Just after some advice on a bad vibration I am getting in my VY SS ute. I have had the wheels balanced and wheel alignment done and all is good there. Upto about 90 kph it is nice and smooth but at 90kph a vibration starts through the car and by 110kph the car is shaking very badly. Just wanting to know if anyone else has had this issue and what was the problem. I am thinking probably the tail shaft but was wanting to here your opinions.

I have shuddering and funny sounds in my VZ Thunder... Check out the post common probs in VZ's, and you might get some ideas from that...

Max, I'm assuming the place that balanced your wheels checked for tyre imperfections ? eg high spots in the tread and buckles in the wheels ? If so then yes I'd be looking at tailshaft or driveshafts next. Is the vibration coming from the front or rear ?

Its not the tyres it did it with the old tyres and with the new tyres I just had fitted.

Ok, well if you can rule out the rims as well I'd be looking at the driveline Can you pinpoint a section of the car that it's coming from perhaps ?

Its definately not wheels and tyres. The vibration is not coming through the steering wheel but you can feel it through the floor of the car, and it shakes the whole car. I think i'll take it somewhere to get the tail shaft checked.

mate I have the same thing in my 05 Grange and was asking the same question on the forum last week. Let me know if you find and answer. I am thinking my problem is cheap rear tyres.

mmm I had on a FORD once like that .....

Just a suggestion to check off:
ALL 4 BRAKE DISCS were badly out of balance on a new car - only discovered after different wheel / tyres and many wheel balances later at my own expence which achieved zip.

Similar issue where shaking steering wheel vibration would vary from 90-112km/h
At a much highter illeagal speed it would smooth out!

PS your wheels are weight balanced on both sides - not just one I hope ?
(I've always had much better balances with both sides balanced to prevent shimmy, HOWEVER on some alloy wheels it's only possible to balance them from the inside & they look better - but the shimmy is always a lot worse even though the tyre place says it should not be) :eyes:

check your brake rotors and make sure there not warped?
also check the gearbox and engine mounts, if there broken the gearbox could be out of alignment and causeing the vibrations

and like everyone elese has send tailshaft, dounts, cv shafts.

I have had the ute on a hoist today and it appears there maybe a little play in the inner CV joints. Think I will replace CV joints and get tail shaft balanced and see how I go.

Has anybody had cv joints replaced and what was the cost.

I had a similar problem on my recently aquired '02 VX II Calais. Had the wheels balanced day before I drove from Sydney to Brisbane, but still had the vibes. When I got to Brisbane I got the wheels balanced again (same tyre company). The dude in Brisbane said my wheels (non standard 18" Speedy Victory's) needed a locating ring. After the rebalance the vibration was still there (but better than the first job). The rings were ordered (from Speedy) and when fitted have been fine since. So I am wondering are your wheels standard or aftermarket. To the credit of the tyre company (Bob Jane) I didn't get charged for rebalancing, only the actual cost of the rings themselves, and they were less than $30 for the set of four.

When I had the new tyres fitted I also put on the locating rings. Made no difference.
