a good engine for a six, not as torquey as the ford six, as for tuning them your choice is very limited, not a big market for them unfortunatly. hit the search button you will be there for hrs

i had a vz s ute, and well on the highway it's not much better then my ve ss ute with a cam. i never had a problem with it and took it on a 15000km drive accross australia without a prob.

I have the Alloytec 190 in my CX6.. It's a tad thirsty (in a 2 tonne car) but it get's along VERY well!!!
Easy to work out what the donk is mate. The badge under the indicator will say ALLOYTEC190

Engine covers might be different to. My VE has "High output" badge on the engine cover.

Excellent, thanks very much guys. I decided to check over some cars, and came across the SV6 and what got my attention was that its a 6sp manual.

IIRC the badges were deleted sometime during 2005 to save a few cents per car. (Lucky they did that or GM might have gone bankrupt...oh, wait).
Not that it matters because, as others have said, they all have the high output V6.

Had a VZ SV6 with the 5 speed auto. drank about the same amount as the SS without the benefit.
totally stock pulled 140.6rwkw at a dyno day here in Canberra, beating Kit's V6 wagon by 0.2
bwahahaha

If you drive the Alloytec like regular drivers would, and not like a Formula 1 driver on a Sunday drive, the Alloytec will overall be noticeably more economical than a V8.
Depends what you want as your main priority, and how you are as a driver.

over the 2 years I had it most of the 172000km was highway with very little town driving and on trips was always in the 9l/100 range (same as the SS) and that is with both cars being driven in the same manner.
You had to pick your overtaking spots as obviously it didn't have the same pickup as the SS.

I would grab it - one of the sweetest manuals you will drive
I have had VZ SV6 auto, VE SV6 manual and VE SV6 auto
all use around 8.8l/100 on non e10 ULP

By the way, hows the clutch in these things, I just drove a Suzuki Swift Sport and its a real bastard to drive slowly because of no torque down low, and the clutch engages at the last possible area in the pedal which makes it a real pain in the ass to drive.

In standard tune, sub 8 economy is definitely possible, I've seen an indicated 7.5 for the run Sydney to Newcastle with an average speed over 100. It's the diff ratio that helps this, it's quite tall in the auto, I'm not sure about the manual. It can be changed if you want more poke.

with the standard diff 3rd is the best overtaking gear, pulls well from 80 to 150 (private test track of course)

Whats the standard diff ratio in the 6sp manual? I'm guessing 3.45?

if you put an exhaust an instake on the VZ 170 ive seen it do 7l averagefrom melb to adelaide. Best ive seen him do it was 6.5l, but he was taking it fairly easy

Mum and Dad's cars do roughly 7.2L/100Km calculated manually at each fill up and they're 1999 Ford Festiva and 2003 Mazda 323 Astina Shades, much smaller cars. 95% of our driving is highway because we live out in the sticks.
Doesn't sound like a bad car, especially if it does so little on highway.

I agree pretty much with the sentiment that an eight doesn't seem to use much if any more than a six, especially on a trip - I have a VS V6 exec, a VX II Calais 5.7 and a VX Clubby, they all seem to use about 10 l/ 100Km on a trip. The Clubby is a manual and gets at least Mobil 6000 (95) fuel, the others only get 91 unleaded (not E10) and are autos.

Well my VZ Calais is the 190 Alloytec, and i do mostly freeway driving, and have found the ave. fuel to sit around 8l/100. Instant usage on the freeway is about 6-7L on nice flat road with cruise control on. For the size of the car and the power it makes for a 6, the fuel efficiency is really good. My previous car was a Subaru Liberty with a 2.5L Boxer 4, and it averaged 10L/100km...
