Ordered a SSV Ute manual on the 16th June and it shall be here this week all going well.

Wanting to up the horsepower from the cam only Calais I came up with the figure 400rwkw in my head.

To achieve this and keep the costs reasonable I have chosen FI. Single Turbo......and so begins Stage 1 of the project

Stage 1 350rwkw

Dont have the ute yet but have commenced ordering the following items

>09 SSV Phantom Ute Manual
>ASE T-800 Turbo Kit
>2 Bar MAP Sensor
>Custom Plates
>Twin 3" Xforce Cat Back
>Ballistic Racing Cats
>Custom dump to cat system
>Techedge Wideband/Sensor/Gauge
>Custom made Oil Catch Can
>Custom Mafless Tune by Oztrack
>Tint

Heaps of pics to follow, will take a while as I am only home 1 week out of 3.

Thanks Paul, my goal is a 10.# but I am not sure it will do it in Stage 1 format. Eventually the Calais will relinquish all her goodies across to the Ute, Coilovers, Wheels and brakes. Its a matter of finding the time and buttering up Takeitez  for the task:)

Damn the limo driver gonna become a race driver, now you shall know the pain of trying to launch and get every change right. Will be interesting to see. Shame you didn't cam this one first to see how good a driver you are.

Its funny how you (with your ute), Steve (VX I think), Will (440 torana) and myself ( umm believe it or not a 280zx) have all decided to head down a dedicated car track rather than further enhancing/destroying our nice rides.

It was at Wakefield a week and a half ago when it sunk in for me, saw a car on its roof, no cage and one lucky bloke. Made me realise that we all have been lucky. For me a cage is gonna be pretty quick with a decent seat and harness.

Good luck Boyley, learn how to drive that thing and if your good enough maybe you can get that 11 sec pass in my ute next Nationals (if there is one).

How come you are going the 800 instead of the 1000?

Should be a really nice ride once you have finished what you have planed so far. Good luck with it and hurry up with the pics.

I have no intention of going increasing the capacity of the engine and the T-800 looks like it suits the L98 nicely.

Hey Rob,
I reckon you should do the clutch and rip in your first stage. You will fry the stock clutch and the rip is an awsome piece of stick once you get used to it.
Best of luck matey and im following your epic here for sure:goodjob:

Hey fella, yeah Andy is genuine mate sure is:goodjob: as you said very interested in what you're doing:)

I am happy with the figures says there's a 10% loss through the drivetrain which is probaly correct on a brand new tight package. It was 104kpa on the baro too and air was cold as:)

Troy Stage 2 will be hunting 400+kw's will be good to see if this turbo has 700hp as spec'd. I only need 75% of that.

Mate I will be home for good as of this weekend so will be paying attention to this from then on...probably two more weeks I reckon

The kit is from ASE retails for $7400 from memory

I have a mate whos fitting it so am getting a nice deal but theres some serious hours involved so if I was you I'd get and supply and fit quote from your local supplier. You'll also need 2 bar map sensor and some decent injectors. A fuel system would be advisable also if your going over 6PSI.

I'm sure you could get out of it for $10K done properly, bu then theres the clutch kit which is $1500-2000 as the stock clutch wont handle it.

Drop in and see Dale at CHE or Sonny at Marranos theyll tell you whats required. You need to understand that horsepower aint cheap :(

Mate I am not doing boost control initially as I need to get the fuel system sorted properly. I have a plan for fuel but it will be revelaed in Stage 2 of the Project.

Eventually I will add a 2 stage controller as I dont want the temptation of cranking the boost in the wrong conditions.

as for the sump... i could have done the oil return with it in the car, but i didn't want any shavings or swarf getting into the sump... even with an oil drain and change you wouldn't catch it all.

it only took a couple of hours to get the sump off the ute and it's worth it to save blocking the pick up with alloy shavings and seizing the thing solid!!! that'd suck big time..

Good idea, i got a bit mixed up in what turbo kit he was running. I think with the low mount kits the scavenge pump pumps the oil to the rocker cover, which is why i was wondering about the sump removal. Then the brain started working again and i remembered the oil drains back to the sump with this kit. :)

Really? It picks up the drivers side rocker cover then runs down to the back of the throttle body where theres a hose tail. I'm only running 6-7lb boost so hopefully it copes.

Hi great job so far, are you keeping with std brakes or is there a upgrade in mind.

Brakes will remain standard, I will throw a decent set of pads on though. The main reason for this is for ease of slipping some 17" drag tyres on the back when we go drag racing:)

Ok mate we've sorted this out now.

The right rocker cover vent and the valley cover vent will be teed together and routed to the catch can. Then we'll route the outlet of the catchcan to the intake pipe of the turbo.

The tuning is progressing well and we should have her on the dyno next weekend for some WOT stuff, I will get some videos of that.

It sounds awsome mate, really beaty down low, screams its head off up high and hissing a fair bit too, but I am going to plumb the screamer to the exhaust and the blow off to the intake to make it a little less obnoxious.

