Looking to do a few hill climb type events etc and more and more with these sorts of things need your fire extinguisher to be mounted in car in reach.

Done a search and seen how people have mounted the fire extinguisher and i like the idea of it being mounted under the drivers seat and mounted onto the seat adjuster bar (i have manual seats).

A couple of questions:-

1/ What size fire extinguisher can you fit under the seat ? I note the unit in the boot of my VZ Clubby is a 1kg unit. Guys i talk to who do a fair bit of motorsport say a 1kg unit is almost a waste of time if you really have a oil fire or similar. Thinking i might get a 2kg unit.

2/ I believe from other threads that after 3 years the unit needs testing and another tag for it to pass CAMS inspection. People tell me just go and buy a new unit and dont worry about having it tested. My question is what do i need to do to get it tested ? I tried a webpage link to nsw fire brigades but it didn't load.

I have never ever used a fire extinguisher. Am sure they are just 'point and shoot' but thought, if i get a new one, i might discharge the other out of date one just to get an idea of what it is like. Any thoughts ?

I might as well get CHE to fit the extinguisher up when i get my car serviced next time.

cheers
Dave

Go have a look on this page - http://www.bigsafety.com.au/category89_1.htm

Fire Extinguisher ABE 2kg

A Chemical one is the best for cars, the best place to mount it is on the trans tunnel on the passenger side, you may need to strengthen the mount and add plate or two on the underside of the car so it doesnt rip the mounts out the tunnel.

Ring you local Fire Station, they should be able to show you the correct method for usage.

Also the biggest thing you need to know is you need to be able to get that thing out of the car blindfolded in a reasonably quick time frame, its worth practicing.

You dont want to be fumbling around under your seat trying to get it out if something bad were to happen, quick access is everything.

You can refill them but its nearly as cheap just to buy a whole new unit.

I just bought 12 x 1kg ABE type extinguisers for our work cars @ $25 a pop. They are pretty cheap so I'd just buy new VS refilling. According to the manufacturer they advise/recommend it be mounted within arms length of the driver.
