On startup, when turning the steering wheel, there is an intermittent creeky sound. It seems to quieten down after some driving, but still there. It's not a squeaky belt & there doesn't appear to be anything wrong with the steering except for this sound. It's not particularly noisy, but I'm always aware of it. Do I have a problem? It's an '07 VE SSV with 6,500kms.

On mine, the two halves of the steering column cover sometimes come apart, which rubs on the back of the steering wheel and makes a creaky noise. Worth a look?
PS - 07 VE with 6500km? Wow...my 07 VE has 73,000!

My old VU SS used to do that exact same thing...l and I just bought a VY II Berlina which does exactly the same bloody thing...two halves of column cover split apart and makes the steering wheel noise you describe.
I can't believe they still have not fixed it in the VE, guess they don't consider it an issue.

Thanks, will check the steering cover, but the noise seems to settle after a few k's. There is no leaking or shuddering. Perhaps the ute needs a few more k's before an accurate judgement can be made.
