View Full Version : Another VT for Motorplex

Picked up my VT gen3 yesterday
The plans to strip it and set it up for a bit of fun at Motoplex this season
If time permits, the 402 will come out of the Monaro and go into this old girl - then Ill have to find a th400 to handle the duties - dont think the stock box will hold up to the abuse.
Good straight car 138000 km auto $6k wasnt bad I thought
Anyone with advise for stripping it down feel free to point me in the right direction

Oh great, another bloody VT getting ready to hunt me down. :)
Cant wait to see it done and running some good times.

Nice pick up mate, pitty it wasn't silver to match dans and Lewis's then you could had your own little race team, team silver !
Saw your Monaro down at SQP couple of months back very nice, it will be a shame to take the 402 out of it, but should be lots of fun in the VT down the drags !

Funny you saw that Oztrack, I thought you had pirated mine when I saw your pics last night.
402 has to come out now with the Road Nazi's everywhere - Im sure I can get by with 346ci in the Monaro instead (will still have the blue bottle though).
Does anyone know the best way to go about removing the entire immobiliser set-up from one of these cars or am I best to leave it to someone smarter than me ??
I havent done much work on cars sine the HZ era so it will take a bit for me to catch onto these new fang dangle wizardry cars lol

great work faedy  :bravo:
immobilizer probably best left for the professionals to take out.
sounds like a wise plan to run the 346 for a bit and get used the racing, car, etc then once comfy smash the 402 in and get serious! :)
a silver paint job and definitely the 3 amigos down there
cant wait till the season starts with all u guys hitting the track...looks like that season membership that the plex sent out the other week is gonna be needed to pit crew every week :lmao:

Looks like the motorplex is going to be pretty busy this season.
I thought i'd jump on the bandwagon as well, so i'm buying the ute that GM Motorsport advertised on here (http://www.ls1.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=121779). I was originally thinking about getting a cheap Vt v6 sedan as i have k-frame and plenty of parts in the shed.
But by getting another ute, i know everything will bolt straight in. Unfortunatly I dont think i will have a race-prepped vehicle to well into the season (end of the year)
Good Luck with your project Faedy and keep us updated.

WOW. Good buy there Dave.
The first race will be to see who gets their car finished first. I don't think I'm gunna win that one. :bawl: Hopefully that will be the only losing mine will do.
In all seriousness goodluck with the build Faedy. It'll be interesting to see how far we can all push these babies. I pushed mine from one side of the shed to the other last weekend.

Tre, that ute looks like a good base to start with - I would have prefered a ute, but they are nowhere as cheap to pick up as a VT eh ?
Lewis - I had to push mine to the auto eleci's as the key shit itself 2nd day I had the car.I hate pushing things that have a motor in them!!
Hopefull the Missus and kids are off the Perth for the weekend so I can have some time to hook into this old girl - just got to decide how much to strip out from the inside
I would like to keep 2 front seat as I might also run a few hillclimbs down here and go to the Collie track for some fun as well - gotta get my money's worth from it.
MMM roll cage - it seems like most cage builders are under the pump big time and it is a long wait till they are free to book in another job - out till November one told me:vpo::vpo:

Yeah, pretty low chances of picking up or finding a ute unless you get a wreck and fixup or look at spending 10-12K for a VU.

Good luck with trying to get a 4 speed auto to stay togethor for racing and hill climbs. I reakon as soon u put the 402 in it's going to be all over for the trans.

Really? have you tried John's contacts? I might have to ask the GM Vic boys if they know anyone close to them and get a quote. I want a cage done similar to Shane's so im good for 9's. just incase.:) I figure 10.7's with 1850kg's on 8" slicks. I should go alot quicker with atleast 400 less kilo's and some 10" slicks.

Been a slow process - I was full steam ahead until the start of this year, when a major coal mining company took me for a 6 figure sum, and a couple of other setbacks, so I have had my ass to the grindstone trying to make ends meet without the banks ripping me a new one.
Im taking day at a time atm to see where things go - fark I wish I was 20yrs younger as life would be shit loads easier to do this sort of thing.
Maybe I should drop back to super street for the occasional fun, and forget super sedan

Pulled the front k frame out today so I can clean it up, and give the engine bay a tidy up, and remove struts to get re-valved as 90/10"s
.
As Ive never pulled a newish car apart (only old H series ones), I just followed my nose and undid everything till it fell out (nearly on my head lol)
Is there a trick to re installing it easily?
Any other things I should replace while it is out of the car?
While Im at it I will remove the ABS (Looks easy enough), and install a line locker while Im playing around with the brakes.

