What's confusing though is that during the Veyron review episodes, where they were testing the Veyron top speeds, they inserted a key next to the drivers seat that dropped the suspension and retracted the rear spoiler to streamline the car more for speed.
In this clip the rear spoiler is clearly all the way up for a good part of the race indicating they didn't have the Veyron in "go fast" mode? Wonder how much difference there would be if they switched it on ....

Seems to only be about the top speed;

"The key functions only when the vehicle is at a stop, when a checklist then establishes whether the car—and its driver—are ready to enable 'top speed' mode. If all systems are go, the rear spoiler retracts, the front air diffusers shut and the ground clearance, normally 12.5 cm (4.9 in), drops to 6.5 cm (2.6 in)."

I doubt this would change much in a drag race, only when going to top speed.

Here's some interesting figures

Maintanance costs;
The service cost of the first service on a veyron is £13,645 with later services getting more expensive. Tires must be replaced every 2,500 Miles which is about 4,000 Km. the cost of tires for a veyron is £6,325 a set and can only be fitted by Bugatti. Bugatti says that labour is the bulk of the cost at £6,000 which is checking the many complex systems on the car. At every third tire change, the wheels must be replaced. If the 2 year warranty wants to be extended it will cost an extra £38,000 for 1 year and £63,000 for 2 years.

I reckon theres been a little artistic license on TGs behalf here to make it a little more of a nailbiter.
Have a look how slowly the Veyron took off. If you see other vids of the Veyron doing fulll on take offs it just launches.

^^^^agreed and the F1 looked like it slowed, so maybe there was a bit of trickery

hmmm, I'm not so sure......
good indication of the HP difference I'd say, although the Veyron did look slow at take off, it was racing a McLaren F1.
The Veyron certainly munched it at mid track and to do it so convincingly is just another reason to envy that car even more....
Cheers.

The Veyron should have trounced it :

Veyron
0–100 km/h (62 mph) 2.5 seconds
0–160 km/h (99 mph) 5.5 seconds
0–240 km/h (149 mph) 8.6 seconds
0–300 km/h (186 mph) 16.7 seconds
0–400 km/h (249 mph) 50 seconds
Quarter-mile (402 m) 10.2 seconds at 230 km/h (143 mph)

F1
0–60 mph (97 km/h): 3.2 s
0–100 mph (160 km/h): 6.3 s
0–150 mph (240 km/h): 12.8 s
0-400 m: 11.1 s at 138 mph (222 km/h)

Here is a question for you all, if you where in this stuation which one would you pick to drive, McLaren F1 or Bugatti Veyron?

McLaren F1 for I like the idea of the seat in the middle and it was the first supper car I liked.

Simple law of physics which allows the McLaren to be quicker off the line:

McLaren F1 = 1,140kg
Bugatti Veyron EB 16.4 = 1,888kg

The Bugatti has a 750kg disadvantage.

Yeah thought about the weight difference and i think Hammond even mentions it, well power to weight anyway.

The Veyron has 60% more power than the F1, better traction, better aerodynamics and better gearbox and diff technology. The fact that the manufacturers claims are worlds apart shows there was at least a little (byt probably a lot) of feathering the throttle on the Veyron. The Veyron is only down 20hp/1000kg too.

That is the beauty of Gordon Murray's design - no excess fat.

I'd love to see a F1 car (race one not the one mentioned above) VS Bugatti. Apparently they are similar 0-100...then i'd say the F1 would be faster from 100-300 then the Bugatti would real it in again...maybe?

The Bugatti would be faster past 300km/hr because the spoilers on the F1 cars creates a huge amount of drag.

When the Veyron was released the world's media ran with an anocdotal comparison between the acceleration of the two cars. The wording went something like...if the F1 went past a stationary Veyron at 125mph and the Veyron took off at the precise moment the F1 passed, the Veyron would still beat the F1 to 200Mph.

That may have been a correct when looking at the raw times. But I'd imagine that the F1 would have actually been a very long way up the road when the veyron reached 200mph. And probably doing very close to 200mph anyway, leaving a lot of road for the Veyron to eventually catch and pass.

Evo (UK) magazine did a similar comparison with the Veyron and GTR, taking into account the speed differences between the F1 and GTR and giving the Veyron a penatly by making it further back (or maybe it was a saftely thing). The GTR is reportedly doing 100mph when it is rounding the corner at the airstrip. When the Veyron (eventually) takes off it still takes quite a while to catch and pass the GTR. There's obviously quite a bit of variation in the test - different (slower) car, less speed from the GTR when the Veyron is stationary and its distance from the GTR etc . It doesn't disprove the statement about acceleration above but the two videos in this thread show the reality of actual vs theory. When I saw the TG video I was simply amazed at the acceleration of the F1.

Yeah heard that too (think it was in another EVO review?). Given acceleration stats above which back this up, methinks TG may have "tweaked" the drag to be a closer result.

its been talked about on many other forums, it looks like the Veyron was used without launch control, you watch many other videos on youtube and you will see it light up all tyres off the line.

Don't care what they did. Give me the McLaren any day. It actually has to be driven.
