How hard is it to find a manual these days?!?

Searching for a specific car - and out of say 100 cars maybe a handful are Manuals.

Are manuals a dying trend??

What are you driving..... auto? or manual? and why?

poll coming!!!

I have a auto.....likely due to laziness around town

I drive a manual and love it however can be a pain in traffic. I am buying an auto at a VERY GOOD price and was thinking of a manual conversion. Autos can be good but I find them boring.

I generally alternate. Previous car was a manual, current car is an auto, the next probably a manual, and so on.

More people are becoming Lazy I guess. While Autos are getting better, they are still a while off matching a Manual for outright control. Plus Auto's are mind numbingly boooorrring. Well unless you have a large stall but even that ruins a fair amount of throttle control through the twisties. All well and good for going in a straight line though

LS1 manual. Why? because I like to drive my cars, NOT just steer them

when i left my job last year, i had to hand the company car back so i was looking around and decided on a VY clubby, went and look all over SE Melbourne and found out of the 50ish we looked at, 3 were manual.

ended up with a VE SS manual (and rather glad i did)

manual cos its fun :D

can be a pain in traffic esp with a tex and big cam, but the fun still outweighs it

i dare say when i am older and more lazy i will probably get an auto.

Isn't it just too pricy to change?

Main reason (later found to be wrong) I went auto was the previous 6spd manuals were rather clunky. But must admit the current M6 is not too bad.

Also the A6 SS-V wagon was in stock, so was just a couple of weeks wait for shipping, not 4 months.

How much would it cost to swap a A6 for a M6, and that would void the driveline warranty?

i drive a manual, at the time, i was getting over not riding bikes so wanted soemthing more involving. Also, as i don't drive to work, I wasn't concerned about it being a pain in traffic.

Lastly, I had planned to get to the track from time to time and a manual is a lot more fun!

My car is just a work mule so I couldn't be bothered sitting in stop start traffic in anything other than an auto.

It really has nothing to do with the fact that I have driven over 2 million km's in a manual and maybe sick of a clutch.

Auto here, yes they are dumb and I couldn't leave it in 'D' and be happy. :( They are very stupid.

I don't personally see the point of a clutch pedal. But that's me. :yup:
But if you manually use the gears and can read the traffic ahead, they are fine.

Performance wise, yes manuals are better, (although that's sometimes debatable too) but its good enough for me.

If you ask me, its the little cars/engines that need manuals more than these large V8's, they have more than enough torque to get you around.

Its personal choice in the end, and always a compromise, one way or the other.

Manual for me. I was wrapped getting a 5 speed VL in such great condition after most that I looked at were all Autos.

Autos are alright, but I prefer Manuals all the way. I was almost going to drive an Auto when I first got my license, but I'm so glad I took the extra time, and learned how to drive a Manual.

Plus it's great when all of your mates drive Autos, and don't know how to drive a Manual. So I don't have to worry about mates wanting to drive my car. lol

I shouldn't have to tell you this as you've done plenty of track work. But the acceleration side of things is not where a manual shines.

Those hairpin turns in the VE could of been done alot quicker with a manual.

For example we know how useless the handbrakes are in our cars but with a bit of engine augmentation you can get them to work more effectively.

For that hair pin what I would do is approach cone under brakes, flick left, clutch in 2nd selected, flick right pop clutch grab hand brake release and give half clutch when desired slip is reached. Build revs drop clutch continue oversteer slide now under power.

You simply cannot do that kind of stuff with an Auto. Sure most people will find it difficult to throw together that kind of faint slide coupled to a power slide but its doable and only in a manual.

Take another circuit racing classic example. We all know you do not use engine braking approaching corners or especially when already under lateral load to when changing gears. Thats why auto cars without rev matching are utterly useless if you want to have any hope of being in the right gear on corner exit. This is why we heal toe manuals to ensure no engine braking is taking place and we are in the right gear to get on the power straight away post apex. But come in a little to hot with the front end starting to push into understeer and an auto has no controllable options. A Manual on the other hand can augment normal braking with engine braking ever so slightly to throw more braking force rearward and hence unload alot if not all of the understeer.

If I wanted to drive another go kart I'd go to a bloody go kart track. For me I seriously prefer manuals. I previously owned a VZ SV6 A5 but that was only because the clutches in the M6's are very brittle and a lot of reviews rated the A5's a lot higher. I found that driving it "like a manual" as people put it (which is practically engine braking when going down hills etc) is ok but hard to catch your revs at the right range when cornering and such.

