Just a video i put together of the "washer mod" last week.
I put two washers between the flanges, on bottom bolts only near the rear mufflers.
Its a popular mod in the US. I thought I'll give it a try. It sounded great but the drone was a little to much for me so i removed the washers. I did love the noise it made though!
My car also had the pacemaker 1 3/4 4-1s and the 100cpi ballistic cats in for all of the footage on the video.
What you you fellas think?

Doesn't sound bad at all. Shame about the drone.
Do all VE dashs look like that? It needs white needles like the VYs to break up the colour!
Knawful

2.5" cat back will sound similar, have less drone, and be legal. :)

yeah not sure. I think most ve's have the red dash. It is a bit much but looks good.

Yeah true. But for $1 and 10 minutes its worth a try ey? I didn't even have to jack the car up. Since then I've removed the washers because it was a bit loud and droned a bit around 2000 rpm.

How does one do this? a guide?
basically by adding 1 or 2 washers between the flange that bolts the rear mufflers on. It basically creates an exhaust leak. Lots of people in the US do it to their G8 GTs (VE SSs here).
g8board.com or youtube should have lots of clips

Drone is a booming noise inside the cabin..
You get it a particular RPM range with some after market exhausts. Usually around 1800-2200 rpm..
The VE's are particulary bad for it.. A good design after market exhaust is a must for these... Else - Dreaded Drone..

Here's a new video i put together of the "washer mod". I was bored yesterday so i put the washer's back in. I'll probably take them out again soon.
Got some drive by footage this time. Sounds better driving past then just free reving. I gave it a bit of curry in this time too.

Hmm thats why i only did the bottom bolts but theres many blokes in the US have been running washers on top and bottom bolts for months and have no issues with the fuel tank of emissions!
I dont get any smell in the car, even when stopped.
And some people cant afford cat backs. So they can give this a go while saving up for a proper cat back like manta, F1, or KPM instead of the restrictive X-force or perry 2.5" or and a drony X-force 3".
Like i said before i'll probably change it back in a week again.

One question tho what is this......
pacemaker 1 3/4 4-1s and the 100cpi ballistic cats?
LOL.. If you can't afford a proper exhaust maybe the V8 modding game isn't for you. Sell it and go back to modding a 4cylinder Ricer or something cheaper.

Got any close up photos of this mod? When I changed the Lumina system over to the dual/quad Clubsport one, I did the obligatory free rev with no rears that we all love to do and the six has quite a nice note. May give this one a try.
Btw, shouldn't be an issue with the fuel tank as it is a saddle tank under the rear seat, not a droppy like they used to be.

Lol mate.. i cant afford a proper exhaust? I have 1 3/4" 4-1 pacemakers with 100cpi cats fitted to a stock catback and Tein coilovers.
I actually want it quite 90% of the time. So for fun i chucked in the washers for a couple weekends.
I've just got my sefl ziggy's OTR for it last week. Now i've got it booked in for a maffless tune this Friday at Active Automotives.
I'm 23 and dont owe anything on the car and have land so i'm doing okay.
Well that's cool but I still don't understand why you'd wanna do that to your zorst if it's already that good. Sounds like something V6 boys would do to get a bit more loudness from there 6's.

agreed, im still paying off my LS1, and saving my pretty pennies for all the mods I want to do. Untill such time as I can afford a Sureflow stainless 3.5 in cat back system, this mod might be just the ticket.

I reckon that's a real dumb idea, yeah it sounds ok, but drone as high as 2000rpm will drive you nuts eventually. Probably within a week.
Also, and more importantly, it will produce extra heat/gasses under the car. That's near the fuel tank too. :hmmm: Very stupid I reckon.
Don't do it.

I dont have any car at the moment, i was rear ended in my SV6 a few months ago and it was written off. Im in the process of getting it replaced, possibly with an SS from the insurance company.
However that has nothing to do with this, i personally wouldnt do it and i had a Walky cat-back on my previous car.

