This is painful to watch.
The US Gov't is encouraging people to get rid of their 'less than 18mpg' vehicles with a program called 'Cash For Clunkers' (CFC).
The vehicle must have a silica, water mix poured into the crankcase and be ran until it seizes. They then give you $4500 towards a new car. (basically).

I understand the idea but what a stupid idea - run the car until it seizes??

There was a volvo on there not really that old - surely it doesnt fit the scheme?? Such a waste!! But hey thats the US

It'd be advantageous to do it to non collectible heaps of crap, but if it stated happening to genuine muscle cars that had been "let go" then it'd be a tragedy to kill cars with the potential to be rebuilt in such a manner.

So a GTO 2004 model is now officially a clunker. ( making a monaro an aussie clunker ).

But don't worry - so is a 2009 v12 Aston Martin DB9
... your brand spanking new 2010 Lamborghini Murcielago
or any model corvette ( except the 2010 ) or camaro you may have ( didn't check them all though ).

So sleep well and relaxed - if you worried about getting a few K$ for your Lambo - rest assured the US Govt will help you out if you in the US to replace it with a nice tidy Kia ... checking .. the 2010 Suv Kia's are clunkers .... ah heres one, a 2L Kia Forte.

The corvette would be worth more than $4,500 over here in parts.

What a waist of a great car.

I'd gladly pay $4500 for a Vette.
Someone should be putting these cars in containers and shipping them over.

You are looking at $5,000 or so to transport a car from the west coast of USA to east coast of Aus and them if its under 30 years old it has to be converted to RH drive another ? $20-$30,000k so not worth it.

Yeah.....I know.
Just dreaming. Lol!
Maybe a 76 or so....and keep it LHD.
20-30K for a conversion is criminal.
Maybe I should just buy a couple and keep them at a few friends places so I can enjoy them whilst I'm in the US visiting each year. :)

Money makes the world go 'round and whilst new cars are being bought, manufacturers, sellers and those whom service them are kept in work.

I dare say the 'environment' isn't limited to global warming, but incorporates the financial one as well!

cheers

For the financial reasons look at Japan, thats what they have done for years with their rego regulations.
They make you replace so many parts with new ones after the car reaches a certain age that its cheaper to buy a new car and so the cycle goes round.
The old ones get put out to pasture, eg Australia.
This is one of the reasons we get so many good quality grey imports from Japan.
The problem with this scenario as Japan is finding out recently is that they have now flooded their neighbours with all their near new old cars and they are now starting to back log and pile up in Japan with no where to go.

What about the buisness of used cars? Basically the poor wont be able to buy a car because the minimum price of a used car is 4.5grand (which is heaps over there - can see what kind of cars it could buy). And all these used cars which could have been sold by dealers are now out of the loop.

So it sounds a bit elitist to me.

As you may have noticed from my Japan example above it only works for so long before it come back to bite you.

As for the price of second hand cars, just look a t how the price of second hand cars has come down as new cars have become cheaper, good for those buying but not good for those selling.

The world economy is in a mess largely because of excessive credit, so they are encouraging people to borrow more money to buy new cars?

On those criteria, my VT is a clunker as well....

Bear in mind the owner of clunker has to buy a car - not everyone who owns a car in this price bracket can race out and go and buy a new car. I don't think the minimum price of a used car will be $4500, but with some used cars not being on the market, may be a slight rise in used car prices as supply and demand pretty much will dictate the price. I wonder what percentage of cars are being trashed, it's probably fairly small as a percentage of the number of cars in the US.

Quite right! Same old economic mistakes, loading the consumer with personal debt, and some of funds sourced from OS to pay for it all, and all compounding.