I highly recommend getting a turbo :goodjob:

I hate reading stuff like this... I promised myself I wouldnt go stupid on my car, not again as I sold the last one once it became a bit too wild..

But im sick and ****in tired of these fords boys in their clapped out 6s thinkin they have tough turbo cars...

**** IT!! Cancelling my booking with Chev for Monday... Going all out.. Big turbo, stock motor all business.

Well done rob:goodjob:, i agree with the screamer pipes being obnoxious,. I had to install another wastegate befor i went to the the wsid private day a few weeks ago and we didnt have time to plumb it back in with the other wastegate which of couse still hasnt been finished:rofl:, once the gate opens its just a stupidly loud sound which is quite weird in my setup with it dumping 4cyl's in the screamer and 4cyl's in the exhaust.
Be sure to check in when you hit the dyno and drag strip again:goodjob:.

Yeah it's something I'm only learning now mate but with a 6.0L engine trying to run on low boost theres a lot of excess exhaust to discard, hence why a larger wastgate is required or install two, one off the manifold and one over near the other manifold on the Xover pipe.

What size gates you running Tim?

2 x 38mm with 6psi springs, one off each bank. It was this or 1 60mm and i thought the 2 smaller gates would give more airflow thus better control with as close to equal pressure bettween banks.

Yeah same as mine off a 7lb spring hoping to keep boost no higher than 8-9PSI. One day when I get courageous I may whack 5lb springs in and get a boost controller and a decent fuel system but for now its cost me too much.:)

Tomorrow I'm having the dump to catback redone because the second wastgate has caused some issues with the peice Gloze made.. So unfortunately his work of art will be decommissioned. I am going with a single pipe from the dump pipe to the catback where it has the kiss-pipe. So it will be single cat with both the screamers plumbed in before it, if that makes sense. I'll whack some shots up tomorrow.

Then later this week if all goes to plan off to the dyno for some serios WOT tuning just in time for the Tassie cruise and then the private drag day on the 1st Nov:)

Well after a lot of fluffing about trying to get the Dual Stage COntroller to work it has been discarded for now.

The car made 305kW on 5PSI so we then installed a Boost Tee and squeezed 332kW on 8PSI. Its not as high as I expected but it made what it made and the blacktop shall be the true dyno :)

It was a nice safe environment to do the final tuning and Steve Oztrack spent 4 hrs on it today getting it just right.

Sorry Utesrule I plum forgot my camera mate so no pics or vids.

So it gained 105hp against the original run.

We had the Tas Commodores Drag day today at Tarmac Dragway TAS.

The track has been leased by TDRA and they have been flat out trying to get the timing working all day.

I had one run as a sighter with no timing.

First timed run was 12.77 no MPH but I estimated around the 120 MPH mark from my logs

2nd and third runs 12.9 and 12.8 and one final run 12.9 again.

It was a warm day and the Baro was 97kpa with high humiditiy and the track was very green.

So it was good to have a lash before the first round of the nationals :)

Was analysing the log last night and IAT was showing 74degC on two runs

The IAT is a in the engine bay on the intake pipe so will move it to just after the heat exchanger down low where heatsoak is not as prevalent.

Also ECT was quite high too so I will install a 160 deg stat this week.

With these factors around 5 degrees of timing was being pulled and bucket loads of fuel which would have robbed it a few tenths.

I have to admit it will take me a couple of meets to sort my burnouts and clutch control though as I am no genius with three pedals

Tip of the day,get tires spinning second gear on water bring up revs, left foot off break mash go pedal and skid through the tree, picking up all the vht you can, reverse back, stage, left pedal on floor, right pedal almost on floor about 4k, let left pedal out as if it was on fire...hold on and steer, i found this the best method for me when mine was manual....

I sorted a couple of issues out this week and hopefully will be faster at the first round of the tassie nats next weekend.

IAT sensor was located in the intake pipe in the eninge bay and was suffering massive heatsoak with the IAT sensing 75 deg C, so I have relocated it to just after the intercooler but down low out of the engine bay. Temps go no higher than 34 deg C at idle now.

Also ECT was showing as high as 110 dec C so I have fitted a cooler (160deg C) thermostat which has got the coolant temps to 80-90 deg C now.

Both these mods will see more timing as I was seeing only 1-2 degrees at WOT in 3rd and 4th Gear so topend was compromised severely.

It's only theory but I reckon there's another 50 hp on the table there.

There is also 100kg of crap I could peel off her too but I like the idea of running an 11 at full weight which includes the spare, jack etc etc

Hey Boyley, The car looks tough as mate. I think the M6 VE ute will wheelspin with so much torque at hand. I also tuned Charons car(TT1000 GTS LS3) at the track and we got the safest and most hp this way with no more then 11 deg of timing on board, it was happy to sit in relatively high IATs and still command a real 11 deg of timing-11.5:1 afr and 2.0 sec 120-150 splits we got a 11.8@120 mph in a full weight gts with around 137 kpa 5.5psi boost on factory rubber. We have experimented with the A6 for willowbank and it is setup for second gear launches as 1st and 2nd went no where to much wheelspin 3rd gear the GTS ended up in the next lane lol, We have found on 8psi 2nd gear launch is much stronger more tractable and should see near 125mph on street tyres at willowbank.

