Guys this show is truly awesome. In all honesty I rate it up there with Top Gear UK. Unfortunately I need to watch it on the net but that's ok! :teach: If I win a substantial amount from next weeks Oz Lotto I will put some funding into this show to get it onto digital TV, I love it :goodjob:
And then I might run for Prime Minister, but that's for another time ;)

Great to have something better than the C31 image quality. Having C31 is good but the broadcast image quality is sadly lacking (and I get a good signal).

Here’s a little something we’ve been working on this week. The customer came to us all the way from Singleton NSW (nth west of Newcastle) with initial plans for a stroker 5ltr, but after discussion the decision was made to go for an LS based motor and T56 adapted with an off the shelf kit.
We supplied a brand new L98 crate motor that we have put one of our CNC ported cylinder head and cam packages in, which should get us around 320rwkw! Add to this a brand new T56 6-speed gearbox fitted with a custom shifter and heavy duty clutch and this will certainly get the VS moving a little better than 140rwkw 5.0ltr that its replacing!
We have built a custom dual 3 inch exhaust with off the shelf 4-1 headers supplied by Castle Auto Electrical. We have also custom fitted, PCM controlled, late model thermo fans to the standard HD V8 radiator and a custom made air box to house a 9 inch long pod filter. The hydraulic clutch is powered by a highly modified pedal box fitted with a late model hydraulic clutch master cylinder.
The idea was to keep the car looking as simple as possible under the bonnet with the use of OEM parts as much as possible. We went with the cable 90mm throttle body for ease of conversion but this could be done with the fly-by-wire just as easy with some more pedal box massaging.
The fuel system has been upgraded with the fitment of a Walbro fuel pump and custom filter/ 58 psi reg set up, we have retained the use of the standard L98 fuel injectors with adapters also from Castle Auto Electrical. We have adapted the L98 power steering pump and lines, fitted a new LS1 160amp alternator and could have retained the A/C but the customer made the decision to leave it out.
Other things like the fuel purge solenoid and VS charcoal canister operation has been retained so you could realistically perform this conversion with 100% emissions compliance and legality with the tick of approval from your local engineer.
The conversion components, again from Castle Auto Electrical, have allowed the engine to sit nice and low in the engine bay with ample clearance for header fitment once the firewall had some minor massaging. The tailshaft has also been upgraded to handle the 100% power increase.

No, it was discussed with the customer and seeing as though he is from NSW the engineering would need to be done there. I will be giving the customer a good contact for engineering in NSW.

We have not had a problem with the Castle auto parts, they firewall did take alittle beating to make them fit but we were told about that before the job was started, the conversion parts have been well designed and simple to fit.
Great conversion guys
Was there any thought given by the owner to detail the engine bay and clean up the wiring while the engine was out?
Once finished, the engine bay will look like the engine was factory fitted, this was the aim rather than building a show car. The PCM is mounted in the car and all the looms are neat and tidy.

Matt.

Maybe not the crossmembers, but I have heard of a few cases where the IRS mounting fails and tears the mount to the chassis or something...
My old VR stroker with IRS met the same fate not too long after I sold it.

BAD355 you are correct, the rear crossmembers do crack. The RTA issued an inspection bulletin for all VS commodores but my VR had the exact same problem. Mine started cracking around the mounting area for the diff.

I would rather pay $2000 for custom ones in Stainless that will fit without having to be a smash to fit.
CAE and CRS ones are mild steel too. The 4 into 1s used in this build cost $1500 from CAE... an extra $500 for custom ones in stainless is money well spent imo.
Good work on the conversion guys... Looks good. I too used the CAE conversion bits to do mine except for the extractors, loom etc.
Did you guys strengthen the k-frame where you cut it?
Also did you notice how close the bottom of the sump is in the middle of the k-frame? It's only about 1-2mm with the CAE mounts. In time when that rubber sags the sump will bottom out on this. Not trying to pick... I just thought i would make you aware. I made 8mm plates that go inbetween the 2 piece mounts. It lifts the motor enough to give the clearance required legally of 10mm. You also get a tad more room to play with the exhaust next to the rails and the motor sits well under the bonnet.

In the first post
We went with the cable 90mm throttle body for ease of conversion but this could be done with the fly-by-wire just as easy with some more pedal box massaging.

yeh read that but wanted to know why ease of conversion... generally when going from scratch with these conversions is can work out more expensive going the cable throttle body route....... fitting a fly by wire pedal would be the mater of welding 3 bolts to the floor...
thats all... otherwise looks magic:goodjob:

The engine and head and cam upgrade is one thing, then you need to add a clutch, a brand new six speed trans, tailshaft mods, a full custom 3" exhaust, custom clutch master cylinder moutings, hydraulic lines, new alternator and starter motor, power steering pump, all the brakets and bolts, throttle body, fuel system upgrades, cooling system, custom shifter, wiring harness and conversion components and a crap load of labour...
Its not a cheap excersise, especially when everything is new, but go and build a 5.0 litre to that sort of power level! ouch!