Having a manual gives the driver so much more control, INFINATELY more control. Can control your speed better, your rev's on corners etc, and you don't have to rely on a computer deciding when you shift for you (unless you have a car, like I did, that allows you to hold a gear for longer). I mean seriously, where's the fun in that? One of the main reasons I love the new R35 GTR's but hate the fact that they are now an automatic, they have COMPLETELY stepped away from what the car was meant to be. A pure drivers car, not a girly "I can't drive stick so my puter will do it for me" car. But that's my opinion.

The other side is, ever driven an automatic turbo? can you say bloody boring? Hard as balls to keep on rev's/boost when cornering or anything if not almost impossible. Manual is where it's at for a turbo car, I'd recommend supercharger for auto's though. But that's just my thought :)

I was going to do it with my Ve and it was going to cost around 8 to 9 grand so I didn't do it. If you buy a wreck take what you need and sell the rest that would be the most cost effective way of doing it.

Seriously, who drives like that on the road?

We are talking day to day manual vs auto. If Tre-Cool could do everything a normal manual can do with his auto, then it's good enough for 99.9% of commuters, is it not?

Who said we were talking day to day driving but if you want to go there yeah fair enough but who needs 350+HP like 99% have on the road too?

Ignoring the racing advantages a manual has. What about the enjoyment side of things. We all drive powerful cars because we want to. There is just more enjoyment in pedalling a manual and rowing through the gears than there is just pressing the go pedal and hanging on.

More control, more fun, less parasitic power loss, better economy, better throttle response. It all adds up to a better experience to me.

More control, more fun, less parasitic power loss, better economy, better throttle response.

Well....

More Control? due to being able to clunk it into a gear and leave it there? Manual drivers will certainly have only 50% HOW compared to auto drivers (HOW=Hands on Wheel)

More Fun? Would have to agree with that

Less parasitic power loss? Agree in theory, but is certainly getting better in expensivce boxes (not the Holden ones yet)

Better Economy? Better tell Holden, as their $M's of testing indicate the new A6 is more economical than the M6

Better throttle response? Is that real response, or as noticed? My throttle aren't linked to the box and I have instant response when I blip the throttle. When in gear if in manual, it's pretty much instant, but in 'Sport' or 'Normal' there can be a lag depending on how many gears it jumps down.

Been there done that before when I liven in Melbourne and it didn't really bother me. I just used to crab along with zero throttle releasing the clutch a bit to get rolling just like you have to with the brake pedal. It was no big deal. You just read the traffic.

I don't know about you but I can control the wheel just fine with one hand while I'm briefly changing gears.

You will never remove parasitic loss from an Auto. You have a torque converter and the associated hydraulics to power and that power doesn't come from no where.

Thats the A6's ridiculous diff gears helping that out. Highway the A6 will be a tiny bit better. City driving with lots of gear changes will see the M6 return better economy I suspect.

Response as in. You hit pedal, car goes. No converter lag to worry about.
Also the Holden A6's are a pretty dumb box compared to the ZF in the Fords or a high end euro car. Because of that, they can't predict what gear you need when you need it perfectly like a pedal and stick actuator (the driver) can. Taping through the gears is all well and good. But if you have to tell the auto what to do it ceases to be an auto and you may as well just have a proper manual box.

Neither actually.

They run a normal clutch and the shifter alone is what makes the box sequential. The box itself is the same as the H pattern Hollingers. Infact the Sequential shifter has been optional from Hollinger for over 10 years. Just the Supercars weren't allowed to run it till now.

To aid with shifting there is a micro in the shifter that cuts spark to briefly unload the box during a shift.

I'm not knocking manuals, they have their place when you really want to "drive" your car and have some fun. but the other 95% of the time were you cant give it a boot full the auto makes for an easier driving car and can be just as fun (atleast now with the 6speed auto). If holden hadnt of braught out the 6speed there would be no way in hell i would have 1.

Just sit back, throttle on and cruise along.

The ultimate manual car would be a sequential box with a clutch, use the clutch for take off's, skids what have you, but just smash through the gears without having to clutch in.

Perth traffic might not be as bad as all the other city's around australia, but i hate having to constantly change gears between traffic lights or stop/start or having to crawl 5 metres at a time between lights, but this still annoys me in the auto.

