I got a surpirse when I filled up, and looked down at my trip computer and saw 950kms in the range window of my VE Calais V (Auto 3.6)
So I took it easy for a while wondering if it topped out at 990kms or whether it had another digit in the field.
Well I confirmed it did have another digit, and eventually got it to 1,070kms.

So I was wondering if anyone else has got higher than this?

Are you not risking damage to the pump if you run it 'dry' as I believe the pump must be continually immersed in fuel?

If the pump runs dry it wont be for long. The engine will stop. :)
1070km per tank. Impressive. Even better once the new SIDI motors hit the street!
Cheers.

I'm not driving for 1070kms on a tank, its how much the trip computer is telling me I'll get, if I stick to the current consumption.
The figure is produced from your average fuel consumption x the litres in your tank. More fuel in tank the better the figure will be.

Huge DTE's are common just after a fillup and reset of the trip computer.
Reason is once reset, it can only base it's calculations off the (very short) distance done since reset. If you look at the "instant" consumption whilst cruising, rather than the "average" consumption from a period of time, even V8's can often be down around 5 or 6L/100km at very light throttle.
Obviously the DTE will look pretty good off this, just as long as you don't give it a bootfull of throttle out the servo driveway or hit a run of traffic lights... :)

Thanks davo, I dont think that it goes off the trip computer?
- Say were driving crazy and had a crap Ave Fuel consumption (say 20 l/100) on your window. Then you fill up, the DTE would read 400km (guessing).
- Say then you clear you trip meter and drive REAL careful for 1-2kms your fuel consuption could be (as you rightly say) around 7 l/100. This would sky rocket your DTE reading to 1200kms or similar.
Pls correct me if I'm wrong, just wanting to understand more and my experiences dont match what you've said. I've only ever seen the DTE reading move pretty slowly, like it was reading from another ave fuel reading, which was not connected to the one on the screen (so as to aviod wild fluctuations we are discussing?).
I'm thinking that it has a consistant 'last 300kms average' calculating all the time, for the DTE function, which doesnt allow you to drive easy for 1km and make the DTE fluctuate so much??
Either way, its a good excuse to have a comp to see who csn post the highest DTE picture?!

My SV8 just averaged 8.5L from darwin to adelaide and best i got was 880km to empty

I think we got 780 in our VT Senator, stock tune LS1. Only has extractors, cats and 2 1/2" twin system.

While it's a complete load of uselessness to do it's interesting to note it can handle 4 digits since in the real world it's never going to manage that consumption - unless you had a second fuel tank plumbed in :)
Mine is far from as impressive, I think after a recent trip to Albany we filled up and it said we'd manage 750km on the next tank (2000 S1 WH) - cammed and stalled with 3.9 diff I'm lucky to get 400kms between fills (65L usually).
I imagine if I could find a service station on top of a very big hill and roll out in Drive and not need any throttle until it got it's first consumption sample I could "clock" the old Stato's trip meter and get > 1000 - unless of course it can display 4 digits too.

i was going to post a similar thread today, but along the lines of how far have u got on tank in your 6L v8.
i had been pondering for a while if i could get from my house in whyalla, to adelaide and back on one tank of fuel in ve ute. the trip is 380km each way, so 760km all up... yesterday i got the best result so far. 745km off one tank. before i filled up 70km from home. (very close to empty) however my 745km did include 55km of city driving, with a total average of 10.2l/100km sitting on 112km/h on the open road... so i think could get that magic 760km if i tried harder, because at one stage DTE was saying 850km..
how far has everyone else got on a tank from the 6L v8? further then 745km?

I did make a generalised comment.
As a rule, "most" trip computers do indeed reset to a preset DTE once reset.
HOWEVER, as soon as it reaches it's preset parameters to calculate a figure, the conditions I described can lead to your high figure. This will obviously be very close to fill time, or else you can't get the high figure!
It's not hard for computers to calculate fuel usage through injector pulse and speedo signal for instant consumption (others may explain this better than me, as I'm just going on what I have been told).