Sure its all Fords in this one but still interesting viewing for the Holden crowd!
First up we cover a custom dyno tune on an FG XR6 Turbo, then take it out on the street to see have it drives once the true power has been unleashed.
Next we tackle a very different beast, an FPV Super Pursuit, powered by the 5.4l quad cam v8. To this machine we fit a full exhaust system and Yella Terra supercharger kit. See up close the difference between the factory exhaust system and the aftermarket unit, and inside the supercharger and intercooler kit. We then take it out on the road to see how it compares to the turbo 6 Falcon.

Nang3, the tune only is basically to the limit of the fuel injectors. They are larger than those fitted to the BA-BF turbo-6.

For those Holden fans with seared eye balls from Episode 8 we have some welcomed relief with coverage of HPF at the LS1 Drag Nationals.
Follow the build of Tims VY Ute as we put together a package for his car to better his 9.8 second time slip. In go the tubs and a 402 cube iron blocked motor and out it goes to the track. We’ll keep track of Tims day as well as our old friend Garry Pope driving his boosted Coupe 4, and Robs Calais for the first time at the track since the head and cam upgrade went in.
We also manage to squeeze in some tech content with Heathcote Raceways very own Russell as he takes us around one of his jet cars explaining how it all works.

98 Octane, Ethanol, E10.... all words which we are hearing more and more both in the news and on TV and also by customers wanting the best performance out of their car.
With this we have decided to answer the questions with knowledge by testing a variety of different fuels back to back on the dyno. The results are definitely interesting and may change both the performance car industry and even the environment in the future.
See the results of testing 91 Octane Unleaded, 98 Octane Unleaded, E10 Ethanol Blend, E85 Ethanol Blend and a 120 Octane dedicated race fuel.
To give some relief from the dyno action we also head down to the Latrobe Valley Street Machine Show with a few cars and get up close and personal with one of the organisers.

how much of the firewall did you have to "massage" to fit the extractors?
Could you please answer this question?

The cross members stronger than the car & aint gunna give way.
Attention will be required in the braking system, steering & suspension.
Cheers
VYT
Ah yes VS brakes..... hopefully they've been upgraded.
how much of the firewall did you have to "massage" to fit the extractors?
Sorry Alastair,
The extractors are a direct fit to VB-VL so the firewall did require a resonable amount of adjustment around where the heater hose plate bolts up to the firewall at the lower bolt. You have to move the firewall back around 1.5-2.0" to clear the primary pipe and then round it into the trans tunnel.
Hope that helps.
Matt.

This weeks episode of Oz Garage represents the future…
Our obsession is to create an Australian car show like no other, given a real budget and production team this is just a taste of what Oz Garage could be.
Featuring:
- Rob and Paul battle out the age old debate, petrol vs diesel.
- Tech tips with Rob's dad.
- A tribute to our friend Lyle Lemon.
- The Pioneers of Speed with Norm Hardinge.

Ok sweet, would you suggest beating the firewall? Or would you jsut chuck tri Y's on? 2"'s is a fair bit.

would a good set of custom extractors stop this problem?? or is there just not enough room

Yep thats the ideal spot... or as a SC member has done cut a few rows of the radiator down and install a OTR.
I'm making a similar induction system for my LSX with dual boxes one mounted on each side.
Link? :D

Its probably not as bad as that, i would suggest its worth spending the time beating it.

This is the second part of the two episodes displaying what OzGarage could be with a real budget and production team.
Introducing the 'Lolux Project' with help from the boys at DW Customs, this is a car that will redefine what the Horsepower Factory are capable of.
We also check out the new TRD Hilux to see how the factory offering compares with our heavily modified Hilux.

What did you do with the driveshaft?
Completely custom?
Modify a LS1 T56 driveshaft?
Modify a VS V8 driveshaft?

yokes are same as turbo 700 or 350 and you will need to cut roughly 70mm from the front half of the VS shaft and have it rewelded and balanced

mmmm interesting, lived in good ol' sunny singleton all my life and got know idea who this bloke is, have seen it parked at the tyre centre (presume thats where he works) all the time but never seen it driving or anything, seen the 'horsepower factory' sticker on the front window and thought i'd better come on here to find a write up, tidy stuff :goodjob:

I'm also doing one of these conversions currently, collecting parts for it at the moment as I have the engine sitting in the shed waiting to go into a VN.
Any advice you can offer on the range of engine mounts available for the application? Also, I've heard of modifying the steering rack mounts to allow clearance required to leave the starter motor on the RHS, does this allow any sort of exhaust piping to get past?
With the clutch setup, how much is T56/later model stuff and how much is VS? Guessing a VS master cyl and T56 slave cyl? Any dramas getting the T56 into the tunnel? I think VLs have issues with this..
I have 10000 other questions on the swap too but I'd better not throw them in all at once. Might start another thread for them.
Any info appreciated
Sam

He drove the car back home, some 1110km and was getting around 700km per tank.Just wondering which tank is fitted to this car? There has been a bit of talk re the range this car has on the highway. Is it fitted with the standard 63 litre tank or the optional 80/84 litre tank from V8 sedans?