we have a hoist at home here, so i just lifted the car up and then rolled the motor/k-frame underneith the car on a frame/table with wheels. lowered the car back down again, aligned the 4 k-frame bolts holes and put the bolts back in.
then onto the shocks, bolted in the top mounts. then put the 2 bolts for the shock to the hubs.
lifted car back up and put the transmission mount bolt in. (using gearbox jack to lift gb up)

Yeah, I have Howquicks old Hoist which is invaluable for this
Finished stripping front end down, and went to check front bearings and bugger me the hubs are a throw away item, so I decided to buy std front hubs, not ABS ones as Im going to throw away the ABS system - will install ARP wheel studs now as well
I will look at replacing neccessary bushes, get 90/10's, clean everything up and paint
Then I'm going to clean up and repaint engine bay as well, just to make the whole thing look tidy while I have the chance to.
Then try to re assemble it and remember where wiring and pipe work all belongs:confused::confused:
This is how the car looked when bought (I put a set of my slicks on it for pic)

Well I did paint it once front end was intact, but am not happy with it so as you can see stripped it down to do properly.
Just one of those thing I can do that costs jack while I save a bit more coin up:smilesandbanana:
Also makes it real easy to remove all ABS, and fit new suspension
I spose another plus is that I get a good understanding of how these cars go together and I get to check every nut and bolt before I fly down a drag strip at 100mph:goodjob:

Don't start welding up all the holes, is my biggest tip. I started and can't stop. Smoothe bay = Extra year to get it going. It does/will look great but it is major work and it really depends on what the car is going to be used for. It's taken a lot more time than I anticipated.
As for wiring, thats a toughy. I currently have not a wire on the car. Gunna be another big time consumer putting it all back in. I am not sure what I'm going to do yet. I'd love to completely hide it all and only put back what needs to go back but that too is going to be even more major.
So what I guess I'm suggesting is, remove the abs bracket. Clean up those holes only. Paint bay only and then put it back together with the wiring as it came. At the end of the day it is going to be a race car......I think. :goodjob:

Your thoughts are pretty similar to mine
Just gotta work out if I can easily remove the ABS wiring from the loom, and tidy the remainder wiring up as I put it back into the engine bay
I might re wrap it to make it look cleaner
Tre-Cool
25-06-2010, 11:56 AM
if you want to spend a little extra $$ why not get the loom modified to run standalone? wont make much difference if your going to run an aftermarket tacho, and well who needs a speedo in a drag car. lol
the only wiring in my engine bay is whats on the engine. there is no relay stuff or fuse box on the side. (it will be in the cab). I'll have to get a photo to show u what i mean.

Well I have spraypainted the engine bay, rebuilt the k frame, bought new 90/10's strut top bearings and bushes and it is all back inthe car now.
The ass end is in bits waiting to be re bushed and painted
I picked up my new 4.11 spooled diff from Howquick last week so that is waiting to go in once the rear end is rebuilt
I have been thinking of adding a "Winch" point to the front of the car as I plan on putting a spare 9 tonne warn winch that I havwe on the front of a car trailer to make loading nice and easy
What is everyones thoughts on welding it to the square section on the leading edge of the k frame ? see pic

Looking good Faedy. As for the tow point. I'd be trying to run it inline with a chassis rail as much as possible. I know the front bumper is positioned badly to do this but the closer to the rail the stronger it'll be. Otherwise you might need to do a bit of extra bracing on that square tube.

Yeah Dave, I been getting into trouble for being too serious, so I thought I'd try to lighten up lol
Well the pressure is on now as I have a couple of pics emailed to me yesterday.
Howquick has been busy in his engine room, and this is the result
Couldnt have picked an easier boke to work with for this project - thanks John :goodjob:

the arse end is out of the car
Can anyone give me some advise on the best bushes to fit to it - I want to rebush the entire rear end to avoid re doing anything
I thought someone would have already been down this path, and might make my job easier (yeah im a lazy prick)

I think you require specialized tools to remove some of the bushes and shit dont ya?
If so, it might be easier to tow it to a suspension mob and let them sort it out.
Somethings i prefer to just pay the bill for than cut my knuckles working over.

