Gday guys,

im currently looking to get rid of the spoiler on my Tiger VT SS. I have found a blue VX bootlid that i want to respray. ive got a few quotes of $400 just to spray the boot in my colour. but one of the guys wants to blend in the rear quater panels aswell because he says it will look terrible if i dont, and he wants $850 to do the job. he said somthing about it will look different cos the paint is metalic or somthing. is this recomeneded or can i get away with just doing the boot lid?

cheers
john

I would of thought they would of been blending the colour throughout the surrounding panels otherwise it would stand out like dogs balls on a canary.

surly i dont have to respray the entire rear of the car just so i can go spoiler-less?

My son put a Monaro bonnet on his VX SS and they sprayed the tops of the guards to blend it in. The painter told us the angles the metallic content of the paint falls at could be different to the paint on the adjacent panels and this could effect the colour match, so that is why they blended his bonnet and guards, it all came up good, nice job. They did not paint the whole guard only partially into it, ie 'Blended'.

Ye to do it right yes they should blend into the rear quarters so when you look at the car from the rear you cant notice the colour difference. I would definitely blend the quarters. Do it cheap or do it right.

Mate you can get it painted right without blending. Blending will show up later in the cars life. I just had the front half of my Monaro striped back and sprayed without blending and it is a metallic. The only difference in the new paint to the old is the lack of swirl marks and scratches.

I would be shopping around and find somebody to paint just the bootlid and for them to guarantee a match in colour as I did.

I just had my rear bar sprayed in Silver and you cant pick the difference..... but if it was my weekend car i would blend for sure......

Re price - i had my old car (VX calais) sprayed

bonnet
both side guards
both mirrors
and remove and replace 1 guard

for $1000.

You could probably do better on price

yeh i think ill have a look around. it shouldnt be that hard to match the colour surly. not overly interested in spending that much cash to delete the spoiler. also my rear bar needs a respray too, is this a straight forward job or does it need a lot or work?

I agree that silver is extremely hard to match. Silver is not always well painted from new.

I had the bonnet, both front guards and front bar sprayed plus repair of one front guard for $700.00 with no blending required.

Mate,,,that tiger is a price to match,,you have to blend the tops of the 1/4 panels,, the colour tiger paint gets blended,, but you have to clear the whole 3 panels.

I was looking to do this for my VT a while back and was quoted $750 to respray the boot lid (no spoiler)and blend the guards. I was doing it due to some (bastards) trolley damage though. Ended up just getting the existing boot lid and spoiler (mounts were cracked from the impact) repaired, resprayed underside of spoiler and re-cleared the lot for $500, looks awesome and they deleted the badge aswell.

bear in mind too you'll need to fit the third brake light from an exec/spoiler-less model (on the parcel shelf) for it to be legal. this is another thing that put me off.

I was in the trade for 8 years before leaving. There's a bit more to it than simply slapping some colour on a panel.

Tiger is a mica colour which is a group 3 colour which is the most expensive. You also have labour to add on and clear coat which isnt cheap. then there is hardener for the clear, primer for your bootlid, calculate a rough figure re spray booth time. Take into account drying lights to dry the paint after spraying (these suck power like nothing else) and the bloke still has to make a small profit on the job. 85% of the figures quoted to you will be absorbed into the labour and materials. You need the clear as it is a clear over base colour. Your base colour (gold) goes on in a matt finish and the clear coat is what makes it glossy and reflective.

There are some metallic colours that you can get away with an edge to edge finish. Phantom (black) for example. Tiger mica isn't one of those colours.

The one thing I found with painting is that you can do it cheap and nasty and then redo it a couple of years later when it all goes pear shaped or you can do it properly the first time and with two pack paints these days if it is done properly the paint will last longer than we will.

My advice would be to get the colour blended and done properly. It may cost a bit more but the end result will be worth it and will hold up for years. Hope this helps dude.
