My wife had a Falcon hire car in Melbourne today and said that it's radio had a screen saying what the song was that was playing etc. I am not sure if that means it was digital or not.

No, not this new digital service.
Many cars have this display ability.

can some one clarify whats the point of digital radio?
just to transmit the name of songs or what show is on? IE hamish and andy Hughsy n kate etc?
Is the reception better. I think its a huge gimmick personally, its the friggen radio ...

Is the reception better. I think its a huge gimmick personally, its the friggen radio ...That's some of it however the main benefits are clearer reception and no interference such as from overhead power lines and tram power lines (in Melb at least). You can also have the ability to record the radio for a few minutes and play it back which is similar to Foxtel’s IQ in a way. And sound quality is meant to be almost CD like.

It costs around 90% less to transmit on digital. They will push the "clearer reception" and "song information" but it's really a farce... it costs them less :deal:

It's too late for Digital Radio...should have been implemented years ago. Pointless nowadays, people are not going to go out and buy a digital radio for home.

true plus we have the ipod's now which we can just connect into our cars , have all the songs we want no ads or talk back crap!..
ipod doesn;t have the footy on it ;)
Digital Radio is too late as noted elsewhere.
can't retrofit in most cars from the past few years as the stereo is builtin unlike older cars.

Actually it is not a gimmick digital radio. I bought a reciever for $169 a couple of weeks ago (not for my car but I am sure you can actually buy them as I have seen them advertised at Australian electrical stores like Harvey Norman). I have noticed that the reception is much better than the old analogue radios and there is no difference in quality between AM and FM bands. You also do not need to change from AM band to FM band like on analogue sets. I am yet to test all the new features but from what I have noticed so far is that the reception is at least 200% better than analogue sets.

What is interesting is, what if in the future they decide to cease analogue transmissions as they are doing with tv? Unlike tv where you just buy a digital tuner, car radios will be left unable to receive radio and because the radios are integrated there is no way to update them.

:rofl:I think it's GREAT ! DAB+ ROCKS!:goodjob:
I was the first one to call 3AW about my experience when they were still running only 10% power.
Now it's just briliant:
1) Auto Clock setup - no more worries about flat back up batteries/ power outages
2) Clear signal - on 3AW I was getting mutipath distortion.
3) Tells you information - weather / song / news update dependant on station signal.
I hope when I get to buy the Holden VOLT, GM will include a Euro / Australia DAB+ Radio in it.
Me thinks it fantatic - like the Digitial HD TV's this is the Radio version.
Eg. you can get the AM staions broadcasts in stereo and with beter than FM Quality & more choice!
Prices a pretty dear - but they will come down with time.
For those that were still $hitting in the diapers in the early 80's CD Players were Philips $2,000 units at Myers, now they build them into everthing for a couple of bucks and they are obsolete for the IPOD generation.

It's about time, AM broadcast quality is still stuck in the 1950's.

Do you mean the hosts or the signal. I'm confused.

Please tell me if I'm wrong, but with digital, if you are listening to Triple J in Wollongong, on your drive to Sydney you still get the best signal that is available no matter where you are? It doesn't tune to a frequency, but to a station? Still new at this digital thing. Please enlighten me.

I only have an alarm clock DAB+, not portable.
* If any one had the "Pure" brand highway model for the car
- please do share as I'd like to know as well.

Is DAB+ going to work out in the bush?
At the moment there are plenty of 'local' stations out there if you are driving long distance, but what is the reception range going to be like with the digital stations only being in the major cities ATM.
I think DRM Mondial Digital would have been a better setup with its long range reception in a country like Australia, and far cheaper to setup.

I have a portable digital radio which is under the brand name BUSH and I have found the reception to be excellent. The only time I have had trouble so far with reception has been in tunnels while driving. I am sure that will be rectified soon. So far I give the digital radio a 200% better than analogue after 3 weeks of testing and I am sure as time goes by it will get even better.

What's the current status with DAB+ in new cars?

I too have one at work (indoor), much clearer to listen to, you don't get any static, you just loose everthing for a few seconds here and there. Can get annoying at times.
