IIRC the 179 was EH vintage, the hp was slightly better than stock, and its worth nuthin unless you find an EH nut looking for a period correct donk.

I "think" they had a steel crank.

The HD had a 179 in them as well. As far as motors go - they are nothing special & I would suggest you get whatever you can for it.

Yeah 179HP started off in EH. I had one in mine bored out to 192. HP was supposed to stand for "high performance". I ended up getting rid of mine and putting a 202 in. As said they were nothing special but way better than the old 149 grey motor.

If memory serves me correctly...149's were red not grey.....

I remember taking a 179hp out of a wrecked HD and sticking it into an EJ sedan way back when.....
It was no high performer in stock form, but once we added a set of triple SU's,a waggott cam, extractors and a remapped dizzy....
The old girl got along well enough to make us really popular with the local coppers at the time......Ahh....the memories:driving:

i'm pretty sure that putting a 149 high compression head on a 179 or 186 was a common mod way back when

Also pretty sure the 179HP block was in the S4 EH and it did have the steel crank as previously mentioned

and lets not forget starfire rods either - probably the only useful thing out of a starfire engine :)

The 132.5ci /2160cc. Grey In-Line Six
Known as the Grey Motor with 61hp/45kW The engine was in production for around eight years. When the FE Holden was made available in 1956 the power was increased to 72hp/53kW by increasing the compression ratio to 6.8 to 1 & fitting larger valves. In 1958 again the engine picked up a few more HP altering the cam and increasing the compression ratio to 7.0 to 1.

HOLDEN 132.5 engine specs

Overhead Valve in line 6 Cylinder Engine
4 Main Bearings
Bore : 3.000 inch /76.20 mm
Stroke : 3.125 inch /79.375 mm
Engine displacement : 132.5 cu in/ 2160cc
Brake horsepower : 60 @ 4200 r.p.m.

BRIEF HISTORY HOLDEN 138cu /2262cc) Straight Six
The new Holden engine was available in 1960 for the Holden FB. With a revised 7.25 to 1 compression ratio the bigger cubed engine now had 76hp/56kw.The new FB Holden was much heavier than the 4 previous model Holdens so performance was not noticed . it is believed that Holden produced over 1 million grey motors .

ENGINE SPECS HOLDEN 138 GRAY ENGINE
Overhead Valve in line 6 Cylinder Engine

Yes, a 149 is a red not a grey. Late EJ's could get them. Available all through EH and HD.

re: the 179, its the 'big' engine option to the 149 available in the same models mentioned above.

What's your 179 out of? Look at the prefix on the engine number EH: M, HD: 179F or 179X (the latter being the top donk available).

What's it worth - not much I assume but I dont follow those things. Most early Holden owners / restorers understand what I'm about to say about the HP 'performance' myth so its worth comes down to someone wanting it for a period resto.

The HP myth is right up there with most police pack legends, maybe worse :) There is absolutely nothing special about the HP 179 block.

Any EH fitted with a 179 until Oct-64 had a block with HP cast on it.

Thereafter the casting says 179 in the position where anyone who knows these engines would find the capacity.

Some HP blocks may also have been used for replacement engines (ie under warranty) after the time the capacity was cast, but not to take them outside the date/model ranges above and again, nothing special.

Why HP then? A red 149 had no casting saying how big the engine was. The larger engine (the 179) had HP cast on it. I think some people will accept that HP stands for 'high performance', but only because it was in comparison to the basic engine (149) of the day. To my knowledge Holden never said intended it to be thought of that way. Probably the "high performance" myth is due in part to them being favoured when people started to work/rebuild red sixes as they had thicker walls than a 186.

Yes, they had a steel cranks, as did every other red at that time.

I have a EH parked in my shed with the HP engine in it, and I have reseched about the engine and as the reply's here say they are nothing special, just the early castings.
Mines got a yella terra head, cam, extractors and bigger exhaust, and I have a double barrel Holley and manifold I will put on it one day. the car is in very origanal stock condition otherwise its a bit of a sleeper. even has factory radio that works. but sh*t don't ya hate those am stations.

If you are looking at selling the motor scottsvess I my be interested in buying it if it as a spare.
