View Full Version : HSV Body Kits - total cost involved?

Looking at putting a HSV body kit on my VX and it seems I can get one fairly easily on the net for about $2k. This however does not come painted and I am unsure of the cost involved to complete the job from painting to installation.
If someone could let me know what the total cost was when they did it, and if they recommend anyone in Sydney to do the job (kit purchase and paint), it would be much appreciated.
Thanks!!

that was aftermarket fibreglass, i HIGHLY advise against it, as much as i loved the look from afar, i could not cope with the stress fractures and cracks every 2 days, if u nail it on a gutter or speed bump it could easly get written off.
if you breath to heavily on it it will crack, if you look at it funny it will crack, if you send it an sms and use the word "lol" it will crack
.... you see where im getting im pretty sure :-)
if you really wanna do it, go genuine

Mate you may be better off trying to source the actual HSV body parts, ie genuine VX HSV front and rear bumpers, and skirts piece by piece and getting them sparyed up. It might be a bit of messing around and may even cost a little more, but trust me it will be worth it as long as the jobs done properly. Far too many people do it on the cheap and it looks shit. The money you will spend repairing it could have gone to buying the proper stuff in the first place.
Not sure of the prices but I got a quote to spray a brand new vented VX bonnet for $600. Seemed a little steep to me, but I have yet to shop around. Good luck.:feedtroll:

I have checked out a few links, and it looks like they are all fibreglass components. Thanks for the advice on this as cracking was something I hadn't thought about. Will look around for genuine......anyone got a helpful link to genuine HSV body kits?
Thanks!

I don't think 'mock ups' are bad if done tastefully. A 6cyl stocker executive with a full blown kit is silly.
To the OP, IMHO just do whatever YOU like the look of and don't worry what others think. You have to drive it, not them. I couldn't care less if 1000 people said my car looked sh!t as long as I was happy with it in the end. ;)
Heed the warning and stay right away from any fibreglass crap. I wish I had been given your advise a year ago as I am now hunting genuine skirts to replace my cracked and wavey fibreglass crappers.

Here here, you want a clubby, buy a clubby, you have an ss, leave the ss skirting on.

VY Clubbys have a rotten front end IMHO hence the reason I bought an SS. If I could have bought a black Senator in a manual with red leather I would have but couldn't find one or afford one so I customized it to how I like it.

Jeez, what happened to you guys?
What on earth is wrong with wanting to put a body kit on a car? I've had the car for 6 years and decided that to keep it longer I want to do a few things to improve the look of it. The VX clubsport looks hot, and for the current value of my car, I can put a body kit on it for far less than buying the same model HSV, plus keep me happy with my car and make it feel new again.
Next you'll be telling me putting different wheels on it is no good. God, what if I suggested I want to put some HSV ones on there.....GASP!!!
What if I want to put a Monaro bonnet on it too......That's not an SS original!!!! DOUBLE GASP!!!
Get over yourselves.
Thanks for the post about part numbers being required for HSV stuff. Didn't know that. And I think I will definitely stay away from fibreglass kits. So it may be too hard to get a good kit anyway, so the originals may just get a touch up instead. Which means that some randoms on the internet will not be "avid haters" of me.

making something its not isn't customizing. If he wants to customize it, get a custom kit, or a c2r kit or something.
Putting a hsv kit on a holden isn't customizing IMO
Buy a HSV instead.

Get over yourselves ffs. Anyone would think that because you own a HSV you're some sort of god. Fcuk I would take my HOLDEN over any HSV from VT-VY. The HSV kit looks good simple as that. Why pay a bucket load of extra money just so you can have a HSV build plate, plus the fact the HSVs depreciate to nothing in a couple of years. People would bag him if he got a C2R or custom kit anyways. At least this way it still looks good...

Nothing wrong with it mate :) I sourced my entire kit for $2,000 (genuine parts) unpainted, including rear LED lights.. and even if it's a 6cyl I'm not gonna badge it as something it's not so I've stayed true with the badges.
If done tastefully it can be really nice.

HSV buyers just usually get their panties in a bunch about it. If you can do it, why not?
If you want to save money try not to purchase the kit complete, shop around and buy things from here and there that are insurance pull-off's (that can be fixed for a small fee when painted) or surplus parts, keep an eye on eBay and don't be afraid to make a whole heap of calls and you'll get what you need for even cheaper than $2k!!
Looking forward to seeing the result mate!!