A couple of bushes need to be pressed in, but they are easiy enough to knock out by hand
I have a mobilbe mechanic come to work to service my work car, so I have arranged for him to press them in for me
Ordered bushes today - all nolothane, but bugger me they add up when you replace everyone of them

Ok Ive got my ass into gear again
Pulled the front screen out (rear is already out) and sprayed the roll cage, boot, and will spray interior tomorrow, then once basic trims and seat/harness/window net are re installed, interor is pretty well complete.
While screens are out, does anyone know of any lexan screens available at short notice in W.A. for a VT ??
Also, what is everyone opinion of the best place to mount the shift light ?

Faedy put the shift light as close to line of site as possible as long as its not to bright :):) you dont want to have to look away to see it:(.
Put your shift light about here. The shift light you've got has the cover for night so it wont be to bright.

You can buy sheets of it from CMP and then just cut it to size

Thanks for the replies everyone
Assasin - with the lexan, do you just cut it to size, then just screw it in - also, would there be much weight advantage going to this trouble, or should I just wack the original screens back in(although the front one is in 2 mill little pieces bugger it for breaking on me)
Shane I thought it would be easy to screw the shift light in while there was no front screen in
Also Shane did you have a hard job pressing rear studs into the GForce outer stubs?? I used ARP 7008 - pressed in, but now one is free spinning when trying to tighten wheel nut

Bloody hell Shane - there couldnt have been too much room between the shift light and screen - I just did a dummy up, and there isnt much room to play with
I might think about recessing the mount into the top of the dash while the screen is out
Just make sure it sits as high as possable, you dont want it blocked by the wheel or have to look down at it.

Faedy what studs did you use in the front hubs? 7708?
my dad has a vt roller similar to yours and the knurl on the stock studs are much larger than the rears, so we were looking to go with some mitsu evo8 studs which have a larger knurl and 12x1.5 thread pitch.
heavyduty1340

Tre
I changed the front hubs to non abs ones and had them drilled to suit studs knurling
I only changed hubs as I could tell the bearing was stuffed in one by the noise it made

Finally this pig has rolled out of the shed(hoping the rain will wash off 2 years of shed dust).
It is heading off to SQP on friday to fit up the motor and trans so it wont be long until it actually moves by itself again.
I went to push it outside last night which involved a hard right turn once off the hoist - fark forgot it had a spool in it. No way could I push it by myself. I ended lifting the arse end up on my trolley jack and pushing the car sideways.
I'll wack up a few pics once its fired up

you can still run super street if you pb is quicker than the bracket thats how we used to go run 10.5 then back it off for super street now running 9.60's and not as much fun
if you walk around the super sedan class youll see what im talking about at the western nats a new car came out running 6's and was put into super sedan

Looking good mate, will be happy to line you up in Super Street :)
You could also give sportsman a go on Fast Fridays as well !
I think you will be fine in Super Sedan, don't take it too seriously, and run your own race. There is so much to learn :)

To true Dan, theres nothing wrong with super sedan. Why spend all the money to build a 9 second car and then dumb it down by over a second.
You'll spend the first year finding every way to loose a race possible but if you race with the best it will make you a better racer in the end. :)

I spent most of last season walking around the super sedan class with a fat ass black VU SS ute in front of me being pushed around the staging lanes :)
I'm aware of the scenario you're talking about, and having a 6 second car racing with cars 2-3 seconds slower is a bit concerning but I didn't see much politics in the class, everyone seemed to be having a pretty good time from where I was watching.
This car should make for pretty fun and reliable racing, best of luck when the season rolls out!

meh, enough with the racing talk.
just go out and have fun and don't take it too seriously. won't give you any heart ache or disapointment that way.
Like any sport if you want to be really competitive you have to spend money, that's one of the reasons why we only ever go down on wednesday nights. More runs and for our own pleasure/ no pressure etc.
the last time i did a friday night racing i got 3 runs for $70 or whatever it was on top of hiring a car trailer = not worth it.

The Fast Friday series is an excellent place to start, but i agree it can be a bit pricey for the dollars spent, especially if you win Oz Efi and you only get $50 price money and a free entry to a Wednesday night.
Unfortunately Drags isn't easy, and it takes more than one go to get the hang of your race craft. Learning the tree, staging and then dialing in all takes practice, but rewards you in the end.
I have to disagree with you Dave, racing beats the hell out of running laps on a Wednesday, but each to their own !

I was hoping to get back early and rip straight to woopass wed, but no chance now - bugger holidays.
I told the Missus that she will need new tyres as well, and she asked why as the current ones have only done 5000km - my answer was - there will be a few roll-on tests on the way home to Busselton lmao!!
Just trying to work out how I can sneek an MP2300 from CAPA into the office now as well:hmmm::hmmm:
