Took a few happy snaps of my SS and a mate's VZ Clubby he just bought. Decided to pull the trucks out as a back drop and play with the camera a little.

Are you guys doing backburning and clearing, prep measures for summer?
Whats the reg now with using drinking water to put out fires? We are down to 27% storage here and its not even spring.

It's difficult to get permission for hazard reduction burning these days. Greenies, animal conservationists and EPA all have their guide lines that add up to Hazard Reduction Permits being thin on the ground. We are stationed in a high residential and industrial area, so the bush that does surround us must be a priority risk before we can light it up.
Drinking water will always be used to put out fires. To establish a grey water high pressure hydrant mains system in any town would be extremely expensive. Your local fire authority needs to do hazard reduction sooner rather than later if your drinking water levels are so low. In the wake of Victoria's events earlier this year, fire authorities should be on their toes...

Didnt mean to go OT but I was wondering what the policy is, since youve enlightened the forum as to what you do, pardon the pun. You guys and the Ambos do a great job.

It sounds to me like youve got your hands tied when it comes to backburning and clearing, its just sad that it takes massive loss of life, countryside, homes, and valuable possessions to be destroyed before anything is done, too little too late, theres a special place reserved in hell for the bureaucrats I believe for not using "common sense".
Summer is round the corner, if they are not doing clearing and backburning now when its cool, they have no chance if there is a 40 plus day and high winds, its just asking for trouble, all it takes is one idiot to throw their smoko out the window and the suburbs will go up, its that dry, anything can catch fire if the conditions repeat and I doubt we will see much more rainfall.
Having been through Kinglake recently, green is starting to come back in small pockets but its a disaster, there is no sound of wildlife, no insects, birds, nada, it used to be one of my fave driving areas, but theres not much to enjoy now that it resembles scorched earth.
Its good to see some residents took it upon themselves to clear and backburn despite opposition, otherwise they wouldnt be alive to tell their story of survival.
Now back to the truck specs :D What is it capable of and what does it carry? Is it fireproof? If so, up to what temp?

LOL, we wish they were fireproof. The tanker on the right has cabin protection, which consists of a ring pipe around the top of the cabin with sprays pointed towards the windows, and also over the diesel pump that drives the pump. Heat shields roll down the inside of the windows for extra protection. Combined with breathing apparatus, this system exists to offer a last line of protection to the fire fighters on board should they get caught in a firestorm. We have blistered the paint and warped the plastic fittings and reflective tape a few times in the bush. Thank god for tax dollars... :lol:

My old boss had a 5.8 Isuzu turbo diesel from an 8 tonne tipper in his early model single cab 4WD Hilux. Landcruiser gearbox and diffs. It was a stump puller for sure...

I was hoping similar mods are done ala parliamentary vehicles with extra shielding, body modifications, fuel tank/tyre safe guards, and alternative materials and padding/glass.
ie bullet roof, bomb proof, fire proof
So its an oil burner, not much different to an LS motor :lol: All this talk of guys making big power with turbos on a petrol engine and still looking forward to someone who will shoehorn a Duramax TDI into a Commodore, 900 plus hp, 1000 plus nm from idle and 30 plus mpg city driving.

Damn - the 454 on the side was looking promising!! Nice pics - I agree the fire station/truck back drop adds interest. I love how fire trucks are nearly always immaculate. The boys at Mayfield West have a schmick Scania also seem to have other various trucks drop in which doesnt make much sense.

Thanx mate. Most stations take pride in their trucks. I know we do. If it's a wet day, it's washed and dried after every trip out the door. When you are in the eye of the public, you need to have it looking its best.
We often work with Mayfield West. Their Scania is a sight to behold at a job that needs aerial attack. Wish we could fit one in our station.

Might seem a little corny or whatever but I reckon a pic with a couple of guys suited up with a hose ready and aimed at the SS or Clubby while it's smoking the rears would be pretty cool.