If you're serious though, post up a WTB thread on here and any other car forums you're a member of, set out a list and let people know you're not afraid to buy damaged parts, I got at least 5 calls and 7 PM's in one week, all for VE parts which are apparently impossible to find!

Should have put more thought into my earlier reply. Should have said stay away from from the fibreglass stuff, but IMO either you got a HSV or you dont. No point trying to be something your not (so to speak). If you wanna customise your car. Do exactly that, Customise it, not copy.
A HSV copy never looks as good as a car that is a proper custom.:eyes:

a hsv is a holden with some different parts thrown on it.
doesn't bother me what ppl do, i'm not the hsv police. easy to pick the fibreglass ones, and the half converted ones. some you can't tell until you look for the plate.
so many hsv's around and fake ones so not really customizing. to customize it needs to be different to the majority. monaro bonnets are on every 2nd car these days even early model commodores so they are off the list now
spose it can be a mix match of parts you /like want from various models.

if u wanna do it then do it. just do it right. dont leave holden vx headlights on put hsv headlights on they look so much better i think. and dont leave the black bumper strip down the side of the doors.

Ok - With both eyes open I can see how some people would take the anti-tranny comments as arrogant. The bottom line is it's your car and you are free to do with it as you want.
As a HSV owner I am offended by mock up's trying to look like the real thing. My biggest concern is that the general public often mistake a tranny for a real HSV (this is after all the whole purpose of a copy). This makes my blood boil. I've had people looking at immitations say that "HSV body kits just don't look right". I've had to point out that it wasn't an original but a copy. A similar situation when a 6cyl ecotec with HSV kit took off from the lights with WOT. Comments were that "HSV's sound like $hit and go like a Camry". Again I'm having to defend the brand and expalin that it was a v6 with a copy body kit.
Without a knowing person there to set the record straight a lot of people do get the wrong idea about what is otherwise a great brand and Aussie icon.
You need to know that every person you fool, every tranny on the road is a blight on the HSV reputation.
Don't confuse personalising a car with turning it into something it's not. Aftermarket wheels, exhaust, ride height, etc can make a car look hot. Some of the best looking Commodores I have seen are not HSV's. But then they aren't trying to look like a HSV.

Well well, another useless post from our old friend jarhead
What are you, the defender of HSV's honour?
At the end of the day, if the car is yours, do whatever you like to it
I did a conversion to my old VE - to the best of my knowledge, I was the first person to complete the rear end properly (happy to be corrected here)
I did mine to learn new things, and have the lines of the car I wanted
At no time did i try to say it was a HSV, hell i called it the Omega Special Vehicle as a pisstake
I respect the hell out of HSVs, but when I bought a brand new VE at 17, I couldn't get a HSV, but my dad's VE senator gave me inspiration.
Who cares if the misinformed people make an incorrect deduction - they will not be the sort of people who are enthusiasts, and certainly will not be in the target market for HSV sales
Also, most people will actually test drive a car before buying it, therefore quashing any ideas of HSV's going like a camry.
So get off your high horse jarhead - you will say everyone will laugh at you behind your back etc etc - but just remember how most replies were directed towards you in my old thread - a definite pattern emerged with the attitudes towards your manner
bjs05l - I would say do your homework, get lots of quotes and speak to your local panel beater of choice before going ahead with it, as these talks may decide whether it is viable for you with a certain budget and/or timeframe
Good luck with the venture whether it is a goer or not

Interesting comments from some people. Didn't realise some HSV owners were so sensitive about the topic. You know my point of view already, and I wont change theirs by posting more of what I think. I will have the look of the HSV cars I admire, for less money, and exceed their stock performance which is peace of mind enough for me.
Anyway, staying on topic. Does anyone have a link that may help? Surely someone has sourced a genuine kit direct from somewhere specific? I saw a kit of a GTS Monaro for $9,300 unpainted on one site (SSV I think....). Hope they all aren't that pricey, definitely not worth it at those $'s. At this stage it looks like I will be keeping an eye out for seconds on ebay etc and building the kit over time as some have recommended.
Thanks for the PM AJS.
Oh yeah, what is this rubber thing on the doors people are talking about??

