Hi guys,

I've been a regular visitor but i only just joined the forum and this is my first post. As the title says i'm after some feedback (good or bad) off anyone that has used Sam's Performance recently. I have a VE SSV and i want a cam that is nice to drive but has plenty of go and i'm looking at putting some extractors and cats on at the same time but leaving the cat back standard for now. After reading alot on here i'm considering a comp cam of 224/230 @112LSA. Does he have custom cams and has he done any exhaust testing as i read he did years ago? I'm after as much feedback as possible and want the good and bad please. It's hard to ring performance shops and be taken seriously or not have them try to con you when you're a young female so i would rather peoples feedback and not just tell me to ring him.

first bit of advise. sams would have to be one of the best performance shops around.
second bit of advise, dont bother wasting your money piutting a cam in and headers and cats only to bolt it all back up the the factory cat back exhaust

Hi Nikki, Sam is a top bloke, easy to talk to and happy to give advice.

He is a no bullshit guy who knows his stuff and I don't think you go wrong if you paid his shop a visit.

Ok, i didn't really think it would be a problem with the standard cat back as from what i have read on here a few times there is not much restriction in it.

Thanks Mika,

What is a Howard cam? Is that a brand like comp cams or something? What size cam was it? What kind of $$$ was the package worth?

Hi there Nikki

Sam recently upgraded my Tourer and Senator...........and both are incredible.
I just got back from a 380km drive tonight from Sydney to Nowra then to Bowral via Fitzroy Falls......just so I could test out the new performance.
A mixture of freeway and country roads.......with 2 great big mountain passes to cross over.....switchbacks and all. Yippee !!

So my best advice is to just go see Sam or give him a call......his advice is worth listening to......and you will be happy.

Cheers

If i get enough feedback in regards to what i want to do i will definately be seeing him but i'd rather hear from the customers as to wheather they are happy. The main reason i'm looking to choose Sam's is that he doesn't get on forums like this and boast about what he can do and how good everything he does is, and i think that is a good thing so hopefully i hear more from you guys that have had cams etc..done recently.

Thanks so much to everyone who has helped me so far.

Sam actually doesnt, but there are some associated with his shop that do, if your looking for one of the best places in sydney then stop at Sams, PERIOD........

cheers paul

Nikki welcome to the forum.

What are you aiming to achieve with the mods? For example degree of power level increase, exhaust sound etc?

Working with someone like Sam who does more "engine" dyno testing than probably any shop on LS's has its merits as he has generally tested many combinations and can recommend one based on your objectives and budget.

And the answer may be a little different based on whether you have a manual or an auto.

Cheers.

Haven't you already had enough feedback....in reading this, there has not been one negative thing said and all have been very positive!

Sam does not get involved in all the bullsh!t that takes place on here between workshops and the "who is better" argument. When you ask him why not, he will tell you that he is always very busy and hates getting involved with people who have no idea what there on about. I am also sure that if Sam ever graced this site with his presence...his knowledge could certainly put a few (or alot) in their place and if it weren't for the fact that he is a sponsor and one of the best shops in NSW...he would probably earn himself a holiday.

Now for feedback....I have had some of my past cars tuned and worked on by Sam and his team and will go no where else. Talk to him and tell him what you have in mind and what you want to achieve....he will then tell you what not to waste your money on and what to do instead of something else. Definitely a 'no bullsh!t' guy. My thoughts? Well, in one word.........EXCELLENT!!

Hi,

I did hear that sam was testing some headers about a month ago and that it should be done by now but i have not heard anymore about it. I'm not sure about his cam testing, hopefully someone else might know. I got my VZ tuned there and 3.9 diff gears and found him good and never had a problem with anything. What you want to do sounds exactly like what i'm after so i'll be watching this and hopefully you get some more feedback but i doubt if anyone that has had a bad experience will post it up.

Sam did the cam 23x/23x install on my VE Clubby, heads ported with springs, valves, stud kit, all the usual items and tune. He also did the tune for my SSV Ute, full exhaust and OTRCAI. I couldn’t be happier, both perform well and the workmanship/finish is perfect. I will say it, speak to him, tell him what you’d like to achieve. He may not respond with what you want to hear but that because he’s got no time for the BS. He does it right the first time.

I have been going to Sam's since 2003 and have always been impressed by what he has done to my Clubby. Last week my ETP 215 heads went on and wow is all I can say:goodjob: I was blown away at how responsive the car now is, just as Sam said it would be:bow:

I would't recommend going anywhere else in Sydney for an LS1 that's for sure.

Niki there are plenty of satisfied customers who have used Sams as there are lots of happy customers from the other forum sponsors as well. Have a visit to any of their shops and they are all full of cars getting work done on them. What you want done is a fairly straight forward thing for any of the sponsors to do and is the bread and butter for most of them. It's what they all do every day .

I would suggest you get the exhaust sorted first then get the cam done. I saw a set of extractors being fitted to a std catback on a VE only last week which I was curious about for a number of reasons.

The cam swap should cost you around $3,000 parts and tune included.

cheers