I drove a 4.0L 6cyl Auto for 11 years because my daily drive was about 60-70km, most of which along the freeway (I'm from Perth too) during peak hour, then around the city and surrounds visiting clients.

I still do the same job but don't have to anywhere near the kms now, so I decided to get a manual V8 SS ute (in Atomic). I drove it into Perth a couple of times last week, but NEVER again. While it is SO much fun to drive in normal conditions, sitting in peak hour traffic was pretty crap.

Plus, some wanker ashed out their cigarette on the tonneau cover when it was parked outside my work (what sort of person does that anyway...!) :flamin:

So, it's a vote for manual for me - heaps more enjoyable to drive EXCEPT in heavy traffic.

I got a manual in my ute and auto sedan. Manual can be tiresome in traffic BUT I will live with that as much more fun with a bit of spirited driving. The standard clutch feel is so light my wife now hates the auto and wants manual! Auto is good for drags [quicker changes] but by far to boring and limited control over your gear selection unless manually selecting with auto and I dont know how long the box will last as a standard item.

manuals are fun but im an auto man. WHY? Because im into drag racing and autos are faster than manuals. unless your DEE JAY or LS1TOY or PHONSY and so on. but most of the fast cars are autos. i drive a truck all day so you get sick of changing gears. its good to jump in the car select D and go.:)

Yes but no real skill in just mashing the "go" pedal is there?

Fair reason though if you drive a truck all day... you have a good excuse to be lazy!

have had autos for last 10yrs so sick of them. had a manual 99 lancer for a brief peroid before i got "auto" V8 SS VY and i gotta admit the lancer was so much more fun to drive the the SS. but traded SS and now have a SS VE ute MANUAL and im loving it so much more fun & satisfying to drive i will never go back till im too old & lazy :bravo:

Auto for me, it will beat a manual at the lights any day .

Only if a retard is driving the manual and not without a high stall it won't. A good manual driver will win everytime as you can get the RPM up and balance the torque delivery. A high stall and its torque multiplication is hard to beat off the line though. But you aint got one. So I'll take ya. :flip2:

Plus, some wanker ashed out their cigarette on the tonneau cover when it was parked outside my work (what sort of person does that anyway...!) :flamin:

Isn't Ruddy raising taxes on ciggies over there to be $20 a pack? A plan to reduce the number of people smoking, and reduce the number of kids starting?? Or is it just more revenue collecting? :diddy:

Probably the latter - to be honest I couldn't care less if people smoked or not, just don't leave your butts everywhere and don't flick them out the window when driving. And most of all, don't put the bastard thing out on the back of people's cars!

He's lucky I didn't catch him doing it...

I had a manual commodore and now an auto.....some days i really MISS the manual!!! but then most days im happy i can just push two pedals for stop and go. Manuals are good for control over the car and staying in the gears you want. Other then that i don't mind auto's

Well....

More Control? due to being able to clunk it into a gear and leave it there? Manual drivers will certainly have only 50% HOW compared to auto drivers (HOW=Hands on Wheel)

Wrong, you only have your left hand off the wheel for as long as it takes to get into gear.

More Fun? Would have to agree with that

True

Less parasitic power loss? Agree in theory, but is certainly getting better in expensivce boxes (not the Holden ones yet)

Not in theory, auto's have more parasitic loss, the loss occurs by driving fluid around and in the converter, even in the expensive boxes.

Better Economy? Better tell Holden, as their $M's of testing indicate the new A6 is more economical than the M6

Crap, this is Holden just trying to sell the Allison 6L80E.

Better throttle response? Is that real response, or as noticed? My throttle aren't linked to the box and I have instant response when I blip the throttle. When in gear if in manual, it's pretty much instant, but in 'Sport' or 'Normal' there can be a lag depending on how many gears it jumps down.

Yes that is better real response, I've had Plenty of auto's and manuals, and the manuals always have had better throttle response than auto.

If its a car with a bit of power, manual no doubt. I prefer the M6 after converting from Auto to manual because the auto kept on breaking as the 4L60E is a piece of junk as far as im concerned (slow, stupid and weak). If its something like a V6 Omega, then maybe an auto. Nothing better than feeling the torque through gear changes. :driving: Autos better in its own ways though.

Excellent

Can we just be happy we have options instead of forcing opinions onto others?

yeah if its auto (no stall) vs manual with a good driver id say 9/10 the manual will win..however i have a 4500 stall so manual drivers good or bad dont really worry me :1peek:

but i see your point macca....
