After getting 81k out of my stocker I had a Tex X grip installed. After 40k with the Tex it gave up the ghost. I thought I may have gotten a few more miles out of the Tex after geting a pretty good run out of the stocker. The Tex performance was ok and the only real issue was a bit of shudder on occasions. I know some ppl don't get shudder but I guess I was one of the unlucky ones. Even with a few 2nd gear hard launches the shudder remained. The car was getting really hard to shift into gear and the pedal was getting heavier. A trip across town to Chevs and out it came. This is what it looked like after 40k and two drag visits.

I went with Chev's recommendation and got a Mal Wood option 3 clutch. They replaced the slave cylinder, spigot bearing and also fitted a remote bleeder.
The new clutch is lighter than the tex and with no shudder. The gears are sliding in much smoother and easier. The new clutch has made the car a heap more pleasureable to drive. I would not hesitate to recomend Chevs or this clutch anyone.

Gary does a good job down there:goodjob:
It will be interesting to see how this one stacks up against the tex.
A review in a few months will be eagerly anticipated, once a few K`s have been clocked up.

Nice choice there JB. The flywheel and clutch plate look like they've seen some spirited driving, that's for sure. Did you look at getting the X rebuilt?
cheers

No I didn't look at getting it re-built. Alot of ppl have said how good the Ace clutch was, so rather than the re-build I opted for a new setup. The shudder was getting to me. There wasn't really that much spirited driving. I think the worse area hot spots are from a couple of hard 2nd gear launches to try and get rid of the shuddering. It will be interesting to see how the new one goes and if I get a bit longer life out of it.

Nice little write mate and these Mal Wood clutches (as does Chev) sure do rate amongst a few punters here :)
I can't remember how many ks I got out of Z but it lasted just on two years so yeah not too bad I suppose.I opted to get mine re-built and picked the car up today and man what a bloody difference in pedal feel......so much easier that now the Possum will drive it gain!
Anyway good to see your on the road and enjoying your ride once again :)
Cheers,

I did the same thing to 2 X-grips. Flywheel will likely be warped if you throw a straightedge over it, and the clucth disc will be all wavey.
Thats why gear changes become difficult, there is no longer sufficient travel in the slave to pull them apart fully.
They simply aren't designed for the punishment a Z-grip is, and 2nd gear clutch slips don't do them any good at all imho.
They certainly have a place (more stock feeling than a Z), but should not be confused with the much more robust Z-grip, when giveing due consideration to the intended (ab)use.
No problems after swapping to a Z plate and Textralia were extremely obliging with sorting me out. :)
Found the feel of the Z to be more to my (and my missus) liking anyway.
Your flywheel and pressure plate are probably still fine to reuse with a new clutch plate, I wouldn't just bin them.

Wow JB that clutch looks shagged well and truely..Sure it was installed the right way????? Geez My Extreme has lasted me well over 60 K's and still going with no issues. 40k's out of what considered a performance clutch to me is pretty shit really.

seen performance clutches die at 8,000km
the length of km isnt really published nor is given as a measure
u would be surprised how many get a performance clutch and think they need to slip it hard from the take off and slip it during changing gears...guess the good throttle off, clutch in, clutch off, throttle on technique is erased as they now have a "performance" clutch
i had mine replaced with a 3+ of some sort no idea as i let John @ SQP (HOWQUICK) put in same one as last time (think its a ACE/MALWOOD 3+). stock one lasted till 22,000km as thats when the cam went in and slipped to redline from 4000rpm as u know coz we were doing GOR in ur car when i got the call
and the 3+ went for 45,000+km and probably had a little more in it but the squealing and shuddering with a heavy pedal eventually gave me the shits
the flywheel that came out had ZERO hotspots and the clutch plate had even wear all the way around nicely.
the new 3+ with a new slave, etc is going great after 500km on it so far...light stock pedal feel, gears slot in nicely
good to hear ur happy with the ACE 3 JB :goodjob:

Fair point mate...however I know how JB drives and its nothing like how I do and mine has lasted very well. You know first hand how I roll..:smilesandbanana:

Thats a shame dude, any reson you opted not to go a Z grip? Mines seen a full year of 280rwkw spirited driving and 60+ passes on ET's at WSID

I had shudder in my Zgrip for about 100km's that's it, i think people dramatize the shudder a fair bit ;)
Back OT
Hows the mal going? A was tossing up between the 2 when i bought my clutch, keep us posted on how she goes eh?

Hey JB what do you mean by it gave up the ghost. What exactly happened Its hard for me to tell in the Pics but that flywheel certianly aint bad (seen alot worse than that) and the clutch plate looks to still have meat on the pads.

looks like it has gotten hot and the springs on the pressure plate have gotten weak and maybe let it start to slip?
thats what happened with my xtreme clutch anyway,
i have a mal wood opt 3 but havent driven it yet so i look forwad to your findings,

I expected it to give me a few more than 40k.

Sorry didn't go to the UT driving school. :flipoff: I give it a bit of stick occasionally.

I didn't get a re-build done becuase I was never really happy with the shudder the tex gave me and thought 4ok out of the last one wasn't really I expected as I thought the tex would have been stronger and coped better than it actually did.

The car was getting harder and harder to get into gear. You could have the pedal all the way to the floor and put it gear and the car would rock forward like the gear was engaged and the clutch released. It was slipping a bit as well.