Mine doesn't reset to the same figure every time. We have only had the car a short time, but at every fill we get a slightly higher DTE figure. And then when we take off, after a couple of kms it actually goes up.

Yeah you tend to get a higher reading when your cruising along the freeway getting 7-8L/100km and then fill up straight away my car went to something like 880km+ but doing general city driving when i fill up usually 300 is the norm.

so far best I've got for a tank full was an average of 10L/100km on a trip north. mixture of freeway, highway hills etc. I have found that using the engineering mode to see instant fuel usage on the VE ss, setting cruise to 108kmh on the freeway saw readings cycling between 6.5 and 8.5 Ltrs/Hour. setting the cruise to 110km/h gave readings between 8.5 and 10.5 Ltrs/Hour. that was on a section of the Bruce highway that is pretty much flat, smooth and multi lane so didn't require too much throttle input to maintain the pace.
extrapolated out to a full tank at these usage rates.
108kmh @ 7.5L/hr(average)
assume 72 usable litres
should see us use up our 72L after 9.6hrs of constant driving @ 108km/h = 1036.8 km travelled.
110kmh @ 9.5L/hr(average)
assume 72 usable litres
should see us use up our 72L after 7.6hrs of constant driving @ 110km/h = 836 km travelled.
Obviously not really achievable to drive for 7 or 9hrs with the cruise on and not stop, slow down, overtake, piss or whatever. the big thing is the difference a few extra kph does to fuel economy.
So Dutchman, I reckon your round trip could be achieved, but you'll need to work out a suitable speed to do it.
Cheers LM.

A couple of months ago I filled up in Bendigo (normal unleaded), treated her really gently on my to Melbourne, and on approaching Melb mine showed 900km to go, plus the 120km I'd just travelled, giving me 1020km. And thats in a VE SSV manual ute (with tonneau on), so I was pretty happy with that for the big 6L. Best fuel economy reading was on the same trip, got to 8.8l/100km. I was treating it very gently that day just to see how it went.
Usually after I fill up it immediately shows 450km to go.
i got 680
my driving consists of 95% stop start short trip suburban and 5% highway driving
so its not bad !

Sorry mate thats no boat anchor average , done by my super 6 calais with mods to around 230rwhp.
It still gets close to 1000 with 300+rwhp but I believe the lean cruise was deactivated in the name of safety when it was tuned.
Drive to perth run very low 12 , drive 600km home again at an average of 9L/100km.
I will be impressed if my new Gen 3 being built gets better than 100km per tank

The trick here is to fill up and then decel down a hill for a km. It will give a huge number.

For me it was to drive 300km on average speed of 110km/h then fill up and reset the trip , it starts dropping quick then by the time I get to perth I fill up again , I reckon I could have got better than that easily but my average speed over 600km was 112km/h.

On a perfectly flat road with no wind 110kph my VE Twin Turbo could average 8.4L/100km and do a genuine 875km to its tank.
Best its done is 805km but when i filled up and cruised on a flat road at 100kph it said around 900km.

wow, you guys are getting mad economy!!!
when i fill mine up, it usually tells me i have 300 - 350km to empty... and it's pretty accurate too... in about 300kms time, i stop and fill up and squeeze about 55 litres into it...
the most i ever got out of it was 550km i think on the nullaboring road going from WA to TAS... when filling up on that trip it would often say 500 - 600km to empty but that's about as exciting as it has ever been!

Geez my car was on 24L/100km today i had the aircon on all day is this normal??most days it averges 16-18L/100 BTW this is heavy city driving dont get over 60km/h. But on the highway i get 8-9L/100km??

So fill it up as far as it will go, find a really long decent which is steep enough to maintain speed while in a low gear, so the engine is constantly in compression, reset the trip computer and wait till it has done its calculation, and there you will have your billion kms to empty. Even better if the fuel station is right at the top of that decent.
Actually just take any photo of the distance to empty and just do a photoshop job - probably easier.
