Just a quick thread to see if there are any trail riders out there among us?

I have an '07 KTM 200 EXC and enjoy the odd squirt down the Watagans..

Would be keen to get a group together for a ride over the next few weeks.

Hey Ed,

I go riding quite a bit around the blue mtns and further west. I have a CRF450x, maybe downgrading soon to something smaller. Haven't been to Watagans before whats it like?

Nice.. I'm surprised you haven't heard of the place, it's quite popular for recreational riders and they also hold annual dirt bike rallies out there. In short, there's open fire trails, tight single track and everything in between for you to ride and all dependent on your skill level really. Used to be popular for doing a 100 - 150km round trip to Dooralong pub which was renowned for its burgers, but this place closed down several months ago. If you head to dirtbikeworld.net there'll be plenty more info on the Watagans for you to browse through..

I ride a modified Honda CRF230f 2005. I always ride the watagans as I have a property bordering the state forest. Great place to ride ever since they started logging it more:hide:

Haven't been up for while but there's some talk of going up this weekend with a mate.

Be carefull going down the old mx path as I have been pinched many times for no ins no rego even not paying road tax can cost up to 1500 for a bit of fun.

Sounds awesome, really want to go now love a good open trail.

You're right its not worth it, I have and always will only ride rego'd bikes. The freedom of having it rego'd is also great to get around for short trips and to ride in the bush close by (if any) which is why living in the blue mountains is a good advantage!

I hear ya man and that is why I only ride them on P/P which doesn't give me a lot of options. I haven't ridden either one since DBW8 in May LAST year. :bawl: A mate told me last week he has property with some mad trails so I'll hopefully get em out soon.

F#@K THE WHALES, SAVE THE 2-STROKES !!! :diddy:

I've been fortunate enough never to have been nabbed (my bike isn't registered). I know the trails just as well as the rangers if not better so theres always somewhere to go :) unless you come across the rangers on bikes then it could get harder but I wouldn't like to test that theory.

Anyone have any idea, besides not being regod, on what you can be fined for with an un-registered bike without proper road equipment e.g. indicators, speedo etc??

I work in a bike shop in VIC, most bikes with rec reg come in 4 a service & the only lights working on the bloody bike is the head light. I fail to see why these guys think that they wont be fined. The bikes must have a horn, headlight, brake light, plate light & braket.

I think you'd be surprised at the lengths they go to catching people out these days. In Orange and the Blue mountains, also Emu plains and Penrith they have the helicopters out now with the trail bike cops on the ground targetting unregistered riders and people in the wrong place. I was riding my mountain bike the other day and the chopper was chasing me haha was pretty funny when they came right down they realised it wasn't a moto.

In regards to fines, NSW from what i've heard its around $1000 for no rego + $500 for no insurance (CTP) so minimum fine is $1500. IF you're riding in crown land or another place you shouldn't be add another $500 to that.

Edit: Taken off RTA site: Driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle is also an offence attracting on the spot infringement notice fines of at least $972 ($486 for being unregistered and $486 for being uninsured). If the matter goes to court, the maximum fine is $2200 for driving unregistered and $5500 for driving uninsured.

Yeah they can get you for well over $1000 in fines if they want to and will usually get you for everything they can, i think you can even get demerit points on your licence to. I was lucky i never got done riding with no rego for years but now i got rec rego so im right, not that its completely roadworthy though. Going riding down near corryong this weekend, looking foward to it but its gonna be bloody cold.

We just sent 10 bikes in a container to Cairns to do the Cape York and back trip,a mixture of bikes ,i am taking a CRF 450 X,all the bikes have big tanks fitted,we made up rear racks for them as there is no support vehicle, all bikes are registered of course. We are all flying over 2 weeks from today and will spend 2 weeks on the trip, looking forward to it as phones dont work up there.

Also if you are riding in a area that these fines can be implied also add riding without a bike licence, riding in a manner dangerous, speeding etc so can be quite costly.

You guys need to think further north, like coffs harbour. I was up there to collect a road bike and the buys invited me out for a day in the surrounding mountains, even loaned me an XR600 with full Ballard kit and lecy leg!! What a blast, cops never go near the place and the trails/hills are incredible. you can go from coffs to amidale without using tarmac.

I been up sugerloaf and been checked for rego which i had. Didnt even know they were cops until they were next too me.
Also if you have a head on with another bike and have no rego, green slip you are up for the other persons medical bills.

For rides look up http://www.dirtbikeworld.net/ its a great site with top blokes.
