Yes it's illegal. You need the centre mount brake light as well which will mean you'll need a new rear window because I believe where the centre light would shine through is blacked out, but I'm not 100% on that. As for the holes there are 2 on the left and 3 on the right side (one for the wiring). The only way to block them in with rubber grommets but these will stick out like dogs balls if your car is any colour other than black.

cheers mate,
yeah mines white so i guess black grommets would stand out a fair bit, might just leave it on probs not worth the hassle really.

I just use electrical tape to cover the holes does the job perfectly and you have to be looking to know the tape is there, fortunately got a tape to match the silver.
As for the brake light, I haven't had the third one for 2 years, not to say you won't get done, but its not that noticable

Not to sound anal but the 3rd brake light or high mount brake light is for truck drivers benefit its not just a meaningless rule.... you can get led ones you can put in your rear window off ebay etc. As with most of our cars reducing the risk of cops pulling you over can save you alot of money.

I did this to my VX. Bought a 2nd hand bootlid off a berlina for $20, had it sprayed black and put it on. No holes or tape needed. For the brake light got one from the wreckers for $5 and put it on the parcel shelf. The wiring is all there just hidden. Easiest way, looks great and is legal.

My daughter pulled the rear spoiler off her VY2 SS and just covered the holes with black tape. Being a black car that's fine but she is on the lookout for a non spoiler boot. I bought her some LED strip lights for the rear window from Gerald at www.gadgetmaster.com.au but I don't think she's put them on yet. Simple and cheap solution! :yup:

nope, not on the VY it isn't. while the VX left the wiring and even the brake light housing, it is gone on the VY.

Did this to my VYII SS recently. Removed the spoiler which is held on by 2 nuts on each side. The right side also has an extra hole where the brake light wiring goes thru. Plugged the holes up with rubber grommets. Will eventually get the holes filled in and painted up properly.
Regarding the 3rd brake light, got an LED brake light off eBay which was wired into the brake light wiring already present under the parcel shelf.

I took the spoiler off the wife's car and covered the holes with white electrical tape(cars obviously white) and you cant even see it unless you get up close to it.Over time(say a couple of months) in the sun it tends to shrink a little and go slightly yellow so I just re-apply fresh tape. Beats paying $300 a beater quoted me to weld the holes and paint the boot. :goodjob:

After much consideration I've decided to give this idea a go and see what opinions/comments on the street I get (if any).If I decide to leave it off permanently I'll get the boot holes welded and painted asap :)