I did it for fun mate. I had a spare 10 minutes one day so i decided to give it ago, after seeing some videos of blokes doing it to their pontiac G8's in America.
I've taken it washers out again. So its back to normal.
I don't want it loud so i dont need a cat back. Plus if i upgraded the cat back to a 2.5" (which is quietish) i'd only gain max 15hp. For $800+ for 15 hp is'nt worth it at this stage.
The cat back i wouldn't mind eventually is a KPM or F1 but for $2000+ for 15hp isn't really worth it unless you were Bill Gates.
I'd get pulled over every day for excessive noise if i had a cat back, at the pace i punt around town.
Just say its my "loud car fix" for a few months. Then I'd probably do it again. ;)
I think it sounds better then some cat backs especially the Xforce varex exhaust on half shut or shut. That sounds like a leaky exhaust!

well i thought id give this mod a try, seeing its so simple to do,im saving up for a exhaust and tune atm,so thought this might give me a short term fix,
really easy to do didnt even have to jack the car up,im not worried about the exhaust leak ,its at the back of the rear tyres ,no where near the fuel tank, first off i left the gasket in ,loosened off the top bolts and put one washer on the bottom, sounded great ,you couldnt even tell it was coming under the car, still had plenty coming out the pipes.still not quite loud enough for me ,so i removed the gasket all together and put 2 spring washers on the bottom ,this now sounds tuff, you still wouldnt pick it as an exhaust leak, seriously sounds like a sports system, this is on my ss ute, might be a bit drony in a sedan, all i can say is try it ,it costs nothing takes 5 minutes to do,and soungs great ,seriously doesnt sound like a leak;and by putting the washers on the bottom only its forcing the exhaust towards the ground, just my 2 cents:soap:

How many catbacks cost 2k sound sh1t and drone ? so what if his fun little cheep mod came from isle 13 at bunnings we have all done something like that. I remember my first decent maf pipe coming off the ryobi leaf blower I got for xmas but due to heaps of heat soak i ended up sealing the pod from the engine bay with a plastic waste bin nicely cut and shaped...this saw me run 12's with a crap tune and home made intake.

nothing wrong with ghetto car mods

haha this reminds me of the time we copied the KFC Zinger ad and made a cardboard bodykit for my mates VL, drove down the street and round the corner and got pulled over by the cops and told to take it all off.

I went down to Ghetto town for Bathurst weekend....took out the gasket and fitted one 12mm flat washer on the bottom bolt on each side....after reading all the varied replies and results on this and the G8 forums, I just had to give it a try for $hits and Giggles.
this is on a Ute so no issues with gasses entering cabin from way back there. the 12mm flat Gal washers are a bit too thin so it has slight "fartyness" at idle, but has a nice mild improvement to general tone. sounds ok to me under light and heavy throttle, some very minor pops and crackles on decel. I only did a quick loop around town and a lash up the highway on Saturday morning before The missus took the keys and buggered off to the Goldy for the weekend. She reported that it sounded no different to standard on the highway but nice improvement that she finds agreeable if not loud enough for her tastes. so I might have to whack a few more washers in for more $hits and Giggles and see how bad she likes the noise and how much drone she can handle.
Before the anti-washer brigade climb aboard the soap box, I should add this will be a temporary arrangement. Think of it as allowing me to test the noise levels of various alternative exhaust systems while having no more than a few washers invested. Sure there are plenty of sound files on the web but they are no substitute for hearing it and living with it yourself. If I find we like it loud and drone is a non issue, then I can choose the appropriate system that will satisfy those requirements and be happy in the knowledge I didn't waste time and money trying out all sorts of different systems. I have the extra issue of making sure the system we end up with wont be annoying for long trips towing....we do a lot of that....not many sound files of that available.
Cheers LM.

Nidz, I see you used stainless washers. Maybe try galvanised? Might do the trick. I hear they have a great 'spin' cycle too. And at the moment you can get washers on 12 months interest free!

Good to see people having fun with mods!
Fair enough to those that think it's unsafe - but boys will be boys - though to those who dont know where the fuel tank is, well that says a lot and brings me to my next point....
Nice to see people getting their hands dirty rather than just sending there car off to the machanic for everything like a woman with a hair appointment!

Because is irks so many people...and that makes it fun.
using 12mm split lock washers is good but if you use flat washers, put them in cold and don't torque them up too tight then you can add a nice "ringa ding ding" rattle to the pops and crackles:goodjob:
