G'day all. i am looking at getting an assist handle installed on the passenger side of my VE SS Ute for something to hold onto when in passenger seat. as far as i know all VE Sedans have 4 of them. I have a few question...
1. Why don't the utes come with one or two? (seems like something that would be easy to put in)
2. Is it possible to install one?
3. Has anyone else installed one before? if so how did you/they go about installing it?
I went to the local holden dealer to see if it was possible but there was no such part available for the ute. however got a quote for a stardard ss handle for $75.00 including screws.
For those that don't know what i mean by assist handle.. see the pic below..
Cheers Greg

That's interesting.
My new Omega International has these in the rear seat but not for the Front passenger seat.
And it is 'sorely missed' by my navigator!!

Given my disabilities I wanted one of those for the driver's door on my SSV sedan to make getting in and out easier for me (my previous Commodore V8s all had them) but was told that the plate (or whatever) they affixed to wasn't even there, so it would not be a quick job to do. In the end I just got used to not having one there and worked out another way to get in and out without needing it, but now in the ute I still have a bit of a problem if ever I sit in the passenger seat as do it so rarely I still haven't worked out the best way to get out without it. Bloody nuisance!!

Man I miss the Jesus Bar in the ute too!!!
I have been known to pull the door handle off the car coming over the Burringbar Range back when it was 100km speed zone and not covered in speed cameras:)
Cheers Kim.

so wonky, ya reckon there would be no plates in the ute either? bit dissapointing if thats the case....
i would have thought that someone else might have tried to have one fitted on their ute. would i be right to assume previous models didn't have them fitted either?
cheers greg.

Don't really know, sorry. You may have to peel back the headlining to see???

I'm keen too. My missus is always complaining that there's no handle to grab. I guess I should slow down when she's in the ute with me  Never knew why they don't have one. Any ideas PD or Cookie or anyone really?

Perhaps a Holden Assembler may be able to advise if the Handle can be fitted after sales to the blank area on the Hood lining?

I wanted one for my ute and the dealer said no. That doesn't mean there isn't many skilled people out there that could do the job for you. Start checking out some metal fabricators in your area and see what they have to say.

Jeez that seems like a major job just for a grab handle! I can understand in wonkys case but definitely a mission just for those who feel safer with it there.

I agree, I wouldn't even bother. In my case I actually asked if they were fitted at the time I ordered the ute as it was important to me and the dealer said yes. It was when I took delivery and found they don't have one that I looked into it. As in Wony's case, I do have a passenger that requires one. Still it wasn't worth the bother to do any thing about it, it's just a shame Holden doesn't see fit to supply them standard with the vehicle, it is a great aid for many older passengers.

bit of an afterthought but it would have been good to get some pics of the install to compare for the ute.
I will have a look into this further for you Gary and see if it is an easy fix so it makes your life a little easier. l will be home in 2 weeks so shoot me a pm to remind me.

Thanks Tim. :goodjob: Seems to me given the relatively low labour charge from a dealer that whatever the handles mount to must already be there i.e. it would seem to be pretty much a case of screw it straight in?????? Wonder whether the ute is the same?

Basically a handle, an adaptor/spacer thingy and some screws, plus some (very accurate) hacking of the headlining being required!

So even on the ute whatever the handle screws into is already under the headlining PD?

The new Grab Handle is identical in every way to the 2 already mounted ion the rear.

I can't answer this one Wonky. The bulletin certainly makes no mention of it being suitable for any utes.

OK, thanks PD. Will maybe have to find a wrecker with a VE ute to see if whatever it screws into is already there. Has anybody with a VE ute had their headlining out?

My mate bought a 650hp first gen RX7, the first time he took me for a spin hit put it into 3rd, the thing spooled up and then just shimmied sideways and crabwalked into 4th, I gribbed the jesus bar so tight that when it corrected it ripped straight out of the door  Thats when you know you have enough power!