Agreed. Rims will be part of the upgrade, though not HSV stockers. Will get something nice and shiny.

Glad you're doing the rims also. I'd be doing the boot garnish as well. It's part of what makes the back of the VX look so good.
There's only a very small minority of people that do this right which is why I reckon you're coping so much flak. I'm an HSV owner and don't really care if people want to make mock ups. The problem is most people don't go the whole way. eg. They don't two tone the bumpers, they use silver mesh inserts, Executive headlights, stock holden rims, don't put in the driving lights and so on. And some kits just don't fit properly. This isn't customising, it's vandalising! If I have to look twice to figure out if it's an HSV, then I like it. Otherwise it's just like buying fake Oakleys from the petrol station. Look good from far but they're eventually going to hurt your eyes.
Good luck with sourcing all the parts. Just do it properly. Otherwise you won't really have the HSV look you're after.

The only HSV copies that shit me are the ones that are done so badly that they look ridiculous ... I'd rather they tried to copy something else.
Imitations like Roonstain's OSV / Red's Calator-Senais ... ... look great. Do it right and it'll be worth the effort. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery ...
:goodjob:
VX HSV is one of the best ... VXII R8 was my first HSV ... good luck.

There it is. While i am not a fan of mockups / fakes / imitations. than can look good IF they are done properly using good quality pieces and not cheap fibreglass crap.
Cars like Red's and the OSV can and do look good.
Back in the old days how many mock up xw-xb GT's and HK - HZ GTS's not to mention Brock commodores did we used to see on the roads.
Let the man do his thing to his ride, he never said he was building a mock up just that he wanted to improve the look of his car

Indeed!!
BTW to the guy who started this post, if you do decide to get a full kit from somewhere thats not original, be prepared for it to need a fair bit of fabricating to fit nice. Just from my experience.

You can do what you like with your car but at least do what Rob has done and not badge it as an HSV.
I've never quite understood mods like this. I would much rather spend the money on some nice wheels or a cam etc. But meh, it's your car.

Is it just me or are there a lot of bitter people on here?
Yeah yeah fellas, you're all fantastic because you own a HSV. I do not, I am not worthy! Let's not forget, however, that my V6 is worth considerably more than a lot of you nay sayers cars, that wouldn't put a bee in your bonnet would it? You're above that, aren't you?
HSV's are Holden's with a bodykit. Now let's say we follow some of your logic and assume that any car with a bodykit is just crap, isn't that what you HSV owners drive?
Hmmmmmmmmmm, take off the blindfolds guys!
Correct mate, and as far as I know I'm the second person to complete the rear end conversion.
As far as I see it, as long as it doesn't see any HSV badges then it's in the clear for custom status and it's not a "wannabe" vehicle! There are a lot of people that would love to have an HSV but for one reason or another can't have one, so good on them for trying to reach out for what they want!
Hey dude,
If this logic makes sense to you then a all I can say is "keep on reaching".
Let me let you in on a little secret - that little voice you hear when people point and stare, belongs to Sylvester Junior. "Oh, the shame!"

The rubber things are about half way down the door, and are black/grey in colour - they dont look right on kitted cars, a dead give away

Roonstain is right, you really are a tool. Your petty insults don't even warrant a response.
However, please don't be bitter because you bought an HSV believing that people would grovel before you and bow at your feet, worshipping you because you're so ultimately superior and part of an exclusive club which nobody can join. Except you, big spender! I wish I was worthy enough to own an HSV like you!!
Get your head out of your arse mate, really. You're embarrassing yourself.

i thought the only difference was the longer wheelbase, guess i was wrong.
Front quater, bumper, even rear bumper are different sizes?

No, all the WM grange parts are a straight fit to the WM statesman. The statesman is the donor car for the Grange, so it'll all bolt on.

damn! I was hoping i could get a statesman shell converted into a Clubby type front and fender. even with a bit of cutting and fitting i don't mind.
Guess that's a fail.... :(

There'd be a lot of custom fab involved and it wouldn't look the same, but it's doable. Anything is doable with the money :p

Hey mate, I've noticed the VX bumper is pick up only in Melbourne, but if you end up buying them this week I can transport them from the pick up destination to whatever postage/courier you organise (I'm driving a wagon at the moment but only for this week), let me know how she goes :)
