# L1-P1

keys2drive is an Australia-wide education program for new drivers, their
supervisors, and driving instructors working together towards the goal of
zero harm in the first six months of P plate driving. It aims to make newly
licensed driving much safer.

This item kicked off (December 15, 2004) as part of the then federal governments
plan for a "National Driver Training Scheme", which has developed to date into that
which you see 'harmonsing' around each State and Territory, as the
graduated L, P1 and P2 system, and its emphasis on the defensive driver
components!

This is an attempt to remedy some of the bad driving habits parents pass on
to their their kids. Basically, a single free lesson for ALL learner
applicants across the country, it is hoped some will then take additional
training.

This program is now running in TAS and will soon extend to other
jurisdictions.

So does this mean that the idiots running this country are finally listening to everyone who has been trying to tell them for years that better driver training is the answer, not giving people like Harold Scruby more power?

Yes, and no:-)

Study the website carfeully, this *IS* Australia's first attempt at getting ALL driver candidates to *at least* do one lesson with CERTIFIED DRIVING INSTRUCTORS, that is certified - as to 'the system'.

As said, its emphasis is on DEFENSIVE driving.

Its a start and needs to be supported by the public, heck its a FREEBIE LESSON afterall!! (Saving $30 - 70 etc).

If it is accepted, I would expect it to improve further, that is the ON-ROAD TUITION ASPECT.

Comes down to politics too, do we then force people to pay for XX hours if you follow. In my view, yes.

So, the program must be supported, or we go back to doing nothing in this regard, cept for the handbooks!

Purchase a hazard-warning triangle for your car to improve the ‘warning-time’ given to approaching traffic, at both crash scenes and vehicle breakdowns. Store it in the boot. I suggest Hella Part No. 2901 - $70, or from Auto Parts Shops, - supplier "Prokit" - Item No. RG9212 - $20. A World/Euro standard triangle device exceeding AS3790 triangle performance requirements. http://www.dpi.wa.gov.au/mediaFiles/lic_drivesafe4.pdf

Friend of mine who shall remain nameless, worked on road safety plans about 14 years back to try and reach a road toll of zero. ( impossible but good target all the same ). The findings back then were education key - driver education.

I think this stuff is and has been known for a long time - but it costs money to put more education in. Real education. And money ... well, you all know the story