Focus on keeping the tune safe keep the timing down and fuel in mid to high 11s it will be safe there, if it falls over in the deep end put 7 heat range plugs in it. All you have to do is keep the power down in that beast and it will run low 11s all day on a prepped track!

My best 60 was on hoosier 255/50/16 at benaraby I pulled 60 footers in the 1.6s consistently, Somedays in 1.8s depended on the track either way the car didnt like it I am settling for some front runners and different front shocks also possibly airbags and full slick at the rear. When mine was bolt on would do 1.6s with cam only I struggled to get below 1.9 but I never ever raced it on a prepped track with cam only with the car setup right anyhow. With the blower fast 60 footers were easier as it would refuse to bog down nor break out so easily, more tractable.

Can't wait to test out Mackay, I have heard it is a great track to race on.

Trev I will have to describe it to you mate because its tucked away from sight.

Where the pipe is on the downstream side of the intercooler I drilled a hole on the engine bay side and tapped it out 1/4" bsp because I'm using the threaded IAT out of the VN 5lt (note I dont think this helps with the heatsoak issue and may change to a plastic one, one day) I extended the IAT loom to reach that far, as long as its after the intercooler and not in the engine bay you should be right.

Cheers mate, I shall look into it. Have you monitored ECT with the new thermostat ?? If so does it take alot longer to get up to operating temps ?? It is something I think I may need to do.

Thanks,
Trev...

Trev the temps rise normally but simply maintain a cooler temp at the ECT sensor. It will keep your engine bay temps down slightly which will not heatsoak your manifold so much. Remember the operating temps of or turbo cars is naturally higher than a NA motor so effectively I am getting operating temps back a little.

Talk with Girch about this he may or may not agree, as this is one of those things some reckon is not a good idea.

Cheers Rob

Went to the dragway again yesterday and ran a new PB of 12.2 in the first round of eliminations, that was with some braking at the deep end and I still broke out by 0.5 from my dial in so a little more development will see the car go 11s, I had a best mph pf 118mph and 60ft of 1.8 on the day.

I need to somehow get the air from outside the car as the filter is tucked i behind the bumper and not seeing any external cold air so my IAT's are still way to high when the car is static.

Will get the bumper off next week and see what I can do about it

Just a thought about this Robo, why not shorten the intake pipe so that its not behind the bumper say run the filter straight off the turbo for the track, and remove the head light? That way you will know that you are getting external air.

If you didnt want to go THAT far, I'm sure it would just be a simple matter of removing the fog light from the front bar.

Only thing is to remove VE headlights you have to take the whole front bar off - i think that would get annoying!!!

I don't really have a solution unfortunately......
Unless you wanted to get the HDT retro style cut outs in the bar - I have no idea!

Good luck - love the look of the ute, and the t800 kit looks tempting....

Yeah Kim I will take the front bar off this week I am thinking the plastic stone tray may need some holes cut in it and maybe some sort of ducting but time will tell

Thats right mate the bar has to come off each time the light is removed so that aint treally practical for something I drive to the track in.

Thansk for the compliment also:)

They don't make it easy do they? haha...

I think maybe just remove/cut out both fog lights and cover the holes left behind with some mesh.

You need the phone number for ABC Driving school?? Surely your not having a go Rob. Sounds silly but stick a video camera (with duct tape) to the side of your passenger seat headrest. Maybe if you can actually see what you are doing wrong you may be able to work at it.
Can you honestly say you have watched the tacho for the whole first 60'?
Might help.. You know you should be at 11.5,
I know its still new, but you need to be rougher to cut a good time. Flog thru gears and punish the clutch. With 1.8 and 118 your only where the taxi was (that must shit you) Its your drivin buddy!

Maybe give someone else a go and see whether there is any improvement?

sounds vaguely familiar to my driving tips at the nats

keep at it robbo, just get confident with leaving the line with some serious revs on board. Once you find the comfort spot with the right boost and pedal off the line you will be on fire and 11s day in day out will come easy.

:lmao: this coming from a hairdresser from blayney who's got 310rwkw and can only manage a 12.1 :lmao: The calais had 285rwkw and ran 12 flat.

As said above I was racing in the 1st round of the Tassie Nats and I'm not sure if you know much about DYO racing but the idea is to win :stick: the first run in cold air that day and I got eliminated so didnt have the chance to go again.

It's coming together slowly and will improve with every run out, when I get over the fact its 4 months old and its ok to flog it it will probably get faster. Now back to your 6 toed banjo playing cousins
