Played it for awhile, but couldnt stomach the $15 a month for the privilege. I did like it though, particularly the amount of scope that you have for building an empire in any one of a number of disciplines.

Damn, I want to play again now :/

hahaha! Been playing since 2005. Got 2 accounts actually. One for blowing people up with and the other for industrial (money making) activities.

The promotional material is largely bs.

I don't wanna turn anyone off, but EVE-o is not for the weak of bowel or light of heart. Personally I find it to be a... hmmm... perversely good experience.

Let me give you a little example. A guy pilots his freighter costing 1 billion ISK (game money) into an insecure region of space. On board the freighter is pretty much everything this guy owns, valued at let's say 3 billion ISK.

Now 4 billion ISK is nothing to sneeze at in EVE-Online. It takes a fair bit of effort to acquire that much money. Maybe 1 month solid 8hrs per day of doing quests (these are called missions in EVE).

30 seconds after jumping into the insecure star-system the freighter and all it's contents are blown up by a group of human players who style themselves as pirates. They bring their own transport ships in, scoop the loot and make a tasty profit.

The guy who lost all his stuff has lost it permanently. He can't reload a saved game and he can't pay a few gold coins (as in WoW) to have his stuff returned. It's gone; belongs to other people now.

It's a harsh game sometimes. But pretty fun if you're the one doing the shooting ;)

But there's more!

The other day my alliance (formal in-game arrangement of a large group of players) laid a nasty little trap for a guy who liked to throw his very expensive ship (100 billion ISK - not a typo) around in a reckless manner.

20 minutes after carefully moving our fleet into position so as create the perception that we didn't have many ships around, we sent a forward group into bait the guy. 5 minutes later he swallowed the bait whole. And 15 rather frantic minutes after than we'd blown up a Titan class ship and a number of smaller craft who came to his assistance. Quite a satisfying day!

When I was a newer player I got blown up a fair bit, but now that I'm with a quality alliance and have more skill-points, playing the game is very enjoyable. Takes a fair while to build all that up though.

Someone once said EVE is a slow burning experience, so if you're up for frenetic speed-freak FPS style action, EVE probably isn't for you.

Peace!

I've been playing for years - although lately I've been having a bit of a break. A break means not playing 2-4 hours a day, but rather a few hours here and there - while of course maintaining a skill queue!

I've got a couple of accounts and have had fun on fronts - from trying to dominate the markets to running a 0.0 corp; from production and research through to mission running and PvP.

There is always something to keep you interested.

A word of warning though! ::: I'm yet to find a greater time sink! You can sit down and have a little play and stand up again 8 hours later, reluctantly, because you're fleet is still involved in some long running event that will take another couple of hours!

Takes a big time commitment and sucks you in! But no greater game out there in my opinion.

Sounds rather harsh to me, I dont think Id react to well losing 8 months of work and investments in 15 minutes to never recover it(Especially if you pay a monthly fee). Might end up with a PC through the window which would cost me more lol.
I better stay away on that note!

It's not quite that bad. The examples I gave are both reasonably extreme, though dumb freighter pilots in lawless space is more common. In the examples I gave the people who lost their assets only did so because they did something really dumb. If you're not dumb then you're probably going to be fine! ;)

Most useful combat ships cost very little ISK. Losing them is not a big deal once you're settled into EVE. Some of the more exotic ships cost a hell of a lot more but don't really offer a massive benefit over the cheaper ships so it's quite possible to tool around in the cheap and effective ships and not feel out of place.

One of my characters has been a part of ENH and then Cry Havoc for quite a while now; I'm reasonably familiar with the various types of space ;) There's:

empire space (policed by non-player forces and therefore safe - if you're not carrying > 10mil in your T1 hauler),

low-sec (not safe, lawless, whatever),

and 0.0, variously refered to as null-sec, zero-zero, zero-point-zero, etc.

But people who don't play EVE don't know these things so if you start sprouting off about zomgleet zero-zero space they're gunna say "doubleyou-tee-eff". Actually they're probably thinking it already ;)

Play EVE. It's fun. And we need more Aussies. If you've got gonads and end up giving it a go, talk to "rogerano" in-game.

there are also ways to set yourself up so playing doesn't cost you REAL money. I have two players that I fund the monthly subscription with by using ISK (the Eve currency) to buy game time cards on a monthly basis.

as long as you have a decent in game ISK income stream, you can play for free! :D
