View Full Version : White/red/yellow etc walled tyres now illegal (in Vic at least) as of today!!

While I was at Chev's today a guy came in and said he'd been pulled over earlier for having whitewalls on his car. The cop was generous and only gave him notification of the new law and a warning today, but said as of tomorrow it would mean a canary! :bawl:
This applies to any tyre that has had its structural integrity affected by having rubber gouged out where the paint is applied, so if you just have whitewalls etc. just painted on you're OK.
Unless you want to be up for four new tyres it would seem from what we were told that anybody with gouged and painted white/red/yellow etc walled tyres should scrub the paint off or use tyre black over them or something. However, this is only based on what we were told and while I assume it's true, if doing that is a hassle please verify the truth of it first!

it was just a matter of time they were going to make it illegal i suppose all states will follow suit soon

It would depend on how much rubber was taken out ,to affect the structural integrity of the tyre .
Tyres are made to wear :burnout:
Sounds like another money spinner for the gov.

grinding the rubber out cannot be too safe esp at higher speeds and heavy loads.
put it around the rim edge instead maybe?

Who the hell would want white/red/purple wall tyres anyway if they can't be produced with the same quality as a normal tyre ? Is having them worth compromising safety ? If the government has designed a law to remove these tyres from the cars on the road then they must have found brands that modify them in a way that renders them unsafe. If that is the case then I would be searching for whitewalls that DO comply with the ADR's and Aust standards. I think I've got some spare liquid paper here somewhere .... :1peek:

Tread.. yes. Side walls .. no :teach:

The amount of rubber taked off the sidewalls is so small its powder..
The thing i would think is more illegal is the fact that the tyre information is scrubbed off the tyre like Size/Load rating etc.

Its a bit harsh. Realistically it does fark all as the very outside layer of rubber on the sidewalls is purely for Aesthetic reasons. I suppose there is always a chance the person who does the job might go too deep and compromise the construction of the tyre. Probable but very unlikely.
Laws state that any defects (chips or lacerations etc.) are deemed unroadworthy so i can see their point, but in reality can't see it doing any damage and have never heard of a tyre failing because of it.

Feel sorry for anyone who does it for a living - not only do you loose the income but equipment etc would be pretty much worthless - especially if all states adopt this law.
I have never got them done and probably wouldnt but it can look quite good when done tastefully.

yeah the load rating etc. on the tyre needs to be read for insurance purposes
and roadworthy purposes so it makes sense,im guessing if the numbers are still there you would be ok

The cops are taking all the fun out of owning a performance vehicle, first it was rasing the legal suspension hight now its coloured side walls soon it'll get to a stage when the only "my ride" threads you'll see on here will be stock standard cars and when they're asked "what are you going to do to it?" the reply will be "nothing, you're not allowed to anymore"

Touch wood (Gary taps on his head) I think a lot of it is to do with the way an individual drives as to whether you go "unnoticed" or not. I've driven obviously modified cars for much of the 36+ years (close to one million kms of driving) I've been licensed and in all that time I've only ever been pulled over once for a problem related to the car's setup. That was over 30 years ago because my EH had a very loud exhaust. Those of you who know my two VEs know how loud and low they are, yet even at booze buses never a problem.
Mind you, I'm never near any of the known trouble spots on a Fri/Sat night and unfortunately I can see police giving cars with white/red walls a hard time given the potential for it to be a safety issue.
venetians, where can i get them?

i was thinking that too. later having a job
and yeh, i guess if you get done for it just flip the tyres over.
the rubber that comes off the side wall is basically JUST the writing. Which i guess is the problem??
my mates old bomb caddy.. and another mates bomb falcon has white "flappers" wonder if i can get some for 19inch wheels instead of 15s.

Regardless of whether you like them or not, would get them done or wouldnt be seen dead with them, this is just ridiculous!
When it comes to tyre safety, red/white/yellow walls should be the least of the police and vicroads problem. The amount of dangerous tyres I see, is a f**king joke! And I'm not talking about rear tyres on a V8 with no tread. These are family cars with baby seats in the back and the tyres are showing wire and in some cases have even popped, side wall damage with multiply large pieces of rubber missing and cars with all 4 tyres that are so blad they look like they should be on a V8 supercar.
It wont be long before we are all driving the same stock standard cars with no way of expressing who we are or what we like!

It's allways been illegal as it is seen as structural damage they are probably just making a point about enforcing it more or just claryfying that it is seen as damage.
Some painters actually grind a reasonably deep groove in the tyre to protect the paint, others just take off the writing to give a smooth surface to paint on.
In vic it has allways been a rwc problem if the tyre had any sidewall damage

i must say this is a great thread given the amount of cars doing it at the moment... but i believe the police are in the right as far as safety is concerned. enforcing it with a fine im not a fan at all i think a warning and then if repeated offense fair enough.....
my mate works at jax tyres and he told me a car had come in to get tyres replaced because his tyres blew off the rim after he got white walls done. he got the white walls done in sydney and yes they cut a groove out and painted them. very interesting because i didnt think it was an issue till he told me this.

i thought about doing this once, but changed my mind on it.
if it does reduce the structural qualities of the tire, then i can see the point in it, but i think its more of an extra excuse to attack the car modifiers rather then going for the well and truly unroadworthy cars, like steal belts showing and bald tires.
cops need to look for the cars that are really contributing to the road tolls, not just modded cars for a quick buck. but i dont think they will, cos then the normal joe will get up in arms about it all and wont vote for the pollies and thats something they will not let happen. its all about the votes as i see it. less of us, doesnt mean they loose too many votes.
anyway, end of my rant

I can understand people wanting to get walls done cause they do look pretty good on occasion, i just couldnt do it knowing that i was potentially damaging the integrity of the tyre itself
