just wondering about powder coating or painting my R8 rims, can anyone help me out here as I have PM'ed someone on here who had it done but had no reply from them as yet.
I know it's possible just need some advise as some say it can flake off if not done properly

It's stronger than paint, won't chip easily and won't flake, just make sure they do it properly. Wheels will usually need to be blasted unless they're pretty much brand new. I've had 2 sets done with no dramas. One set in gloss white, the other textured matte black.

no problems with mine either, and are so easy to clean, just make sure you get the sand blasted first

Nope - better off 2pack on them. Have spoke to heaps of powdercoat shops and they don't recommend it.
You will get a chip (from stone's etc) and then you cant touch them up.
Anyway.. this is the route I will be taking.

That's what I'm doing as well.

Got a quote yesterday,$100 a rim for 2 pack black with a clear coat.
That's to do the WHOLE wheel,or it was $80 to do just the face.

I bought a new set of 19" wheels last week, took them straight to the powder coater to get coated in matt black. He didn't sand blast them as they were new. He did a chemical strip of the paint. Just gotta prep and coat them. Will be picking them up this week.

i got a new set, straight to the painter, not sure what they did exactly, but they did have to get rid of the crome. had them painted in gloss jet black, bloody easy to clean, look sweet as. a great choice and make my ride look very dark and sinister as the rest of the car is black aswell

Can anyone recommend a good powder coater in Perth??!

My work has a paint shop , industrial switchboards is what they do 99% of the time .
They tend to send aluminium jobs out to be treated before powder coating , they come back with a gold coloured finish and from what i understand it's to help the coating adhere .

Not sure if they do outside work but will ask on Monday .
They are in Myaree .

2-pak chips 10x easier than powdercoat does. As to the "can't touch them up" comment, of course you can, obviously not with powdercoat, but there is no difference in touching them up with the matching paint colour as it would be touching up 2-pak'd rims.

I reckon matt is better than gloss. Gloss make the tyres look really dull, even with tyre shine

if not powdercoating 2pak'ing then maybe stickers?? bit more expensive.
but if you have got some skill and patience you could prob do it yourself.

and if you touch a gutter or scuff a rim.. you can just put a new sticker section on
if you get sick of the colour.. you can return it to the orginal colour

just an alternative.

Just had my motorbike rims sand blasted and powdercoated for $50 a wheel. They look great and it's pretty durable. I had to take some of it back off where the brake discs bolt on and it took some effort.

cept. it can bee too much black, you need silver/chrome nuts, and silver center cap. looks better.

Hey, you will be looking at roughly $120 a wheel to paint them black for the
not damaged ones, and $170 for the damaged ones.
Thank You, Alex
$170 for the damaged ones!!! It's light rash about 10mm long on two of the wheels ffs.

Exactly!^

Gloss black is really shiny and glossy.
Matte black is good but it's pretty dull.

Satin black is the nice balance between the two - it's not as shiny as gloss and it's not as dull as black.

Which is why I reckon I'd go for Satin.

I have power coated rims on my daily and never had a chip, in fact not a single mark. They are the best wearing rims I've had and because they have lasted so well I have just brought another set for one of my other cars and had them power coated as well. As far as I'm concerned it's the way to go, tough as.

I work as a sandblaster at a Powder Coating plant, and i've sandblasted heaps of rims, normally getting painted white or black. Powder coating is thicker than normal paint, thus wears very well. It doesn't flake or chip away. I haven't seen too many rims years after they've been coated but there is growing demand for it with zero complaints so i assume they're wearing well. If you want a high gloss black, i'd say go for a 2pack black or a black base with gloss layer on top. If you want a satin or matte black go powder coating, as the appearance of satin and matte looks stunning imo. I'm not sure about costs, but to sandblast and powder coat wheels its normally 200 odd for all 4, so it's not too bad on the pocket. Just my 2c being in the industry.

The only thing I find with matte powdercoated stuff is the 'dull' look
and I reckon the wheels loose some of their 'look' so to speak. i.e the
wheel looks the same flat colour no matter what angle you look at it.
When light shines on it, it's the same dull look.. making the wheel
look one dimensional.. lol not sure if I explained this right but anwyay. It's
Certainly a cheaper option, but also the cheapest look perhaps. :1peek:

well, i usually paint my wheels with good old urethane wheel paint from auto1... ive done it a few times on my different cars, but i think my vette wheels came out best (i took the most time on these) im pretty sure matt, maybe gloss black is availible also.
they have been done for over three years, no chips, scrapes or anything, so its very durable.... quick tip though, do not clear coat if using gloss.... although i havnt done it myself, ive seen terrible cracking/yellowish clear coat after an amount of time on some peoples.:)

acutlly.. thatsa good point. you paint stockos with a can of paint, why not alloys?? well, im sure with a proper air paint gunner you are more likely to get every spot, and an even coat.
gues i just answered my own question.

I had my SSVs powdercoated satin black today. They turned out exactly like I was hoping. I only just finished fitting the wheels back on the car so the pics aren't that great, sorry about the poor quality. I'll get some more tomorrow of the full car in daylight. I just need to get hold of some black wheel nut covers now.

Not 100% sure what's next for it. I'm sussing out a Harrop blower ATM which I think would compliment what I've done so far. But a quieter cat-back is on the cards for sure. I heard a Sureflo single 3.5" 'quiet' today so that's what I reckon I'll put on.

Cheers mate. I just went to Autobarn and bought 2 pairs of short stands, cost about $100 all up. I guess if I ever need to get the wheels off again or keep the car off the ground for something they'll come in handy.

G'day Rob, thanks for the comment. I live up near Shepparton so it's probably a bit too far for you! I paid $60 per rim. I think Mohit had his done by a place called ColourUrMags or something like that. They're down your way I think.

I had mine stripped undercoated and done in 2k for $175.00 in HSV SHADOW CHROME...... Many advantages with 2k over powder coat one being powder coat will always look plastic like unlike 2k in either gloss or satin...... Also once powdercoat scratches it scratched, 2k will polish back to new.....

Just as a guide the Highett guy charged me $90 a rim (stripped, cleaned, undercoated, powdercoated, baked). My rims were brand new. If yours are damaged he will fix them first for extra cost based on the damage.

found a place in clontaf, had a chat to them and they seem bloody good. they have a guy that does the sand blasting just down the street and he sounds bloody good too. the place is called Infinity Powdercoat. and they are pretty cheap, $40 a wheel for powdercoating and $30 a wheel for sand blasting.

I havent got them done yet, but will be doing it this week, just waiting on spare wheels to fit over my brakes. will post up pics.

Just to dredge this old thread up. Been looking at getting this done (maybe) and the one place I've checked so far wants $550+ for the 4 wheels and 14 days turn around for powdercoating!

If that's the going rate (doesn't seem to be based on here) then I'll just pass. I'd rather buy an OTR or something for that dosh!

How do you guys go about getting the tires off the rims etc? Car on stands, wheel shop to de-tire them, drop off to powder coaters, then the reverse once you got them back?

That's what I did when I had mine powdercoated. Best part was I told them I needed the car off the road for the least time possible so they had them done by the end of the same day. I was pretty chuffed to say the least! I had them done at a local powdercoaters and it only cost me $240 for all 4.

Nah Wonk, they're the biggest mob in the Goulburn Valley and flat chat all the time. We use them for work and they're very efficient blokes. They don't normally do small jobs like wheels but one of the guys there loves his Commodores and told the boss he'd like the job. It was a win for me I guess.
